25.01.2022 After leaving Arles it's only a short drive of under 30 minutes to the Camargue - a regional park and nature reserve of more than 820 square kms consisting of a series of lagoons and marsh wetlands cut off from the Mediterranean sea by sand bars. Seaside Saintes-Maries de la Mer is close by with its popular beaches, shops and its famous church with very distinctive architecture and much historical influence from Spanish gypsies settling in the area.
25.01.2022 Seafood Paradise in Bouzigues! If by any chance you are travelling to or from Uzès by car and fancy a day trip or an overnight stay at a gorgeous seaside village on the Bassin de Thau or lagoon between Sète and the Mediterranean Sea not far from Montpellier- can recommend highly going to Bouzigues. Oysters of many sizes are farmed along with mussels plus fresh fish, crayfish and sea snails etc. Excellent seafood restaurants line the shore of the lagoon and the world is literally your oyster along with lovely glasses of Picpoul de Pinet - local white wine which goes well with seafood. A day trip is do-able but clearly if intend to drink then better to stay overnight at very reasonably priced motel or hotel.
24.01.2022 7 Days in Uzès - not quite enough- but a start! Visit my website: www.practicallyfrench.com.au/itinerary/ to read details.... Information on other places to visit under "Things to Do" See more
23.01.2022 Visited one of my favourite places - Aix-en-Provence as it has been several years since my last visit. Drove to Avignon and took the train to Marseille and then another to Aix city centre. Renowned for its association with the post - Impressionist artist Paul Cézanne, its architecture, many high end shops and its wide café lined boulevard Cours Mirabeau it's an easy place to wander through and get slightly lost! One change since my last visit was the glass fronted Apple sto...re opposite the Fontaine de la Rotonde - had me thinking about Federation Square in Melbourne (before I saw that their application has been rejected.) Many Cézanne associated things to do usually but not in March and early April! His art studio was being renovated and recent painting exhibition had just finished. Tourism office does do tours but minimum numbers apply. My hotel bore his name so not all was lost! See more
22.01.2022 Eating out in the South of France is one of the most enjoyable experiences that our guests write about in our Le Rêve comments book. An abundance of market fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, meat and cheese is at your doorstep. Uzès has many cafés, bars, restaurants and 'salon du thé's' to cater for everyone from a simple aperitif before dinner, casual outdoor dining to Michelin starred experiences. Choose from traditional French through to modern French and French/Asian fusion plus Italian, Vietnamese, Belgian and Middle Eastern for variety. Add some local crisp rosé wine or Syrah and enjoy!
20.01.2022 On the trail of Vincent Van Gogh! It's hard not to think of him when you visit towns close to Uzès where he spent important phases of his painting evolution. Arles and the St. Rémy de Provence's Saint-Paul de Mausole psychiatric hospital in particular where he spent a year prior to his death in 1890. Les Baux de Provence is honouring his life works and his study of Japanese art in a superb Sound and Light show of 3D and animation technology "Les carrières et lumières" just 200 metres away from the ascent to the perched village. A must see! along with visiting Saint-Paul de Mausole and visiting his actual room and imagining how the garden and surrounding countryside looked in his days there.
20.01.2022 Students in a "Carnival "parading today down rue Sigalon, Uzès in fancy dress.
20.01.2022 Not sure that SBS did justice to Uzès but this footage was shown elsewhere in the world and starts at Montaren 4 km from Uzès and then showcases quite a lot of Uzès to those who are interested. I believe SBS cut away to the cyclist who fell as they were going through the outskirts of town of Uzès as of course they are the stars and had huge crowd support even in the heat ! Uzès at 0:39 seconds and live coverage through Uzès at 4:16 minutes - Merci bien Didier Charrondas
19.01.2022 At our house (Le Rêve) in Uzès for a short stay. A very different feel in March (in comparison with the peak tourist season) especially at our colourful Saturday market. The plane trees may be mostly bare with buds starting to appear, but the sky is so blue and while the morning was a bit brisk by the afternoon it was 23 degrees - very pleasant indeed!
18.01.2022 The weather here in Uzès is perfect - such a welcome change from winter in Melbourne! Have been out and about with friends and exploring new places such as Château d'Estoublon as well as re-visiting old favourites. Here is a picture summary of my first few days here.
16.01.2022 Uzes, gets three stars in the 2018 edition of the Michelin Guide Green Languedoc-Gorges du Tarn which came out this Tuesday. This guide covers the Gard, Hérault and Lozère. With Honfleur and Sarlat, the ducal city of Uzès joins the very closed circle of cities distinguished by the Michelin guide with under 10,000 inhabitants. This country town of 9.000 inhabitants has 12 banks, 60 restaurants, 260 shops, its famous truffle day and festival of dance. Not to mention the ducal castle and currentDuke of Uzès and nearby Pont du Gard.
14.01.2022 Vaison -la -Romaine: - Great place to visit in just over an hour via the very lovely tourist drive (not the auto-route) steeped in Roman history. Quieter on a Sunday but has a lively brocante market. Split into 2 halves by the river - well worth exploring the variety of art galleries and beautiful ruelles (lanes) up towards the old château. Plenty of places to have a leisurely Sunday lunch too although watch the prices!
14.01.2022 Feasting on fresh seafood!
13.01.2022 One of the new places which I was happy to find on our recent visit to Uzès and can recommend as 50 minutes by car from our house. Click on my website and caption below to see full post.

06.01.2022 Sensational weather to wander around stunning Arles with its Roman links and of course still on the trail of Vincent van Gogh. Always tricks me how the arena suddenly appears as you meander through the narrow streets of tall townhouses. Actually went to a bullfight in the Roman arena many years ago with 2 friends with whom I was backpacking around Europe. Sitting right at the very top on the stones jutting out it was an amazing gladiatorial type atmosphere but have had no desire to go again! Fortunately attitudes have changed and conducted differently now. Place du Forum just near where I stayed very famous Café Terrasse made famous by van Gogh's painting "Café Terrace at Night" with statue of Frederic Mistral and Grand Hotel Nord-Pinus of Picasso, Christian LaCroix and Hemingway fame opposite.
04.01.2022 Searching for the missing link! Nîmes is the closest city to Uzès and has been closely associated ever since the Romans arrived and demonstrated their incredible engineering skills. Water from a spring in Uzès which still supplies Uzès today - went via the Roman Pont du Gard aqueduc to the Nîmes Castellum where 10 lead pipes distributed it. I had been meaning to look for the Castellum long ago and finally decided it was time! It's in a quiet suburban part of Nîmes in a na...rrow 1 way street - easy to miss but if only it could talk! Nîmes itself has a lovely elegance to its historic centre and grand boulevards, but often visitors get a different impression if they come via the commercial or industrial centres. Excellent shopping - shoes, clothes, jewellery etc. and of course plenty of places to eat. Parking is easy in underground car parks but the best way to visit is catching a bus from Uzès for 1.50 euro - a bargain! and walking straight from the railway station to the Roman arena, Maison Carré and historic centre. 03.01.2022 Really enjoyed our meal at Racines in Uzès -a new restaurant just 100 metres down the end of our street and with the "enfant terrible" chef Axel, whose food we have always admired even though his passionate nature has seen him change restaurants and towns a lot!! Great to have him here again especially if you like fish. Menu changes daily.
02.01.2022 Video ad for Van Gogh‘ life works show at Les Baux-de-Provence Carrieres et Lumieres gives best idea of sensory experience. My own videos would not load for some reason!
