25.01.2022 Trying to help your special person with understanding their thoughts, feelings, reactions?..... I have been using Zone of Regulations - a great step by step way to explain what emotions are, triggers, the size of the problem (putting it into perspective) and the Tools to regulate them back to a calmer place. They also have an App that is a fun way to expand and explore the zones further. Some great books to support your child further, are the We Thinkers Series and the ...Learning to Get Along series, which I have found to be a wonderful vision support in explaining feelings, thoughts and practical steps for them to do, to self-calm or ask for help. I hope this can help you support your special person to better express their thoughts and feelings. PS. I am not affiliated with any of these companies/authors, just tried and tested to work with my son and the children I am supporting.

19.01.2022 What is wrong with that boy? He does not really express joy He flaps his arms and lets out a squeal Good Lord! What is his deal? He goes off alone and spins wheels... He never tells us how he feels He actually rarely ever says a word It is mostly gibberish that cannot really be heard He screams when they cut his hair And taking him to the store is very rare He does not like a crowd Nor can tolerate noises that are loud What is wrong with this boy? And did you ever think.. Maybe this boy flaps because of joy His squeal is one of delight We all would be frustrated by a light that is too bright He may not use speech But that does not mean he is beyond reach He communicates in his own way He may be apart but still likes to play Maybe you can enter his space And with kindness understand the struggles he may face He may not always like being with a peer But that is nothing to fear We can simply guide him at his own pace His development is not a race Because his feelings he cannot always share Does not mean that we should not care His language we must begin to know This will truly be the means in which he will grow. What is wrong with this boy many ask without exception Rather what is wrong with our perception? -Dan L. Edmunds, Ed.D. See more

18.01.2022 Happy New Year to you all! I am starting off the new year with a new schedule board for my son and wanted to share it with you. I have created this and can be personalised to suit your person. It is a magnetic whiteboard that has been professional printed. Schedule / Reward charts are an invaluable tool to let them know what is happening in their world and offer choice and something to work for.... We all have diaries/calendars to keep track of what our plans are, our children need the same thing. When prepared for an upcoming event, their feelings / anxiety levels can be reduced. If you would like further consultation on how to create and implement a schedule / reward system for your person, please message me, as I am very happy to help. I am in the middle of getting my printed and quotes, so can give the finished product when done but attached the artwork for now.

13.01.2022 Social Stories.... ever used one? Need help, I very happy to help or I hope the below can give you some help. They can be very useful when a person is having difficulty understanding or exhibiting appropriate behaviour. Social Stories are in a set format. Usually in the first person - from the persons perspective, answering who, what, when, where and why - situation or target behaviour.... A Story always has: A Heading (explains what you teaching) An Introduction, Body and Conclusion. You can have only one line / sentence or picture per section, but you need all sections. Sentences - There is two main types - descriptive and directive. 1. Descriptive Sentence - a. state the fact - My name is.... The teacher is standing....... b. Include thoughts and feelings - eg. Many people want to learn. Mum and Dad will be proud when I sleep in my our bed c. Identify what others can do to help the student if it is needed (e.g., If I feel upset, my teacher can help by___.) d. Express a shared opinion or reassure the student e.g. This is okay 2. Directive sentences - a. Identify possible responses e.g. If I need a break, I can tell the teacher or put the break card on my desk and go to the beanbag. b. Gently direct behavior e.g. I will try to ____. Always end with a confident statement! There are some great sites to help and some apps too: How to write a Social Story http://www.thegraycenter.org/component/content/article/79** https://vkc.mc.vanderbilt.edu//tipsh/socialstoriestips.pdf Example of Social Stories http://www.oneplaceforspecialneeds.com/main/resources.html social stories Trouble getting your child to sleep: https://www.sleephaven.ca/make-family-sleep-manners-chart/ Apps Social Stories iHelpSNKids

11.01.2022 I need to do a huge shout out to an amazing man. Bayley (my son) has started doing Mixed Marital Arts with Brett Anderson @freestylemmatrainingacademy... This beautiful man is patient, encouraging and moves with Bayleys understanding. Bayley is developing his receptive language, crossing his mid-line, coordination, fitness and social interaction - doing what 15 year old young man do! We are so proud of how well Bayley is doing under Bretts tuition. We would recommend Brett to anyone looking for support for your child, with or without special needs. He really has been such a blessing to our family. Thank you Brett!

09.01.2022 https://www.facebook.com/100004300385636//1349379431882057 Never limit our special people , they will always reach for the stars.... lets help them touch them!

03.01.2022 Building the foundation of language begins with the interaction between two people. We can really concentrate on hearing words but until a child learns to: Pay attention to people Listen to what others say... Initiate contact with other people Enjoy playing together and sharing experiences ...... he / shes not ready to understand and use words. Social skills are the foundation for language. Early intervention works! Remember that you are your childs first and best teacher!

02.01.2022 Its Autism Awareness Month in April. The Autism journey is different for each of our children and their families but the support, acceptance and kindness / love from family, friends and the community is a necessity! As we know it takes a community to raise a child and for our children on the spectrum, this is critical. Please offer your support when and where you can.
