25.01.2022 Winter has arrived! And with it the need for more filling, satisfying dinners to help keep us feeling snug. I threw this lot of fresh veg and meat (and tonnes of garlic and onion;) in the slow cooker this morning and it is now a glorious looking (and smelling!) melt in your mouth sauce full of nutrients. I will cook up some organic basmati rice (my daughters fave) as a base (brown rice is great too) and finish with a dollop of natural yoghurt. So easy, nourishing and dinner is sorted! #wintershere #getyourslowcookersout

21.01.2022 Today, under the microscope Neutrophils are white blood cells. An integral part of our immune defence force, making up about 60% of all white blood cells seen during a screening. These bright little immune soldiers have sparkling granules inside which contain antibacterial enzymes to destroy any engulfed bacteria, fungi and foreign materials. You can see these guys moving on screen called cytoplasmic streaming-amazing to watch! ... They act as a 'clean-up squad' for cell debris and other waste. Neutrophils are the first to arrive at a site of physical trauma (eg. cut finger) and are typically in the blood for 7-10 hours before moving into the body tissues. They release toxic chemicals to kill various microbes and parasites, as well as virally infected cells or cancer. As if they weren't bad ass enough, they also 'train' other immune cells to attack specific invaders Probably one of my favourite cells to watch on screen, the two pictured streamed beautifully and had the average one to four lobed nucleus (an indicator of age). If you would like to book in to have a look at your immune cells with myself at The Village Health Store call Gaye.. p. 55690 737
12.01.2022 Leading on from my last post, here is this years list for "The Clean 15" and "The Dirty Dozen", handy to save in your phone for shopping! The money I do save on fruit/veg from the Clean 15 I tend to splurge more on organic items from the DD list....namely the very porous blueberries and spinach, which my family eat almost daily and are SO NUTRITIOUS. The others get a good wash and soak!
08.01.2022 Eating 'healthy' does not have to be 'expensive'!! All of these fruit and veges below cost me $20 (that's right...$20?!) and all are from Auzzie farmers (with exception to the Garlic, it's Spanish). Prices ranged from 60c to $1.50 and $3 for a bag of avos-gotta love that?! Try and avoid the big chain store fruit/veg sections, as alot of stock is often foreign and much more expensive, especially in bulk for families.... Find your local fruit barn or weekend market and ask them where they source their stockit works out SO much cheaper and you're supporting locals :) And no, none of these are organic (my tight family budget doesn't allow it). Anything on the 'Dirty Dozen' list (I will post about this later:) gets a white vinegar soak in the sink as pictured, for a couple of hours before rinsing, drying and storing to get any residual pesticides off :) It all comes down to shopping smarter with our fresh foods!
05.01.2022 Breakfast today included half a smashed avocado, one of my fave 'super foods'! It contains liver cleansing Glutathione, skin loving Vitamin E and monounsaturated fatty acids (good fats!). These particular fats enhance the absorption of carotenoids (as found in the antioxidant rich tomatoes) as they are 'lipophilic' (fat soluble). By tossing a few slices of avo in your salad or salsa you will increase your bodies ability to absorb all the healthy goodness that the carotenoids... in veges have to offer!! Eggs high quality, easily digestible protein that have a great supply of CHOLINE which is VERY important for our cells. It is needed for methylation (how the cells send messages back and forth) and a key part of acetyl-choline, a neurotransmitter that carries messages to and from nerves. Annnnd...did you know that peptides in egg whites can bind to E.coli and prevent infection?!
