25.01.2022 Joyce Carr, a much loved volunteer at the carriage who has since relocated, knitted some lovely poppies for our courageous soldiers. Thank you,Joyce
24.01.2022 Some beautiful blossom at the Memorial Park. Today, 15th Oct 2017, marks 99 yrs since the Memorial trees were planted. Two days ago, on the 13th Oct 2017, was exactly 100yrs since John McDougall (20 yrs) and George Peddle (25yrs) were killed in France during WW1. RIP.
24.01.2022 A set of keys were found at the Legerwood Memorial Trees yesterday, 11th Feb 2018. Please leave a message re their description and contact details for their safe return.
23.01.2022 On the 15th October, 1918 (100 years ago), local residents gathered for a tree planting ceremony in Legerwood. Each family who had lost a loved one in WW1, planted a tree in their memory. Alan Andrews (a Douglas Fir)....Thomas Edwards (a giant Sequoia)....William Hyde (a Deodar)....Robert Jenkins (a giant sequoia)....John McDougall (a Deodar)....George Peddle (a Douglas Fir)....John Risely (a Deodar). We remember...and we thank you.
22.01.2022 My original post stated that the fire was in October, 1967. That was incorrect. It was Sunday night, 10th September.1967. I was standing on the hall verandah (which was opposite the hotel), watching it burn. Very unfortunate.
21.01.2022 Beautiful blossoms looking amazing on Armistice Day,2018, in the Memorial Park
20.01.2022 Here are a few words from a few of the many happy tourists who come to see the chainsaw carvings of our Memorial trees. One of the comments was from Bob Clark, the last station master at the Legerwood Railway Station. Hope you enjoyed your visit, Bob. A few people thought Ray Ralph was the last station master but he wasn't. Bobby was transferred to the Parattah station in the late 1970's and Steven Seward and Barry Cruise continued to relieve at Legerwood. They did seasonal work, milk powder, superphosphate and other freights until 1985 when the station became unattended. The station was later sold and moved to another location.Thank you to Sarah Hirst from Tasrail for researching my query.
18.01.2022 Here are a few photos showing the free camping area behind the carriage at the Legerwood Memorial trees. Since it is a small area it is more for an overnight stay. The well-lit toilet area is very handy. There is also a free sheltered b'cue and a playground close by for the children. There is also RV camping at Ringarooma, 6 kms from the trees.
17.01.2022 Some eager beavers lining up for a sweet treat on Sunday when the van visited the park offering soft serves and donuts. The wonders of Facebook. Another reason to get out of your house, enjoy the sunshine and visit the lovely park with its playground and barbecue areas.
16.01.2022 Congratulations to our local boy, Peter France, on publishing his book,"Four Years of My Life.". It covers the period,1965 to 1969. He was in the first intake of National Service and was selected to be in the Special Air Service. He went to Vietnam and was in the regular army for 3 years before being discharged to go and work on the farm which he purchased from his aging father. It should make very interesting reading! Well done, Peter.Peter's phone number is: 03) 63531035.
16.01.2022 Today, 10th April 2018, is a momentous occasion for the Memorial tree carvings. Because of the deterioration of some of the carvings, 3 of the carvings had to be replaced. A person new to chainsaw carving was commissioned to do this very important job. Here are some photos of them being replaced. Steve Morris from Mobile Milling Tasmania, along with his assistant, installed the carvings and are also commissioned to do the annual maintenance of the trees.
16.01.2022 Here are some photos of the NE Rail Trail from Legerwood to Scottsdale. It was intended to go to the Memorial trees but because of objections by a few people it hasn't happened. Hopefully it will....soon.
15.01.2022 Here's a pic of the front of the Legerwood Hotel after it was destroyed by fire on the 10th September, 1967. These amazing photos of the hotel (plus others of Legerwood) are courtesy of the Diprose family (and other families). We are eternally grateful for Tom's efforts in recording our history.Remember....today is history...tomorrow :)
15.01.2022 This is how the trees looked before they were to be carved. The first tree to be carved, the Anzac Tree, (near the phone box) was completed in December, 2004.
15.01.2022 Congratulations and best wishes in your new venture!
12.01.2022 A great time was had by all at the Local "n" Live event held in the park today. Here are some pics of the dancing, face painting, Drummers, laser tag, Parks and Wildlife, food vans and Jamie Davis and his band providing the music. Thank you to the local council for hosting the event. Also a big thank you to the Swimming Pool committee for providing chips and donuts as well as the Park Committee for cooking the hamburgers and sausages. A very big thank you to the people who came along and supported the event. A final thank you to the weather man who provided a balmy night for us all.
12.01.2022 Jason Chard from Scottsdale was assigned the task of replacing the 3 chainsaw carvings done be Eddie Freeman 13 years ago. Unfortunately the original carvings deteriorated to such an extent that they had to be replaced. Jason has his own business, "Tasmanian Burl."
10.01.2022 Here is a pic to help refresh our memories of the Legerwood Hotel which was destroyed by fire on Sunday 10th September,1967. It was never rebuilt.
10.01.2022 Here's a photo of the last of the beautiful daffodil display in the Memorial park. We welcome tourists to our beautiful state. Enjoy.
10.01.2022 Here is a wonderful collage created by Margaret Carrington. Thanks for sharing it, Margaret!
09.01.2022 This chainsaw carving by Eddie Freeman can be seen at the George St entrance to Anzac Park in Scottsdale. It is to show our deep gratitude for the "Fuzzy Wuzzy" angels who gave tireless assistance, through all weathers and heavy combat, to carry the injured along the very difficult terrain of the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea during the Japanese invasion in WW2. Here an angel is helping a wounded Australian soldier. Without their help we may not have been successful in preventing the Japanese from taking over Port Moresby. If this had happened they would have had easy access to our Australian shores.
08.01.2022 Since there is a photo on this site of the Ringarooma Area School taken a long time ago, I thought I'd show a few more recent photos taken in Oct 2017. Major changes have been made since I went to school there :)
07.01.2022 Congratulations and best wishes on the grand opening of the Legerwood Kitchen!
07.01.2022 Happy birthday and Valentine's Day to Jen, one of our very valuable volunteers at the carriage!
06.01.2022 We received a lovely surprise in the mail from Shirley Baldwin. Shirley and her husband had visited the Memorial trees during their recent 6 week tour of Tassie. Shirley was so touched by the memorial that she crocheted some beautiful poppies for each plaque for Anzac Day. Thank you, Shirley. The committee appreciated your beautiful gift.
06.01.2022 Here is a photo of just one of the 10 poppies that Shirley Baldwin crocheted for the Memorial Trees for Anzac Day, 2018. Thank you, Shirely. We love them.
03.01.2022 The Ulysses club is a social club for motorcyclists over 40 years of age. There are about 137 branches throughout Australia. They usually hold their AGM over a week involving many activities. This year it is held in Launceston. It was great to see some of them visit our trees during their stay. We hope they have a wonderful stay in Tassie!
03.01.2022 It was wonderful to have a visit from an AAT King bus today. We hope they enjoyed their visit and have a memorable time during the rest of their stay in Tassie!!
02.01.2022 Here is another photo, courtesy of the Diprose family, of the opening of the Legerwood milk factory in 1973. When a new site was built at Spreyton in 1997, the Legerwood and Devonport operations were closed soon after.
02.01.2022 It's great to see so many tourists enjoying our beautiful state even though the weather has been a little unkind. Here is a photo from when the carvings were started in August 2004. The first tree to be carved was the Anzac tree.
02.01.2022 The Lone Pine tree has grown quite a lot since it was planted on the 11th November, 2007 by Cindy Walsh (sec Mem Park). The plaque was donated by the Launceston Regiment of the 12th Battalion Comrades.
01.01.2022 Some members of Compass Expedition who are living the dream and are doing a 5 day motorcycle tour of Tassie and then another 5 days to Sydney, called in to see the Memorial Tree Carvings today. You can check out their website to see what wonderful adventures they go on! Have a wonderful stay in Tassie and enjoy. We hope the weather is kind to you.
01.01.2022 Gordon, driver of the AAT Kings bus, requested to meet the maker of the Anzac biscuits which his passengers (and Gordon) all love to sample when they visit the Memorial Tree Carvings. Here are a few photos of the day when Helen (Nell) Walsh met some of her many admirers of her famous Anzac biscuits. Nell (86), a long time resident of Legerwood, now resides in a retirement village in Scottsdale. For the last 3 years she has made dozens of biscuits every week during the tourist season for the carriage. Thank you for your generosity, Nell. I'm sure she enjoyed being fussed over for the day!
01.01.2022 Here are some of the cars in Targa Tasmania going past the Memorial Trees today. Targa Tas is a tarmac rally that travels over 2000kms with over 40 competitive stages on closed roads. 2016 is the 25th consecutive year that it has been running and this year it has over 300 entries. It is running from the 11th to the 16th April.
01.01.2022 Here is a photo of our new plaques which were kindly donated by Max Robbie from Metal Sign & Label, Rochedale South in Queensland. Max was so impressed with our memorial that he made this generous offer. Thank you, Max. Each plaque gives details about the soldier. Also there will be much activity in the park today from 4 to 9 pm tonight with a drumming workshop, face painting and belly dancing. Jamie Davis will be there to entertain everyone and there will be a competition for the Best Dressed Cowboy and Cowgirl as well as the Best and Worst Country Hat. Drinks as well as hamburgers from the local butchery will also be on sale....and the sun is shining...see you there!!
