21.01.2022 The Little Corella (Cacatua sanguinea), was recently added as a Category Three Declared Pest in some Local Government Area's under the WA Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007. This species is NOT naturally occurring in the South West. They do however, look very similar to the Muir's Corella, which is a protected species endemic to the south west! Confused? LBG is here to help you! Depending on your location, you may or may not require a licence from Parks and Wil...dlife Service, Western Australia to manage pest birds. For more information, or advice on how to identify bird species, contact us! 0488 021 344 [email protected] www.lbginc.org.au More info: https://www.dpaw.wa.gov.au//living-with-wild/cockatoos.pdf

13.01.2022 Plants create the air we breathe and provide most of the food we eat, so it’s vital we do everything we can to keep them healthy. We aim to protect and safegua...rd our agriculture industries, unique biodiversity and natural environment from damaging plant pests, weeds and diseases. Our research focuses on new and better ways to control invasive weeds, curb pests and protect plants from pathogens that could potentially travel in from interstate or overseas. We look at ways of reducing the reliance on pesticides, while better protecting the environment, enhancing natural pest enemies and learning about new beneficial organisms. Our quarantine officers at metropolitan and regional checkpoints protect us from biosecurity threats entering from freight by air, land and sea. We also actively undertake surveillance on the ground, in places such as Perth’s western suburbs, eradicating Queensland fruit fly after it was detected earlier this year. To help protect our plant industries and keep the air we breath and the food we eat healthy it is important for everyone to: Familiarise yourself with the items that pose a risk if brought into WA. https://bit.ly/2R1Eqfw Check your clothes, equipment and vehicles before entering any farm and agricultural properties when traveling to other regions. Snap and send photos of the organisms that interest you using our department apps, MyPestGuide Reporter or PestFax Reporter and help contribute to our knowledgebase of pests. https://bit.ly/2FtZGTH Plant Based Health Australia | #IYPH2020

12.01.2022 Russian wheat aphid (RWA) As of 9 September 2020, there have been 18 confirmed detections of Russian wheat aphid (RWA) in the Esperance region. Detections have been made on Illabo and Sceptre wheat, and Flinders, La Trobe and Planet barley. To date the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) has received 121 RWA reports including both presence and absence of aphids and crop damage. DPIRD appreciates the assistance of growers, agronomists and consul...tants in taking the time to look and send in reports. Surveillance is being conducted outside of the Esperance region due to reports of winged RWA and windy conditions. There is expected to be migration beyond the Esperance region, if there is a substantial green bridge and abundant brome or barley grass, into surrounding shires. https://www.agric.wa.gov.au//russian-wheat-aphid-productio

09.01.2022 Don't mistake this tulip for a pretty wildflower! Whilst you are out and about this Spring enjoying the beautiful wildflowers, remember that some of those "flowers" are actually WEEDS! Now is the time to prepare for treating Cape Tulip!... Cape Tulip is notoriously difficult to control, predominantly due to the small window each year of which it is susceptible to herbicide. Did you know the treatment window can be as little as a few days? Miss this opportunity and your control may be ineffective. For more information visit our website https://lbginc.org.au/2020/09/17/time-to-treat-the-tulip/
07.01.2022 CITRUS GALL WASP: SPRING EMERGENCE MONITORING IS UNDERWAY Citrus gall wasp will emerge soon and will infest the new spring flush if not controlled. Wasps can emerge from galls pruned after June 30 so they must be treated to kill developing larvae. WA citrus growers should stay vigilant and monitor their orchards for citrus gall wasp.... More information can be found via agric.wa.gov.au/citrus-gall-wasp If you see any suspicious growths contact Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development - DPIRD or Leschenault Biosecurity Group www.lbginc.org.au

02.01.2022 Have you received seeds in the mail that you didn’t purchase? Don’t plant them or throw them away, report them! The department has seen an increase in reports o...f unsolicited seeds arriving in Australia through the mail, and we’re asking all Australians to be extra biosecurity aware. These seeds could pose a biosecurity risk, so it is important that any suspicious parcels are reported to the department. Seeds that do not meet our biosecurity conditions may carry a range of invasive species or harmful plant diseases that can threaten your backyard garden, our environment and our agricultural industries. We all have a role to play to protect Australia from biosecurity risks. If you receive seeds in the mail that you didn’t purchase, report it immediately at awe.gov.au/report or by calling 1800 798 636.
