24.01.2022 LINK WRAY & HIS RAY-MEN - RAW-HIDE Remembering LINK WRAY (May 2nd 1929 November 5th 2005) The video here is American rock and roll guitarist, songwriter, and ...vocalist LINK WRAY performing his hit RAW-HIDE on Dick Clark's Saturday Night Beech-Nut Show in March 1959. A big thank-you to YouTube channel Heppest Of The Hep for uploading a good quality black and white copy of the film: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaOD8ZVVoaq4yhcpd3qXySA The video features Link Wray on guitar, Shorty Horton on Bass, Doug Wray on Drums and Vernon Wray on Piano. "Wray had scored a hit in April of 1958 with his now ultra-famous and influential tremolo soaked instrumental swamp ballad, Rumble released just under a year before this American Bandstand appearance, but it was banned from the airwaves in some markets for being just too damned raw and for using the slang term (obvious now) for a gang fight," wrote Dangerous Minds. "At the time of this appearance in early 1959, Wray had just released the single for Rawhide (not the version you might be thinking of) that he and the band play on the show. Wray’s Rawhide is also just a cool instrumental in its own right." "More importantly however is that the clip also provides a chance to take a look at the source of Wray’s tone, the ultra-bizzaro 1958 Danelectro Longhorn Guitarlin that Wray plays in the clip and with which he performed and recorded during the last few years of the fifties." "Boasting a very long neck with an unprecedented 31 frets and a deep double cutaway that produces the long horns jutting out from the guitar’s oddly shaped body, the Guitarlin is something to behold in any decade, but this was pretty far out for 1959." "It was so weird, in fact, that only about 200 were ever made between 1958 and 1968 according to one source. It was called a Guitarlin because the long neck allowed for narrow fret spacing close to the guitar body that could supposedly get the player into the mandolin tonal range."

17.01.2022 WAR with ERIC BURDON - TOBACCO ROAD (1969) The video here is WAR with Eric Burdon on vocals performing their version of TOBACCO ROAD on The Della Reese Show in ...1969 The origianl black and white film wasn't in great condition but I've managed to sharpen the picture and inject some colour. The original clip can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKCh8LmemQ4 TOBACCO ROAD was originally written and recorded by American singer and songwriter John D. Loudermilk in 1960 when it was framed as a "folk song" and related the semi-autobiographical tale of growing up in Durham, North Carolina. Released on Columbia Records, it was not a hit for Loudermilk, achieving only minor chart success in Australia. Other artists, however, immediately began recording and performing the song. The Nashville Teens scored a hit single with their recording of the song in 1964, giving it a garage rock 'n' blues feel featuring prominent piano, electric guitar, and bass drum parts and a dual lead vocal. In 1970 it was recorded as a single by Eric Burdon & War, a much shortened version of the 14-minute track on the album "Eric Burdon Declares "War"," the first of two original albums by the funk outfit. Burdon leads the band into an expanded and exploratory version of the song, nailed down by War’s tight support play. ----------------------------------------- Hello, and a warm welcome to everyone who has joined COLOURING THE PAST. The page is my attempt to add a little colour to the cheeks of the past. It's not intended to offer anything 'better' than the original black & white footage; just a different take. Running the page is a one-man operation. I write and research the articles, and edit the videos which involves several hours of work - upscaling, colourising and tweaking in various software. If you could see fit to make a small donation then I would be genuinely grateful. 10.01.2022 Remembering JULIE LONDON [Sep 26th 1926 Oct 18th 2000] JULIE LONDON - CRY ME A RIVER (enhanced colour version) The video here is taken from 'The Girl Can't He...lp It', the 1956 musical comedy film starring Jayne Mansfield in the titular role, Tom Ewell, Edmond O'Brien, Henry Jones, and Julie London. The production was originally intended as a vehicle for the American sex symbol Jayne Mansfield, with a satirical subplot involving teenagers and rock 'n' roll music. The unintended result has been called the "most potent" celebration of rock music ever captured on film. CRY ME A RIVER The bluesy jazz ballad, "Cry Me a River" was originally written for Ella Fitzgerald to sing in the 1920s-set film, Pete Kelly's Blues (released 1955) but the song was ultimately dropped from the movie. The song's first release was by actress and singer Julie London on Liberty Records in 1955, backed by Barney Kessel on guitar and Ray Leatherwood on bass. London had been urged to record the song by Bobby Troup, her future husband following her divorce from Webb. A performance of the song by London in the 1956 film The Girl Can't Help It helped to make it a bestseller (reaching no. 9 on US and no. 22 on UK charts).

03.01.2022 Some see him hopefully travelling on the wings of an albatross embarking on a supernatural journey. I suspect he would just say ‘Oh well’.

02.01.2022 PATSY CLINE - WALKIN' AFTER MIDNIGHT (Town Hall Party - 1958) in colour The video here is Patsy performing the classic WALKIN' AFTER MIDNIGHT on the Town Hall P...arty TV show in 1958. I've upscaled and colourised the original black and white film. 'Town Hall Party' was among the first of the country music shows to be seen on U.S. television, making its debut in early 1952 and running until early 1961. Staged every Saturday in a theatre in Compton, a suburb of Los Angeles. The stage was made up to look like an old barn, thus continuing the traditions of the various live shows that were first heard on the radio airwaves three decades earlier. Although Nashville was fast establishing itself as the commercial home of country music. Written by Alan Block and Donn Hecht and recorded by American country music artist Patsy Cline, "Walkin' After Midnight" was originally given to pop singer Kay Starr; however, her label rejected it. The song was left unused until Hecht rediscovered it when writing for Four Star Records. Originally Cline was not fond of "Walkin' After Midnight", but after making a compromise with her label she recorded it. In January 1957, Cline performed the song on an episode of the CBS television program Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts. It garnered a strong response from viewers and was therefore rush-released as a single on February 11, 1957. "Walkin' After Midnight" became Cline's first major hit single, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard country music chart and No. 12 on its pop chart. Although the song was her only hit until 1961, the single version sold over one million copies and is often included on authoritative lists of the all-time greatest songs in country music. ----------------------------------------- Running the page is a one-man operation.
