20.01.2022 Very disappointed to attend the Campbelltown City Council (CCC) meeting last night to witness a vote where they chose to continue their hostile takeover bid for the suburbs of Woodforde and Rostrevor(AHC) in my ward. There have now be 2 surveys of affected residents and ratepayers, one conducted by Adelaide Hills Council (AHC) and the other by CCC. Both indicated overwhelming opposition (approximately 2 out of every 3 people), yet CCC chooses to ignore the wishes of this com...munity and continue with their bid. The most disappointing aspect of the decision is that not one of the CCC elected members spoke to oppose or even ask questions about the biased report that had been presented to them by their administration. I was particularly disappointed with the speeches of Cr Britton-La Salle, Cr Leombruno (mover and seconder of the motion) and Mayor Whittaker who misrepresented information about the level of support, facts and history of previous boundary change proposals. Anecdotal evidence on the level of support by residents was given equal weight with the overwhelming opposing survey results. There was much criticism of the Hamilton Hill development in Woodforde yet members failed to mention that this was imposed on AHC by the State Government despite strong opposition from Council. It was stated that rampant urban infill had ceased in CCC, despite almost daily reports in the Facebook Group Love Campbelltown of demolitions and clearance of significant and regulated trees to allow for townhouses and apartments. This is the sort of development that AHC residents in the Rostrevor(AHC) and Woodforde fear will occur in their region as Campbelltown have shown that they are impotent to stop it. They also failed to mention the most obvious underlying motivation for the takeover bid (despite overwhelming opposition) is around $1 million in rate revenue that CCC stands to gain from affected residents and ratepayers. This is obviously needed to top up the coffers of a council that has a projected budget deficit of around 2% next financial year due to ill advised untargetted COVID-19 rate freeze in 2020-21. Fortunately the final decision will be made by the Boundaries Commision which will hopefully put a strong weight on the views of the residents and ratepayers of the region and refuse to allow CCC to take this matter any further. The opinions expressed in this post are my own and are not necessarily the policy or position of the Adelaide Hills Council.

19.01.2022 This article although written for Victoria provides some common errors that people in Adelaide Hills Council make when it comes to recycling. Examples include putting greasy pizza boxes in the yellow recycling bin - they should go in the green waste bin, leaving lids on plastic and glass containers when they go in the yellow recycling bin - they should go in the blue waste bin or be collected together in one plastic container and put in the yellow bin, and putting soft plastics e.g. glad wrap in the yellow recycling bin- they should be collected and taken to RedCycle bins outside Coles and Woolworths stores.

19.01.2022 This #NationalRecyclingWeek, stop by the Coventry Library in Stirling and check out the information on display that will help you Avoid, Reduce, Re-use, Recycle, and Compost - all great ways to keep items out of landfill. https://www.whichbin.sa.gov.au/

18.01.2022 Great news, the Bridgewater CFS Op Shop is reopening!

15.01.2022 Today I wrote to the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Corey Wingard about the length of undergrowth along the Freeway corridor which is the responsibility of the Department to clear. With less than a week to go before the beginning of the fire danger season in the Hills there is still far to much long grass creating a fire hazard. 14.01.2022 The Adelaide Hills are poorly served by public transport options. The State Government needs to get serious and better regulate ride share services here and provide better options such as on-demand and better services. 10.01.2022 Happy Easter! May your heart be filled with peace and joy!

08.01.2022 In breaking news overnight, the European Medicines Agency has released a statement based on its analysis of the AstraZeneca vaccine, and has concluded that unus...ual blood clots with low blood platelets should be listed as a very rare side effect. The EMA reviewed 169 reported cases of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) in Europe, as of April 4, from 34 million administered doses of the vaccine. The risk of developing clots based on that data is 1 in 200,000. The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has reported that of 20 million people given the AstraZeneca vaccine up to March 31, there were 79 cases of blood clot, with 19 deaths reported. The risk of blood clots in this population was 1 in 250,000. As a result of the above findings, the following has been announced: 1. The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation in the UK has recommended that people aged 18 to 29 with no underlying health conditions be offered an alternative COVID-19 vaccine if available. 2. Those who are aged under-30 and have received their first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine should continue to take the second dose. 3. Oxford University has halted its trials of the vaccine on children and teenagers. It is very important to emphasise the following points: While anti-vaxxers may view the above news as justification for their anti-vaccination stance, this actually highlights how seriously regulatory bodies perform surveillance of vaccines. Vaccine confidence relies upon transparency, and the fact that regulatory bodies can revise their stance based on the data is a reassuring sign for everyone who is taking a vaccine, whether for COVID or otherwise. Second, let’s put things into perspective. With the risk of blood clots now acknowledged as a very rare side effect of the vaccine, it’s important to state that the risk of blood clots from taking the oral contraceptive pill is much higher. According to a study published in The Lancet, excluding for other lifestyle factors such as weight and smoking habits, there is a three fold risk of developing blood clots if you take the contraceptive pill. This means around 1 in 1000 women on the pill will develop a blood clot. With over 151 million women worldwide currently on the contraceptive pill, that’s 151,000 women who will potentially develop blood clots. The risk of developing blood clots with AstraZeneca vaccine in a population of 151 million receiving the vaccine is 604-755 people based on the 1 in 200-250,000 figure quoted today. Third, while the UK has recommended that those under the age of 30 receive an alternative vaccine out of an abundance of caution, the risk of dying of COVID in this age group is still higher than the risk of developing a clot secondary to AstraZeneca vaccination. The infection fatality rate in those aged 20-30 lies around 0.01% according to recently published data. For every one million young adults in this age bracket who developed COVID-19, 100 will die. If those same million young adults were vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine, 4-5 will potentially die of clots. While every life is precious, please remember that as per the EMA, the benefit of the vaccine clearly outweighs any potential harm. I appreciate the fact that some people will see these figures differently, and that for some vaccine confidence may be affected. Unfortunately it does take a very large scale vaccination program to see these very rare side effects emerge, and that’s why Phase IV trials and safety surveillance continue to be such invaluable tools in vaccine development. I applaud the efforts of the regulatory body to be as transparent as possible, and I look forward to seeing what recommendations the TGA will make in light of this announcement. - Sara

02.01.2022 The State Government has released the latest draft of the Planning & Development Code (P&D Code) for Metro Adelaide (including the Adelaide Hills Council district) and we are pleased that a new Adelaide Hills Subzone has been created specifically to address the concerns expressed by Council and a petition created by Cr Boyd and I regarding effective inclusion of the Median Rule Land Division Tool in the P&D Code. This is a real victory for people power and I thank all those who have signed and supported our campaign.
