23.01.2022 Thoroughly enjoying this webinar focussed on Mental Health during the Pandemic (encouraging people to reach out to Beyond Blue and other services for support).

23.01.2022 I recommend this podcast series and this particular podcast. The Creative Recovery Network is a powerful contributor to the national and international discussion about resilience and innovation. And Amanda is a fabulous example of those working across this sector in multiple roles, making a difference every day. Click on the link, download the app, tune in and enjoy.

22.01.2022 It is so important that roles like Dani’s exist and are filled locally. Dani and Andy play a really important part in their community’s recovery. Great short video..

22.01.2022 Good news story of how community groups are building community resilience.

20.01.2022 Steve Pascoe is one of Australia's most experienced community recovery specialists. This edition of Landline includes an item on the community of Mallacootta, where Steve is supporting the locals to lead their own community recovery process after the bushfires of Black Summer. We need more community led work like this, and for governments to get behind community and support from that position. Thank you Steve and thanks to the ABC for sharing this story.

19.01.2022 It gets more and more frightening. We must change how we approach the environment, climate change and emergencies. Summer is coming...

19.01.2022 It's time everyone. Stay safe.

19.01.2022 It is certainly a strange process working remotely to support communities affected by the fires of 2019-2020 - Black Summer. Conducting meetings, interviews and conversations over Zoom works well. Some people are finding that they quite prefer it, others are exhausted by the constant stream of video participation all day. I think it is a question of balance and self discipline. As someone who usually finds it difficult to say no to interesting invitations and requests for... help, I am practicing choosing the webinars I join, the contracts I take on, and the volunteer projects I drive. This has been a great time to focus on the AWE Network - the Australasian Women in Emergencies Network. We have launched a Mentoring program and are about to launch a Conversation series. I wonder how everyone is feeling. I feel like I'm now pacing myself more effectively, and 'hitting my stride'.... See more

17.01.2022 Delighted to have launched the Community Engagement for Disaster Resilience National Handbook this afternoon. It was a labour of love - not only for me as the author, for AIDR as the funder, but also for the many experts and advisors in the Working Group. We did it!! Now available at AIDR's website https://knowledge.aidr.org.au//handbook-community-engagem/

17.01.2022 It is a good thing that the Hon Shane Stone supports this approach. He walks the talk on community led and it has been a pleasure to work with him and his team. Now to await the news of who will head the new agency.... and when things will begin.

15.01.2022 About to attend this conference online.. Hoping for someth ing new to suggests action towards change...

13.01.2022 Looking forward to hearing about these outcomes and recommendations - tuning in tonight

13.01.2022 Monash University are conducting surveys at regular intervals to keep track of how Australian's are feeling about COVID and how we are coping. This only takes a few minutes. It is clear that they are going to feed information to governments about what kind of support we all need now or think we might need in the future. I encourage everyone to participate so that this advice to governments can be based on our voices. https://www.monash.edu//living-with-covid-19-restrictions- #COVID #communities

12.01.2022 Covid and post fires and floods.... the aspiration.

11.01.2022 Proud to have authored this Handbook - and to be launching it next week.

09.01.2022 Looking forward to launching our conversation series tonight - for members of Australian Women in Emergencies (AWE).

09.01.2022 I am delighted to be fulfilling the role of MC for this wonderful panel at today's ANZ Disaster Management Conference. They have a powerful story to tell about resilience and recovery after the floods of 2019 that affected vast areas of Western Queensland. Read on for a strong example of community resilience with external support based on listening to the locals and responding to local needs.

09.01.2022 During the 2019-2020 bushfire season I felt helpless. I wanted to volunteer to assist in some way. I knew that I had useful knowledge and skills, but I was not registered with the Red Cross or with any other volunteer management agency. In the crisis, noone could take the time to deal with my offer of assistance. Volunteers need to be registered to be of use. I have registered this morning on the Victorian Volunteer Register - so that I'm already on the list if crises happen again. I encourage anyone across Victoria, who wants to be able to provide assistance immediately during or after any disaster, to register. https://www.wevolunteer.org.au/#volunteers

09.01.2022 This is a really powerful and well written article about loss and grief and the tragedy we are living in... very sad and I fear true...

08.01.2022 The Australian Women in Emergencies Network (AWE) is a network of 1,400 women who work in government, non-government, emergency service agencies, academia, as paid employees or staff, as volunteers, as students. We have members from Australia and New Zealand and even a small number from across the globe. Together we represent a strong voice for understanding all aspects of emergency management, disaster risk reduction and disaster resilience. One important issue is traum...a and in particular how children experience and recover from trauma and disaster. Ruth Wraith has considerable experience in this area. I will have the pleasure of having a conversation with Ruth next Thursday afternoon (5pm on 18 June). Members of our Network will have the opportunity to listen in, ask questions and benefit from Ruth's considerable expertise. Join AWE today!! https://www.awenetwork.org.au/ See more

07.01.2022 If like me you missed this show last night, or if you saw it and want others to watch, Big Weather is on iview. It is great to see that issues of disaster awareness and preparation are making it onto our screens. We need to know more as a population if we are to understand and prepare for the future.

06.01.2022 Waiting patiently to watch the launch of this important report... Two hopes: that the recommendations are impressive and inclusive, and that the organisations and all levels of government listen. Fingers crossed....

06.01.2022 Such a fabulous story. Well done Jamie!!

06.01.2022 I had the great pleasure of having a conversation with Ruth Wraithe recently - as part of the Australasian Women in Australia Network (AWE). Ruth is a leader and an inspiration in relation to child trauma, disasters and emergencies. This conversation is part of our ongoing series of conversations with key members of our network. https://www.youtube.com/watch #childtrauma #emergencies #CommunityResilience

03.01.2022 It would be so great to use this resource with a community - to plan for the disasters ahead. Lisa Gibbs and her team are terrific - a great balance of intelligent, thorough thinkers, evidence based, practical and compassionate. They do great work. This resource is really appealing - practical, useful, easy to read, thorough. Just what communities and practitioners want.

03.01.2022 I've been spending some time in the last few weeks, updating my website and learning how to upload videos (I now have a Leva Digital tab! Pretty happy with the results. Now it more accurately demonstrates projects I've completed and work that I do... This is me bravely sharing.... http://levaconsulting.com.au/

02.01.2022 I'm not sure if this link will work... but I found this session with Dr Rob Gordon and hosted by Sharna Whitehead from the Corangamite Shire Council to be really very useful. COVID19 is not the same as other emergencies and disasters and many of us (including Rob) are still processing what the key differences are and how we need to respond to the situation to build resilience. We have much to learn and many conversations to have. This is worth a listen....

02.01.2022 Interestingly I finished my submission to the Bushfire Royal Commission last night and called for creating a resilient Australia to be the purpose of the collection of agencies that make up our government. There is a role to play for infrastructure and transport, for social services, for education, for employment. National Security and Defence.. each agency and each Minister must lead the way and change our current course. I also called for an organisation to coordinate ...and collaborate in matters of national resilience (notice I have not limited this to national security - although we could have a semantic discussion about both). I too believe we will see worse in the future than we have seen so far.... in terms of natural disasters and pandemic and conflict. Don't get me wrong - I am optimistic, but only if we prepare well and engage everyone in the task.

01.01.2022 Renae and I find that we have so much in common about how we want to 'do disasters differently', and how much the system must change. Have a listen and see what you think...
