19.01.2022 Humour often plays a major part of Art Klub and these two pieces by Micke and Stella are prime examples! Micke’s iconic flourish depicting Harriet’s bending pose was a response to the Robert Fripp song that featured a primal scream vocal. Stella heard a swan come up in conversation and it helped finish a sketch. A new painterly direction by Missy has to be mentioned along with the lovely elegance of Elle, Alisa, experiment in paper stock by Vanessa and an older work by Charl...ie D I just had to put on display! 14.01.2022 My work this week in Art Klub owes a lot to a suggestion by workmate Charles Taperell who suggested to the group we all render our work using both hands. For me hair suddenly became easier to capture. 13.01.2022 Lake Mungo in far western NSW. Straight after the gathering of family for Pips and Patrick’s big day, Diana and so took trip to this magical location. These are the stark lunettes at sunset of the local geographic feature called the Great Walls of China.

12.01.2022 This was my favourite sketch of the trip. What a building! So much history in terms of modern Australia, in terms of science, in terms of trying to capture such a detailed bloody structure! In the end I found I was ‘painting’ in line. 11.01.2022 Hospital is no fun at anytime but for my 91 year old mother-in-law Margaret Clarke it was a time to show your ticker and your good humour! I was fortunate enough to be Marg’s primary contact at the Coffs Harbour Base Hospital last weekend as she worked her way to recovery from some breathing difficulties. Apart from being a perfect human ‘still life’ for some portraiture, she showed me what strength of character and grace under fire is all about. 11.01.2022 Lake Cargelligo, western NSW. Returned to Sydney via this lovely town. I had always wanted to visit this place because an old friend had lived out here for years but it wasn’t til Covid came along I ventured back to country NSW. Absolutely gorgeous town. Along with the lake the Mushroom Silo is another unique part of the town.... Shots also include an amazing dead tree near a local marshland we visited looking for bird life. 11.01.2022 Lake Mungo sunset tour sketches continued. More eroded sand dune ‘lunettes’, pictures of Diana with our friends Annie and Phil who met up with us at Lake Mungo, and the sunset from the dune crest. I was always lagging behind the tour furiously sketching these quick impressions. 10.01.2022 Art Klub contributions by guests and work mates from this week’s oftentimes breakthrough session. David took a pivotal move away from inkline to explore tonal effects using charcoal and pastel. Smashed it! Stella took up the left hand/ right hand exercise using two distinct colours that showed she may be a latent ‘leftie’ (handedness not politics!) A great page of drawings! Rachel showed the floor can be your drawing board. Gravity seemed to help her lay down strong primal st...atements onto her cardboard sheets. The brevity/simplicity she has been exploring in her sketches lately seems to have distilled down into a instinctual styling we’ve dubbed ‘The Mackay’. Dan explored sublime. Guest Charles Williams showed the drama and menace an aggressive pencil sketch can exude as he transported our model Vanessa onto the set of ‘The Ring’. 07.01.2022 A week now since my youngest daughter Peita Blythe married the awesome Patrick Cooney after a ten year relationship of travelling and growing together. A proud moment for Diana and I and Pat’s fabulous parents Heather and Paul. Unconventional and intimate the whole day was a study in perfection!!

06.01.2022 Pastel on paper. Art Klub this week was energised for me with a large roll of red photographers paper coming my way courtesy of a work colleague. (Thanks Rachel!!) It’s all about Red and Blue with the crucial election in the USA at the moment but these two contrasting colours can coexist I’m happy to report! Our studio life class this week was the most popular session we’ve had so far and was another great night of seeing beginners creating some great work and regulars reall...y pushing their boundaries.
