25.01.2022 Re-sharing this old post from a few years back. Still very relevant today and especially at this time of year.

24.01.2022 Australian Kestrels. In this short video Needles attempts a ‘food pass’ with Paris. This is not successful in this particular instance as she is simply not hungry Look at the wing coz the beak don’t want to know. In general we are trying to ensure that all Paris’s meals are provided to her by her mate to strengthen their bond. Both birds, although young (less than 1 year old) are beginning to exhibit some breeding behaviour and have paired up really well. We are hopeful that they may start breeding in the next year or two as they mature.

17.01.2022 Jedda the kestrel in slow motion. The footage is a bit back-lit but the wind direction dictated our position. I've slowed this to 28% Watch her manouverability in the air. Pumping her wings to hold her position and her long tail extended for fine control. The Australian Kestrel is the master of hovering flight.

15.01.2022 A nice memory of when we presented our ‘hunters of the skies’ program at sovereign hill in September 2017. It was very popular and well attended. We hope those days come again! This clip also features sovereign hill’s resident band, the talented ‘Men O’ the Hill’ who really add atmosphere to the place! On this particular day the line up was Matiss (button accordion and fiddle), Graham (double bass), Noel (guitar) and guest artist Ian on percussion. Looking forward to a busier 2021.

15.01.2022 If you'd like to see Martin deliver a 'virtual' raptor display with three of our birds (Pickle, Jedda and Alkina) head on over to the Melton City Council Learning Directory for their Lifelong Learning Festival. Starts tomorrow. https://meltonlearning.com.au//lifelong-learning-festival/

15.01.2022 Some excerpts from our display for the Pentland Hills Landcare group yesterday at Myrniong. This was our first and last public outdoor display for a community group for 2020! May 2021 be a better year

14.01.2022 This is a really worthwhile cause - more than ever wildlife needs habitat and the money raised will be used for ground work on reserves by Bush Heritage Australia. Talia has set her goal at a very achievable level but needs your help to get there. Please support!

13.01.2022 Please help Talia in her charitable endeavour to support our native fauna!

12.01.2022 Our Australian (Nankeen) Kestrel breeding program has taken a step forward. Paris and Needles, at the tender age of one year, have four eggs! It’s interesting how two are pale and blotchy and two are more of a brown colour. Video footage was via endoscopy of the box from outside the enclosure. This is their first attempt at breeding so should really be considered a practice run. However we are keeping our fingers crossed . So far they are model parents and sharing the incubation duties. Hatching, if it occurs, is due in mid November. Watch this space!

08.01.2022 Quil the Wedge-tailed Eagle assisting with aviary cleaning today.

07.01.2022 Our Australian Kestrel breeding program has caught us quite by surprise. We are excited to announce that, at the tender age of one year old, Paris and Needles have hatched all four of their eggs. The age of the chicks at time of writing ranges from 3 to 7 days. (the nestling/growth period lasts around 31-35 days) There are still no guaruntees of course, but they are proving to be exceptionally good parents so far! Watch in this video how both adults share the feeding duties. We'd like to thank and acknowledge our breeding advisors Molly Watchorn and Linda van Durren for their advice and support.

06.01.2022 Australian Kestrels Food Exchange Video 2. This time a much more successful food pass. The flurry of snow seems to have sharpened Paris’s appetite.

03.01.2022 Welcome to spring at the Leigh Valley Hawk and Owl Sanctuary. An unseasonal flurry of snow had Martin scurrying about today, checking birds and trying to knock snow off the roof of any enclosure with fine mesh (to stop it stretching the mesh). Snow is really unusual here. Although beautiful and a huge novelty, it created some new challenges! Skeksi the Barking Owl was not impressed!

02.01.2022 Great shots by Carol Ann. It was nice to do an actual display in front of an audience.
