16.01.2022 This weekend has been the beginning of the celebrations of National Gardening Week in Southern Tasmania. The Garden Clubs of the Southern Zone have come together to host a Garden Festival covering Saturday and Sunday. Located at the iconic "Woodbank Garden" at Longley it was great opportunity to visit again the wonderful garden established by Ken Gillanders and see its growth and development. This is a garden which celebrates a lifetime of plant collecting from all over th...e world. Sometimes we all need to remember the giants of plant collecting and Ken is one of those - and has brought a rich history of plants to Tasmania. The gardeners of Southern Tasmania certainly supported the event. With absolutely wonderful spring weather on Saturday, over 600 gardeners turned up, scoured Ken's garden, almost took all the plants for sale away and had a perfectly wonderful time. Sunday, the weather changed and for a short while we thought we were going to be washed out but the storms went around us and the day cleared to a beautiful afternoon. A further 300 gardeners came through the gates. From the perspective of the southern Garden Clubs, our gardening friends want events of this kind and it was a joy to arrange this one. WE WILL BE BACK!!

16.01.2022 A interesting reflection on the importance of soil fertility. We gardeners should know this but sometimes we forget.

12.01.2022 It has been quite a while since I have posted anything on our Facebook page. This is an open invitation for any members of garden clubs or any gardeners to make a contribution. Have you checked out the Facebook pages of the Garden Clubs of Australia?... Worth a regular look.

10.01.2022 I've recently had the opportunity to communicate with Exmouth Community Garden (WA). Check out their Facebook page to see what it is like to garden in semi-arid Australia.

10.01.2022 Haven't posted any pics of the GCA President's visit to southern Tasmania. Just a few in Richmond.

09.01.2022 I visited Martry Cole just over a week ago (when I was still moving about)to ask her to add some colour to our logo. Which on do you like best? First, Second or Third. (privately, I like the idea of using the three of them in different situations)

09.01.2022 We Will Rebuild Gardening After Bushfires IN SUSTAINABLE DESIGN|BY FRANCES SAUNDERS Bushfires are regular event in our fire-prone country. Unfortunately, communities are sometimes devastated and, sadly, these tragic events sometimes lead to significant loss of human life, as well as loss of livestock, livelihoods, remnant bushland, wildlife and property. In true Australian spirit, fire-ravaged communities promise to rebuild, from the ground up. Part of this re-building pr...Continue reading

08.01.2022 Last weekend Lenah Valley Garden Club made a trip to Launceston and Bonnie Bray Nursery and Gardens. Full bus load of Garden Club members had a really great time. The Launceston Horticultural Association's Spring event was particular highlight for me. Pot plants in particular took my attention and provides a challenge for all of us to work harder at this area of our gardening. All the photos speak volumes for the whole day.

07.01.2022 Spring is here and everything is blooming absolutely beautifully. Rain and sun is helping great displays. I wanted to share some pics I took of a friend's garden in William Street, West Hobart. It's a new garden but performing absolutely wonderfully. Can't wait until this time next year to see it mature.

06.01.2022 It is the time for visiting gardens in the south of Tasmania. Before posting some of my recent visits, I'd like to share a photo of one of my dianthus. Called "Dancing Geisha" Comes in pink and white. Can't wait for the pinks to bloom.

04.01.2022 Orange hawkweed has been found at Fern Tree in Hobart. The following information is provided so that members can be aware of this invasive weed and report any sitings. Orange hawkweed is an aggressive invasive daisy, with legislated status at a national level as both an environmental alert weed and an agricultural sleeper weed. It poses a real threat to native alpine and sub-alpine vegetation, and is also capable of invading pasture. If left untreated, orange hawkweed can ou...Continue reading

01.01.2022 It seems no time at all since we had our Annual General Meeting and luncheon at which more than 40 members enjoyed gardener's company for the first time in so many months. Highlight of the luncheon was the presentation to Chris Porte of the Ann Williams Clark Medallion for his contributions to the Club. Many awardees of this Medallion are recognised because of their active participation in much of what clubs do but often the silent supporters go unnoticed. Very few of our ...Club members will have an appreciation of the quiet support which Chris gives to the Club and this is the way Chris wants it. Believe me it is substantial!! CONGRATULATIONS CHRIS. Also it is too many years ago for a gentleman to mention that another member of our club received the same award. Long time President Pat Williams was a worthy recipient and it was appropriate to remember that event during Chris's presentation. See more
