09.01.2022 Hi all, This week’s interview on the RSN Country Footy Show is with Moe president Manny Gelagotis. Manny himself had a stellar sports career, playing with Morwe...ll in the National Soccer league in the summer and with Moe in the Latrobe Valley footy comp in the winter. Now he’s the manager of the family horse-training operation. He and his brother Peter Gelagotis have stables at Moe and Caulfield. In country footy, Manny has been the Moe president for the past five years. Last weekend, the Lions consolidated in unfamiliar territory at the top of the ladder in the Gippsland league with a win over traditional powerhouse Traralgon. The best on ground was Moe’s star recruit Bernie Vince yes, the former Adelaide and Melbourne midfielder and one-time enthusiastic celebrator of a country cricket premiership with his mates on the Yorke Peninsula. Have a listen here: https://player.whooshkaa.com/shows/country-footy-show Soon, I am starting a new show on RSN called My First Game. The idea is to have a chat with former VFL/AFL players about their debut match. The show will go to air at godawful times during Kevin Hillier’s new overnight show, but it will also be podcast, so you can listen at any time. I hope to speak to Brent Harvey because he’s the games record holder. I also hope to speak to Max Crow because he made his debut in the match between Essendon and Richmond in May 1974 yes, the match that is infamous for the Windy Hill Brawl. I was at Windy Hill that day. I remember looking at all the hubbub, which was only about 30 metres in front of me, and knowing in my nine-year-old mind that it was a big deal when runners and trainers were involved in the fisticuffs. Gigs has mentioned to me the first game of Chris Grant, which was Round 1, 1990, the first game after the aborted merger between Footscray and Fitzroy. It was quite an emotional day. The next week, Leon Cameron made his debut in Footscray’s match in Sydney, which the Dogs won against the odds, making it an even more emotional day. Has anyone got any other ideas for players who had an interesting debut match? This weekend I am going to the match between Leitchville-Gunbower and Lockington-Bamawm United in the Heathcote District league before hosting the Leitchville centenary celebrations in a tent by the ground on Saturday evening. About 200 have booked for the event. If you’re keen, please email the club at: [email protected]. On late Sunday morning, I’m speaking on panel about sports history at the Clunes Booktown Festival, which should provide an interesting change of pace. If you’re at either event, come and say g’day. Cheers Paul Daffey
