Being my last month if you want to squeeze in 3 sessions before I leave Im doing 10% off each of the 3 sessions. If you have any general niggles or restrictions that are inhibiting you during training or everyday life feel free to msg me to have a chat about the best approach for you recovery or book in - one session is great for general issues/recovery. 18.01.2022 Are you interested in having a Structural Bodywork session but not sure hows its different from Remedial Massage? Structural Bodywork is a combination of Remedial Massage and Structural Integration. It involves a detailed assessment, as well as looking at posture, movement and gait, to help identify areas that may be restricted, compressed or affecting your function. This information helps develop a strategy specifically for you.... This work can be done as a one-off session or as a three-session series. The three-series has a clear beginning, middle and end and is excellent for those seeking a full-body approach, without committing to the full Structural integration process. It involves hands-on treatment using myofascial techniques, and movement to give you more freedom, body awareness and ease in your movement. You will be reassessed throughout the treatment, and you will be given exercises and tips on self-release at home. Clients report a reduction in pain, smoother movement, feeling lighter, taller and more comfortable in their bodies. The first session focuses on the lower body, the second session focuses on the upper body, and the third session focuses on the spine and unifying the previous sessions to integrate the body as a connected whole. 12.01.2022 Broken Hill, As I approach my last week of treatment , I am very sad to be leaving but very excited to announce that Sophia @ Muscle Sense will be open to taking everyone in to her amazing hands! Sophia will be coming down on the 31st August - 1st September to Crystal Medical & Health (formally CrossFit BH, Old Legion Club) and will be available for an appointment via email: [email protected]... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is a little about Sophia: Im Sophia, Im a Remedial Massage Therapist, a Registered Nurse and a Structural Integration Practitioner (ATSI). I have over 3 years massage experience, 6 years nursing experience. I help active men and women with poor movement patterns and pain move more effectively by becoming more aware of their body and postural patterns. I treat postural patterns, I dont treat symptoms. I was inspired to start Structural Integration work due to the fact I was having particular niggles in my own body after a few years of weightlifting in my shoulders, knees and hips - they wouldnt go away! I struggled to find a therapist who explained to me the reason why I was having recurrent injury. All I knew was I had inflammation in my shoulder and my knee. After continuous treatments to the same areas with minimal relief, I was pointed in the direction of a book called Anatomy Trains. This is where I found Anatomy Trains Structural Integration and I knew this was what was missing after experiencing the full Structural Integration 12-Series my little niggles resolved and I was moving with coordination and flow for the first time in my life. Good bodywork, whether it be physiotherapy, chiropractic or massage should create long term change. This means looking beyond your shoulder, back, hip or knee pain and assessing your body as a whole functioning unit. You are unique just as your treatments should be. Structural Integration puts you back in the drivers seat of your body so you can experience life to its full potential pain free.

08.01.2022 Movement Mondays with Lewis Each Monday we will be exploring a different muscle/muscle group through Anatomy, Feel & Play. The goal of each post will be to ...inform and give YOU a sense of body awareness/movement, which overtime may increase your overall awareness and connection to YOUR amazing body. This week we will be turning our attention & awareness to the extremely wide and powerful Latissimus Dorsi. *I will be using either a prickle pod, spikey massage ball or soft massage ball each week. Today I will be using a prickle pod but a spikey massage ball works equally as well. We do offer all items on our Facebook store or in clinic (see picture). If you use your own tools, please make sure they are SOFT. ANATOMY Its all in the name, the Latissimus Dorsi tells us that it is wide muscle of the back. Whats quite amazing is just how wide, attaching to the medial lip of the bicipital groove of the humerus (or as my clients simply say, the upper arm) it drapes across and attaches to not only the spinous processes of the thoracic and lumbar region but all the way down to the sacrum and iliac crest amazing! The main actions of the Latissimus Dorsi are medial rotation of the arm, adduction of the arm (towards the body) & extension of the arm. A movement that utilises all three of these main actions is swimming, hence its association as the swimmers muscle. For many people, held medial rotation of the upper arm is a very common postural pattern in our society. It is not only predisposed to those who are in seated working roles but even those in standing/movement roles such as hairdressers, tradespeople and checkout attendants. Interestingly, the Latissimus Dorsi and the Pectoralis Major share both a synergistic and antagonist relationship in movement actions of the arm. Therefore, lack of awareness/movement in one can compromise the other or both can compromise the structure posturally and in movement. FEEL In standing position raise your arm and place your opposite hand posteriorly and under the axillary fold (arm pit area), lower the raised arm. Now that we are in position (see picture Feel), lets feel for awareness/movement through some of the Latissimus Dorsis actions outlined in the Anatomy section. You dont have to do all of the actions outlined below, just work with what works for your body and your range of motion. Extension (pictured top row Feel): Start by raising your arm above your head, palm facing forward. Slowly bring your arm down into full extension and then raising back to the start position. Can you feel Latissimus Dorsi contract/move? As you move through this motion, slowly move your hand down, going as far as the posterior iiac crest. Did you feel awareness/movement along the whole lateral border or were there some areas where there was little awareness/movement? Take note of those areas as they will be important for Play. Medial rotation (pictured bottom row Feel): start by externally rotating the arm, your palm should be open and facing forward. Slowly medially rotate the arm and then externally rotate your arm. Ask yourself the questions outlined above and slowly work your way down. Adduction (not pictured): start by raising arm to 90 degrees, palms facing down. Slowly lower the arm towards your body and raising back to the start position. Again, ask yourself the questions outlined above and slowly work your way down. PLAY 1. Using a prickle pod, place it against the wall level to your arm pit area or to the areas where you felt there was a lack of awareness/movement. 2. Take your time & SLOWLY meet the pressure of the pod allowing it to sink in to the Latissimus Dorsi. 3. Once you have met the pressure of the pod, you can either play with medial rotation or extension of the arm adduction is a little tricky in this situation (see picture Play, top row extension & bottom row medial rotation) 4. Play with your desired movement SLOWLY and until you feel a sense of ease in the area of focus or have completed your desired amount of movements. 5. Remove the pod and place your opposite hand back under the arm pit area or where you felt there was a lack of awareness/movement before. Do you notice a difference as you either medially rotate, adduct or extend the arm? Is there more awareness/movement than before? Do you feel a sense freedom/ease? How does the opposite Latissimus Dorsi feel in comparison? Move both arms through medial rotation, adduction or extension and again just notice. For those posturally stuck in medial rotation as outlined in in the anatomy section, is there a reduction in medial rotation? Do you feel more open in the chest? Remembering the relationship between the Pectoralis major. 6. Repeat the process on the opposite Latissimus Dorsi. Again, take time to notice, can you maintain this new sense of awareness as you stand statically or walk? Can you maintain it for a day? Feel & Play for the Latissimus Dorsi may also be a great warm-up addition to those who engage in physical activity, particularly on days when you are requiring balanced awareness & engagement of the Latissimus Dorsi. Let me know how you go in the comments below or if you have any questions. I look forward to sharing more next Monday! Lewis.

07.01.2022 Last day of treatments in the Hill

07.01.2022 Happy Monday Everyone! I've been out on a hike this morning enjoying the beautiful Perth hills before a busy week in clinic. Mid hike and full of energy I also made a peace offering to the hiking god, backdropped by an epic vista (pictured in the middle) ... Look forward to seeing you in clinic. Lewis

06.01.2022 How was everyones WEEKEND? I attended a workshop focused on treating FROZEN SHOULDER & HIP PAIN DYSFUNCTION The workshop was ran by Stuart Hinds, a leading Australian soft tissue therapist with over 27 years experience in professional practice.... What a great weekend. Cheers, Lewis

05.01.2022 Hi everyone, I am Lewis and I work at two clinics, one in Secret Harbour and the other in Fremantle. Over the coming weeks I wanted to share my story and tell you how I found my passion in bodywork and why movement is important to me. Heres a photo from some 7 years ago...I didnt realise at the time but I was on the cusp of changing the trajectory of my life for the better and perhaps my fashion sense too?... Due to a little late night revelry and the bright idea to take a shortcut I had a fall and managed to sprain both my ankles! And cause some pretty serious trauma to my lower back - not bad for a few casual drinks after work? As luck would have it, there was no structural damage phew! However, the residual pain was very real and seemed to linger well past the normal recovery time. As the weeks, months and eventually years passed I learnt from various health professionals that my pain was chronic and I would just have to live with it. I accepted that fact and lived in that box for quite some time... I gave up movement, going to the gym and living a physical lifestyle - I was too scared to move! For me, movement meant pain and this was quite distressing at the time. I loved running most of all and to give that was really quite heartbreaking There was a breaking point of course, I was driving to my sisters house and as I stopped to get out I realised I couldnt! I was stuck, the pain was so intense in my lower back that I couldnt do anything but just sit in the car. In that moment my mind just snapped, I felt so inadequate and at a loss of what to do I just broke... "What if?" Thats what popped into my head as I sat slumped and immobile. What if I can teach myself to overcome this pain or better yet get rid of it altogether? That spark created a deep obsession to learn about the body and a drive within myself that I had not yet felt before. Initially, and if Im being honest it was all about me but thankfully as time went on it became less about me and more about helping others in the same situation as my knowledge and experience grew. Ive learnt from that experience when youre in the thick of it, you dont often realise you are on the cusp of something new and exciting. For the longest time I felt like that fall was a curse, I was bitter and quite hard on myself but looking back now it was the ultimate gift - more on that next week. Im curious, was there ever a time in your life when you were on the cusp of a brand new trajectory in life? yet at the time it felt as if the whole world was on your shoulders? I would love to here from you below. Lewis.

05.01.2022 Movement Mondays with Lewis This Monday we will be exploring the larger than life Pectoralis Major through Anatomy, Feel & Play. *I will be using SMOOTH ma...ssage ball this week, but spikey ball works well too! We do offer all items on our Facebook store or in clinic (see picture). If you use your own tools, please make sure they are SOFT. ANATOMY The main actions of the Pectoralis Major (Pec Major) is medial rotation of the arm, adduction (toward midline of body) of the arm and flexion/extension the arm. Much of our attention in this post will be focused on medial rotation of the arm, which for many becomes a held position. Rounded shoulders is a very common postural pattern in our society. As we learnt in the Latissimus Dorsi post, the Pec Major can also contribute to this postural pattern through poor postural habits sitting in a compromised positions - repetitive strain or general daily activities and even over-training the Pec Major at the gym. FEEL Lets feel for Pec Major through medial rotation of the arm. In standing position place the base of your palm horizontally on your sternum so that your fingers meet the crease of your arm pit (see picture Feel). Now that your hand is in position, rotate your opposite arm so that your palm is facing behind you. This is medial rotation of the arm, the Pec Major is shortened in this position (see picture Feel Left). Rotate your arm so that your palm faces forward. This is external rotation of the arm, the Pec Major is lengthened in this position (see picture Feel Right). With your hand still over your Pec Major, internally and externally rotate your arm and ask yourself the following questions: Can you feel Pec Major contract as you medially rotate your arm and lengthen as you externally rotate your arm? Did you feel awareness/movement through your Pec Majors or were there some areas where there was little awareness/movement? Take note of those areas as they will be important for Play. *if you have rounded shoulders you may feel little contraction. PLAY 1. In standing position replace your hand with a smooth massage ball or a spikey ball depending on your comfort level. 2.Take your time & SLOWLY meet the pressure of the ball, allowing it to sink into your Pec Major. 3. Once you have met the pressure of the ball simply internally (picture Play Left) & externally rotate your arm (picture Play Right) and repeat or you can simply meet the pressure of the ball. 4. Play with your desired movement SLOWLY and until you feel a sense of ease in the area of focus or have completed your desired amount of movements. 5. Remove the ball and place your hand back on areas where you felt there was a lack of awareness/movement before. Do you notice a difference as you medially rotate your arm? Is there more awareness/movement than before? Do you feel a sense freedom as you externally rotate your arm? Do your shoulders feel more open? For those with rounded shoulders is there a reduction? If not, remember the Latissimus Dorsi post and the relationship between the Pectoralis major? It may be worthwhile to go back and play with the movements in that post and reevaluate. Let me know how you go in the comments below or if you have any questions. I look forward to sharing more next Monday! Lewis.

03.01.2022 Hi, We are pleased to say we will be reopening on Friday 1st May; however it will be a restricted practice and limiting our sessions as well as 30-minute breaks... after each client session to clean and sanitise our working and common areas. These sessions are particularly for clients who are struggling at the moment and in pain, we have had lots of messages. We want to be able to offer some relief at the same time as adhering to all guidelines from our association and the WA state government. Sadly you will have to wait a little bit longer for Ash due to family commitments, and she will be back with us as soon as she can. Thank you for your support, and we look forward to welcoming you back into our clinic. Julie

02.01.2022 Ease & Springiness in the standing body Lewis is having great success with his current case studies for the structural bodywork 3-series. But what is the structural bodywork 3-series? ... The 3 session series is a powerful and immersive form of hands on fascial treatment which works towards bringing postural awareness, balance and in ease in both standing and in movement. The 3-series has a clear beginning, middle and end. The first session focuses on the lower body. The second session focuses on the upper body. The third session focuses on the spine and unifying the previous sessions to integrate the body as a connected whole. Common client responses include ease in the standing body, effortless movement, postural awareness, decreased pain, feeling lighter, taller and more comfortable in their own bodies at the end of the series. The 3-series isnt looking for perfect posture but for ease and strain free alignment and movement. In the pictured case above, support and body wide ease were achieved from the feet up, as well as softened knees, allowing for spring like movement a great compliment to the clients active lifestyle. Lewis is currently offering the 3-series at a special package price, if you feel this treatment may be for you please comment below and Lewis will be in contact.
