I had the chance to pause a moment with an amazing group of women for International Women’s Day on March 9th. Towards the end of that same month the world was about to change and at that point we weren’t aware by just how much. 16.01.2022 Each year between November and March, a dry trade wind blows across the Saharan Desert, sweeping over the West African subcontinent, bringing with it at times dust and sandstorms. This season is known as Harmattan, when dust suspends in the atmosphere giving an ethereal quality to the landscape. It also means that it leaves skin dry and lips chapped and the soothing and emollient qualities of the rich textured Shea Butter is sought after by those living in the various region...s. Shea Butter comes from the nut of a tree with many names, growing wild stretching from the foothills of Ethiopia to the savannah belt of West Africa. The name as we recognise it in English, has been derived from the Bambara word for the tree, s’í. Just as there are various names for it, there are multiple applications for it too, from traditional cooking to medicinal preparations to name some. The Kassena people who live on the border of Ghana & Burkina Faso are known for their striking geometric patterned architecture. Dwellings are built by the men and plastered by the women using oily water leftover from shea butter production, which helps to waterproof. Its protective barrier is what we prize it for in the west, along with its emollient qualities, but it’s in skincare products you’ll find it here. And that’s exactly why we enrich each soap with this precious ingredient. It’s intensely moisturising qualities means that when you step out of the tub or shower, it’s with skin that doesn’t feel irritated or uncomfortable like other products may leave it, but softened and supple. 07.01.2022 L’essence lovers, what are the rituals you create for yourself? For me, it is about stealing some hours on a Sunday to splurge on myself. Get out of bed when I want to, rather than when I feel I have to and when I do finally get up, it’s deliciously lazy. My routine may vary, but that time is mine, to do with as I please.... To realign myself, be in the moment and be grateful for the beauty that is in this world, by honouring the body I’ve been given to experience it. You are putting those hours in each week babe, working hard at life. YOU are deserving of this time, ALWAYS, however you choose to honour yourself. This morning my feet are in need of some TLC so it’s a soak with some of our Rose & Patchouli Mineral Bath Salts, a little pumice goodness, and finally followed by our Rose Geranium & Patchouli Bath and Body Oil. 06.01.2022 Recently l’essence had a Five Day Detox from IG. Some thoughts I shared via there today: It seems fitting, on the second day of a brand-new shiny spring in Australia, to come out the other side of our Five-Day IG Detox. A spring clean to all those behaviours that creep in, where I find myself down delicious but none-the-less rabbit holes. It’s really not hard to do with inspiring content available 24/7. During the past five days, I thought back to the time before social... media . The equivalent for me (you too?) was devouring a favourite magazine from cover to cover, but there was never the need to - of course - check in with it regularly throughout the day for updates. What these five days reinforced was reclaiming the lost hours to IG and replacing them with meaningful activities to me: - Caught up with good friends and family - long overdue - I’d put a hold on listening to any audio books being too distracted but success, I managed to finish one and begin another - Made a start on a spring clean - there’s always something cathartic about a good spring clean! - We enjoyed a family meal around the fire where we hadn’t had one fire all season unusual for us! - I managed to fit in two gorgeous baths and so glad I did as it felt too long - many showers in between - I hadn’t worked on much writing for pleasure since April. That was until last night when I put some words to a screen. Not many, but it’s a start. And when I removed the IG app from my phone, I noticed how my screen time was dramatically reduced. No further comment It was nice to have permission not that we should feel that way - for a mini-hibernation from IG to recharge. It isn’t going anywhere, always there for whenever we decide to log back on, just as I’m excited now to see and be able to interact with all your stories and beautiful feeds. It was emphasised as well to me the importance of IG too. The amount of times I came across a new business and resisted visiting their account made me realise how we rely on this platform to further understand a brand and their ethos. So now I’m making a plan to implement more balance with my time which I hope will only be more impactful as we focus between keeping up to date with our ig faves and sharing more valuable content regularly. As for rabbit holes, perhaps those are reserved for the very occasional splurge. And if it feels like things are getting a little out of hand again, there’s always the Five-Day IG Detox.
