25.01.2022 Today is National Threatened Species Day and to celebrate we are holding a Community Information Session about our new project the Leicester Reserve Possum Sanctuary. Threatened Species Day is about shining a light on all native plants, animals and ecosystems and reflect on how we can protect them. The western ringtail possum is critically endangered, and we are undertaking an exciting project in the Shire of Dardanup, to create a possum sanctuary at Leicester Reserve. Join us tonight at the Bunbury Softball Pavilion in Eaton to hear all about how you can be involved.

23.01.2022 This is Rob McFerran from the Department of Water on site at one of our uPtake project’s on-farm trials, demonstrating the importance of getting your soil tested so you can be confident in your fertiliser decisions. Testing your soil can save your bottom line and prevent runoff to our precious waterways. We are holding a fertiliser field walk next month, all welcome, come and hear these important results and what they can mean for your farm, contact [email protected] for all the details. https://youtu.be/cuDjdpX1VQY

23.01.2022 This is Peta Richards from Department Primary Industries and Regional Development taking soil samples on a local farm for the Healthy Estuaries project. Participants receive whole farm nutrient mapping with the objective of reducing excess nutrients downstream, saving our waterways and farmer’s money. Expressions of interest to be part of our soil mapping project close at the end of the week, so head to www.estuaries.dwer.wa.gov.au to find out more or email [email protected] to register your interest

23.01.2022 Want to hear how testing your soil can save your bottom line and our waterways? Join the LCC next week for a fertiliser field walk, RSVP by the end of today, contact [email protected] for more information.

22.01.2022 Tis the season, the turtle nesting season! Keep a look out when driving for snake-necked turtles crossing the road. These little freshwater turtles are currently on the move looking to lay their eggs and often have to cross roads to find the perfect spot. Their dark shells blend in very well to the bitumen of our roads and, true to turtle form, they are very slow! Please be mindful and slow down if you see one

19.01.2022 Looking for something to do this Saturday? Come down and say hi at the Leschenault Community Nursery Inc Eco Fair! 19.01.2022 This is Peta Richards from DPIRD using innovative drone technology to record pasture trials. On-farm trials as part of our uPtake project demonstrated that addressing limiting nutrients in your soil (eg. nitrogen, sulphur, potassium) and low pH can dramatically increase production and minimise unnecessary losses to nutrients to the environment. We are holding a demonstration day on the 1st October to showcase the importance of soil testing to give farmers confidence in their fertiliser application. Contact [email protected] to find out all the details for this event.

18.01.2022 Do you know your ringtail from your brushtail? Western ringtail possums can be distinguished from larger brushtail possums by their smaller, rounded ...ears, and tails with shorter fur. Their tail fur lies flat and ends in a white tip and is used for climbing. While, as their name suggests, brushtail possums' tails are bushy, and they have more pointed faces than ringtails. Adult brushtail possums are also generally bigger than ringtail possums (1.3kg compared with 1kg) Jiri Lochman You can read about 'The Tale of Two Tails' possum activity run by Nearer to Nature in #LANDSCOPEmagazine shop.dbca.wa.gov.au

17.01.2022 Last year’s results from our uPtake projects on-farm trials demonstrated that if your soil test shows that your soil contains excess phosphorus, adding more phosphorus will not increase productivity, but may add phosphorus to waterways contributing to algal blooms. We are holding a fertiliser field walk next month to show case results from our trial sites, come along and learn how testing your soil can save you dollars, contact [email protected] for more information.

15.01.2022 https://youtu.be/pN24u7EHGhs Last week saw the LCC finish up revegetation work at the Offer farm as part of the Regional Estuaries Initiative (REI). The four year REI Project has seen the LCC fence off a total of 40 kms and revegetate 25.73 Ha of waterways with the objective of reducing erosion and nutrient runoff in the Leschenault estuary and providing important habitat for these ecosystems to thrive. We look forward to continuing this fantastic work beyond 2020 thanks to the Healthy Estuaries WA Project which was recently announced by Mark McGowan and can be read about at https://estuaries.dwer.wa.gov.au/

06.01.2022 In recent times, the Leschenault estuary has shown signs of distress, with sedimentation, harmful algal blooms and fish deaths. There is an urgent need to balance growing urbanisation and intensification of agriculture with the long-term health of the estuary. The LCC and Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) invite residents of Greater Bunbury to find out about the latest on-ground work and information collected on the Leschenault Estuary over the last four years at our Leschenault Estuary Forum, held on Tuesday 17/11 at the Parade Hotel, 5pm.
