22.01.2022 The most common question each parent often asks us and themselves is: Is my child ready to start school? It is important to understand that school readiness skills and school preparation skills are two different things and both are equally important. School Readiness skills are the key emotional and social skills which each child should possess to help their transition to school. ... Our dual control scissors have been perfect for Miss A, as now you can see she doesnt need her mums help (with the two loop holes) and our blades are rounded and safe for her. 19.01.2022 Moo, baa, neigh, oink! When I first started working as a speechie, I felt really silly saying these sounds over and over in therapy sessions. We use animal sounds to first get children talking, as they are easy sound combinations and kids love them! Our stampers are perfect for this. We have the animals, transport and dinosaurs. Use them to encourage your child to talk. www.letstalkshop.com.au xo

19.01.2022 Have you ever thought about the way your child holds their pencil when they are 2 or 3 years of age? The development of a correct pencil grip happens very early on, not just when children start school. You want to create good habits from the start, rather than have to reteach. The triangle shape is perfect for correct grip. It is even able to put the kids back on, which is a bonus for clean up! No bans needed on these markers in the . 18.01.2022 Children with ASD struggle with change in routine. Sometimes I need to change therapy rooms for one of their sessions. Without working on this skill beforehand, this would cause a complete meltdown and hinder learning. However, in the lead up to the room change, I teach through our play that change is not a bad thing. ONE LITTLE TRAIN GAME I use my trains, which we normally use for threading, and instead use them as a hide and seek game. The child starts threading and say we ...thread one, then we hide one. Often I start with just me modelling the hiding part, as they dont want to change the traditional game. After modelling 5 times, then I guide and invite them to hide a train with me. It could take 5 + goes before they are ok with the change in routine, but they are starting to learnt to trust me and cope with a little change. Find our trains by clicking on the picture xo www.letstalkshop.com.au

17.01.2022 Why is ROUTINE with our kids so important? Most humans are creatures of habit. Whether we are 5, 20 or 50- we all have our own things we like done a certain way. We like to know whats happening and when its happening. Its the same with our children. By creating a routine for children, we create and great environment for them to learn. They are not anxious or worried about uncertainty or unpredictable things. We create this safe space and routine in every single thera...py session, and children thrive with us! Routine also can assist in decreasing behavioural issues, such as not wanting to pack away, as children develop a sense of predictability. How can you create a routine? Grab a calender, and jot down all the things you do in the days/ weeks, that never change, such as eating breakfast, getting dressed, cooking dinner, going to the shops, cleaning, visiting friends, having story time, having play time, outside time, pool time, bedtime etc. Once you actually stop and think about the activities that you do, you realise how much your children and you do in one day! Its huge! Plan your days/ week out in order and reinforce this with your children. Start the routine with your child and stick to it. It may be hard at first, as your child may not want to do things at certain times or may have difficulties adjusting- but over time this will get easier for them (and you!) 17.01.2022 Being a mum of a child who has ASD, ADHD, Down Syndrome, Fragile X (the list can go on) is a journey. A journey of discovery. Life is up and down. Some things that are easy for most children are hard for yours. Some things that come naturally to other children, dont come to yours. I had a text message from a mum this week saying that her son normally cried when he had to do sensory activities like touch play-dough. She sent me a picture of him playing with our soft dough f...or the first time and not crying and it melted my heart. My goal for Lets Talk Shop was to be able to help kids near and far. To encourage their communication but also their potential. It is a small step but a massive milestone for him and his family and its a privilege to be able to help! Its so important to remember to always value the small steps and milestones. They are the true wins in the big picture xo www.letstalkshop.com.au See more

13.01.2022 Bravery is defined as the quality that allows someone to do things that are dangerous or frightening. Lets face it, lots of things are scary to a child. The unknown for some children (and adults) is downright petrifying. Lets encourage our children to be brave when they are afraid. 07.01.2022 Whats your childs learning style? As a therapist, a learning style, is something that I really seek to understand about a child. Find it, you connect and they learn! ... 07.01.2022 The voice is a small part of the body but one of the most important. Without a voice how would we communicate? Without being too technical, the way the voice works is: 1) Air comes out of the lungs, and up into the larynx (voice box)... 2) The air makes your vocal folds vibrate and move 3) As your vocal folds move, they open and shut, alternatively trapping air and releasing it 4) The air moves into your pharynx (throat) and up through your mouth 5) The air leaves the mouth and what we hear is your voice 6) When your vocal folds move or stretch in certain ways, this changes your pitch The vocal folds are muscles. Just like any muscle in the body, they need to be looked after otherwise problems may occur. Any condition where a persons voice is not sounding normal can be called a voice disorder. This can happen to both children and adults. Often it can happen with a cold or other illness; however generally, this is not permanent and the voice will improve as the persons overall health improves. However, for some, their voice always sounds a bit off. Stay tuned for my next post tomorrow, on how to determine if your child has a voice disorder.. In the meantime, dont forget to get your Christmas shopping done the easy way. This collection is selling fast! 03.01.2022 AUDITORY LEARNER STYLES- PART THREE Learners that have this strength LOVE using sound and music. They learn well using sound, rhyming, rhythm and melody to help them learn. They learn well with word associations, mnemonics, acrostics, songs and music that makes you want to take on the world! They like participating in discussions and repeating facts with eyes closed. ... Generally, auditory learners tend to speak more slowly, explain things well, be natural listeners, repeat things aloud, read slowly and prefer to hear rather than read information. Remember this is general and we dont want to box our children into a specific square, but understanding their and your learning style (which may be different to yours), may help you teach them! www.letstalkshop.com.au

03.01.2022 Following on from my post all about voice disorders, from yesterday.. How to tell if your child may or may not have a voice disorder Some indications of a voice disorder are:... Hoarse, croaky, strained, tired or shaky voice quality Constantly losing your voice A voice that is too soft to be heard or doesnt carry across background noise Unusual pitch- constantly too high or too low (compared to others that are the same age and gender) A sore, scratchy, dry or uncomfortable throat The need to constantly cough or clear the throat during or after talking SO WHAT CAN BE DONE? There are a few basic things that you can do to help your voice. Stay well hydrated with water and avoid dehydrating drinks (caffeine, alcohol), drugs (tobacco) and medications (antihistamines, cold and flu meds). Avoid coughing or clearing your throat. Try to swallow and take a sip of water to clear your throat. Try to talk without straining your voice and throat and try to be conscious where you are projecting your voice from. Avoid whispering or using an unnaturally soft or breathy voice. Warm up your voice before using it for long period of time and warm down once finished. Remember its just like any other muscle in the body. Avoid foods that encourage reflux or increase in saliva (chocolate, very spicy foods, foods with a high acid content, full fat dairy products, high fat foods). Remember this is general list- this differs between individuals. Avoid menthol based throat lozengers- as they dry out the throat and voice box. Avoid dry, duty or polluted environments. Breathe through your nose, rather than mouth. Manage your stress levels. Consult your GP to see if any side effects of medications may affect your childs throat or voice Manage overall health (sleep, weight, diet) Often consultations with an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist (ENT) is beneficial, as referred by your GP. Send me a message if you have any further questions! xo www.letstalkshop.com.au
