20.01.2022 Embodied healing begins with the development of interoception. Interoception is considered the 8th sense and it’s our ability to go inside and read our bodily s...tates. To heal at the body level and to fully inhabit ourselves requires the development of this sense. Here is a little exercise taken and adapted from the Somatic Pyschotherapy toolbox by Manuela Mischa reeds that helps clients in the beginning stages of development of this sense. Further along in therapy we then develop the ability to read the nuanced states of our nervous system. These skills of tracking and reading oneself not only help in the resolution of trauma at the body level, but also increase the development of one’s intuitive senses and invite the capacity to experience deep presence. 19.01.2022 Hello How are you? I am taking a wee break ... I am tired! I had underestimated the support and care my children needed during this time. I am very grateful for my deep learnings, continued support and healing of my own nervous system. My capacity has grown, which has opened space for me to hold my kids in their experience of tough and sometimes overwhelming emotions as they navigate their way through the unfamiliar. I feel so blessed to be there for them. My body is asking me to rest.... and I’m listening. I’m going to take a break from my Thursday night class for a couple of weeks and move a little slower through my weeks. As school settles back in and I get my breath back i'll be ready to play again. I invite you to continue to play and explore. Offer yourself time to pause, to notice, to do less. I give heartfelt thanks to those who have joined over the past few weeks. Give yourself some time prior to class to come in to your space and settle. prepare a space for yourself that is comfortable and cosy. Ideally, your space allows little interruptions and a place you can feel at ease. 05.01.2022 Hello! How has your week been? For me, we are in to week two of kids learning at home and I’m feeling a little tired.... The kids are missing their connections with friends and teachers. We are playing a lot! Lots of wrestling, obstacles, cards, and whatever gets made up in the moment, but playing with me is not the same as playing with people their own age. I’m a little played out, kids are a little Mumed out! The Somatic Movement classes are following what my body feels like it needs, with the intention that it’s also what you may need. The classes are slow. Time is spent settling, noticing areas that maybe lifting away from settling, or areas that maybe drawing us inwards. Exploring, noticing, settling, being. From this place of more settle we play with moving. The last few weeks we have explored pouring the contents of our bodies to initiate movement. This week we will continue to pour with more awareness of our heart space. There is no charge for the classes at the moment. Everyone is welcome. Class is on every Thursday at 6:30pm Queensland time. 03.01.2022 THE ROOT OF IMMORALITY IN OUR SOCIETY - THE GRAFFITI IS ON THE WALL. Wow! So much going on in the world right now! ... - the telling and maintenance of untruths; - the breaking of rules; - vandalism of property; - "isms of all description - racism, ageism, sexism, hedonism... ; - pollution on a global and atmospheric scale and, in honour of George Floyd actual disregard for life. How on earth have so many got to such a place? How on earth has our species descended so low? Let’s get back to basics by looking first at a somatic and then a Taoist perspective. Most, if not all, of the behaviours listed above can be understood as expression of a continuum of one primary emotion that of anger. And I say a continuum because anger doesn’t suddenly happen. It builds! Even if we are unconscious to that fact, or it happens so rapidly that we are humanly unable to track its escalation. For most the continuum goes something like this: - mild dissatisfaction - to irritation - to frustration - to annoyance - to anger - to rage And in some cases, it escalates even further to the red mist experience of existential rage. (N.B. Existential rage refers to a feeling that is a more primitive expression involving the unconscious brainstem. This differs to the other shades of anger that relate to either the limbic or cortical levels of the brain and thus tend to be more conscious). What is Mother Nature’s intention with anger? Well, the anger continuum is Mother Nature's way of notifying of an unmet need informed with the level of urgency that need should be met. It’s intended to be a wakeup call on all levels. It is intended to wake up: - the neurophysiology it belongs to; and - the neurophysiology of those around I.E. one of its main intentions is to attract assistance. YES! ANGER IS MEANT TO BEGET CONNECTION! And this is SO misunderstood in our society. Instead, society demonises and chastises anger, and has for generations. And, the less a generation is able to be with and experience their own anger, the less their neurophysiology is able to develop its skillset and tools to work with that anger energy. Those individuals are then less able to attune to, be with and co-regulate the anger of their young children. These young children are then as good as abandoned with a body experience that feels too powerful and intolerable to bear. This in turn causes the young child’s neurophysiology to opt for dissociation in an attempt to recover a sense of safety, i.e. these young children are effectively forced to abandon themselves. And Hey Presto! The next generation of anger disembodied, dissociated people is created another generation is neuronally wired with repressed anger, (where repressed means unconsciously pushed out of awareness). In a nutshell, disembodied people can only parent in a dissociated way and will only rear disembodied, dissociated people. If nothing changes; if people aren’t taught how to embody their anger energy, a self-perpetuating, reducing societal situation ensues: - unconscious/disembodied acting out of anger leading to - more violence in society leading to - a reduced societal tolerance of anger leading to - societal demonisation of anger leading to - anger being forced further into the unconscious leading to - lack of ways and tools to work productively with anger And so back to the top to repeat all over again. We effectively end up with a society lacking respect for life and doing mindless things. A society that struggles to operate in a moral and ethical manner. Any of this sounding too familiar in current times?! So how can we help ourselves out of such a reducing cycle? Perhaps Taoism can provide some insight. Perhaps you are aware of one of the core concepts of Taoism - the concept of Yin Yang, where Yang correlates to all movement in all directions, no matter how small or weak. Due to this, Yang is also considered to be life giving and life sustaining. Hence, it correlates to our sympathetic nervous system and our life force and.... the anger continuum. This is exactly why repression of anger within runs into all manner of health problems: - internal movement becomes compromised we develop tension in our musculature and our viscera, e.g. neck and shoulder pain, high blood pressure, asthma, constipation - without movement we are unable to feel that is the purpose of the freeze response! E.g. body numbness, disorientation, flat emotions - internal space becomes impossible - our internal environment stagnates and putrefies, e.g. peptic ulcers, cancers and tumors - our life force becomes stifled we become lethargic and listless, e.g. CFS, depression In essence, intolerability of internal Yang is life’s disaster! Without conscious connection to our internal Yang we become numb and unfeeling. And, on a societal level, without the ability to feel, we are no longer able to experience our actions or the effect of our actions on others. We slip into the realms of disrespectful and immoral behaviours. We become able to hurt property, other living things and people, without experiencing a conscience, or regret, or shame, or guilt. And so, we find ourselves living in a society that seems to have lost its moral and ethical compass. It really is time to read the graffiti on the wall of our society. The only way we can begin to reverse what’s going on right now is to help people to recover their nervous system's capacity and tolerance for internal Yang. And this necessitates reconnection to their sense of their feelings. And that can only begin if individuals learn how to become aware of their body and their neurophysiology. We need to be somatically aware. Society desperately needs somatically based approaches more than ever. Let’s spread that graffiti. Write that on your FB wall! Class starts at 6:30pm No Charge - everyone welcome I had a few technical difficulties last week which resulted in a few people not being able to join. I think I have it all sorted out for tomorrow night. There is another class right before ours so I do need to wait to get the OK to open our meeting. I won't be far away. It can be very helpful to take some time to prepare your space. I've popped some ideas below... Space - Although we will not be doing big movements, it may be nice to allow yourself enough space around you to roll from side to side. If you can, have a space that is free from interruptions and a place that you can feel as ease in. Room temperature - cosy and comfy Music - I will play my music, some say you can hear it. Alternatively it may be nice to have some of your own gentle music in the background. Props - blankets, bolsters, pillows, whatever you need to make you feel comfortable Candles or aromatherapy - set up your diffuser or candle to add to your cosy space Anything else that you may find helpful or comfortable.
