25.01.2022 When you need to have a concealed beam, universal column (UC) sections comes in handy. They are squarish and a lot heavier by the meter length, but the relatively shorter depth means they can fit in within slab thickness of 3c (257mm).

25.01.2022 Simple electromagnetic detection, as oppose to seismic, to map out the alignment and depth of existing underground services before the dig. In this case, it was the pre-works prep for domestic gas pipe installation by horizontal drill.

24.01.2022 Sewerage are very corrosive to the structure that are built to channel it from the households to the pumping station and on to the sewerage treatment plants. Concrete and masonry structure are usually formed with cement based material such as concrete or mortar in bedding joints, and are attacked by the sewer in these systems. Inert lining such as plastic have been used to improve the life of these structures.

24.01.2022 Whatever happened to the structural mantra of designing for robustness? 58 storey tower on sand, in an active earthquake zone....

24.01.2022 70mm thick light weight concrete precast planks used as flooring material where for those who prefer the solidness and feel of cast insitu slab without the weight. It is also superior in reducing sound transmission.

23.01.2022 Trenchless technology, directional microtunneling.

22.01.2022 Using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) set specifically for concrete elements, the location of steel bars can be detected. However, this simplified device does not provide information about the diameter of the steel bar or the thickness of the concrete in this situation. In this situation, determining the bar diameter requires a little bit of elbow grease. In this video, the intersecting bars were located so that we can cut out to reach the bar and then chiselled out to physic...ally measure the bar diameter. Then, the cut out would be patch repaired. However, it was not sensitive enough to detect the thickness of concrete in this situation. The separation of reflected waves in different materials (ie. concrete and soil) density does not show up significantly. However, if the slab is suspended and the interface is with air, the thickness can be approximated.

22.01.2022 Transportables are common and allowed temporary space for classroom, store or site office.

22.01.2022 Existing single storey house on sloping ground inspected for suitability for an upper floor addition and two storey extension to the lower rear of block.

21.01.2022 A developer had initially pushed for a bubble deck plank system for this three storey 12 unit multiple development. However, the supplier withdrew and without changing the plans significantly, a similar precast biscuit (used as form) plank was adopted with the void formed using polystrene blocks (to remove the some of the concrete weight. The savings were achieve in reducing concrete (about $20000 in this case) and lighter foundations. However, the polystyrene blocks cost $8500, workers unfamiliar with the system made a mess with the services layout. The addtions daywork incurred to cut the polystyrene blocks to suit and addition cost of using expanding foam to fill gaps left by the pipeworks (in order to minimise additional weight of concrete) in the end negated any savings.

21.01.2022 Kerbside multi function poles, whether for lights, traffic signals or CCTV, are often mounted on concrete cubes, pad footings or augered pile foundation. However in locations where there are multiple underground services laid haphazardly and criss crossing the city pavements, installing new poles canbe very challenging. Locating these underground services, then meticulously excavating the ground to minimise distrupting any live services takes a lot of patience. After the trench has been exposed, finding multiple live and susposedly dead services in teh way of the new build can be frustrating. That's where steel needle foundation comes into the picture. As many of these location requires the excavation to be exposed only for short after hours, the site works needs to be kept to a minimum.

19.01.2022 When you are planning to modify your internal space, possibly knocking a wall or two out, check that these walls are not supporting the roof struts.

19.01.2022 Looking for something different for your feature stairs in wood feel?

18.01.2022 Installation of 80mm diameter HDPE pipe for fire hydrant on development site across the road. Directional drilling machine jack segments of steel rods into soil and pit excavated on other side of the road to receive. Drilling mud assist in loosening the soil and ease the rod through the ground. On reaching the pit at the other end, the one end of the reel of pipe was hooked to the rod header and was pulled back across. All done within half a working day, no need to make good, no cave in, nor major diversion of traffic.

18.01.2022 For installation of relatively large structures underground, sometimes it's not feasible to adopt caisson or braced wall excavation nor would it be practical to construct by insitu concrete pour. In this case, components were planned as precast concrete segments to be lifted into place.

18.01.2022 Precast concrete blocks arched tunnel.

16.01.2022 Jumping jack in trenching.

14.01.2022 This old single storey house had vertical cracks near one corner of the internal room wall with a couple of diagonal cracks. The surrounding area is clay ground. The underlaying problem was only identified after the floor boards were stripped and plaster boards removed. The single leaf internal brick have cut outs for the floor bearers but there were timber (jarrah) floor plates on which the wall was built. It was presumed that the plate was placed to provide a level surface ...on which the bearers rest. This does not appear to be a licensed builder's work, even 80 to 100 years ago before the licensing came into existence. It was generally expected that the builders of the past were conservative and would have been conscious about stacking stiff material on relatively compressible organic material, but certainly not in this case. Expensive fix.

13.01.2022 Reconstituted limestone gravity wall about 2m high at this section, failed as there was not enough weight / block behind it to resist the surcharge on it. Often retaining walls were built by the developer and the subdivided land sold to individual to build. The Australian Building Code of Practice and Australian Standard require these boundary walls to be designed appropriately for the intended loads, which varies from 2.5kPa to 5 kPa surcharge or more as assessed by the engi...neer. In this case, it was observed that the wall build up was suitable for no surcharge load only, while two storey residences were built as close as 1m to 1.5m to the wall face. The signs of failure was obvious with a vertical crack straight across the mortar and block about 1.5m from the corner. The subtle wedged shaped vertical crack and a couple of other diagonal cracks behind it points to a rotational yielding, while the full vertical crack is a sign of sliding too.

13.01.2022 This started life close to a hundred years ago as a textile warehouse. It had only a mezzanine floor then. Now, besides the ground floor entry and garage, it has three floors of residential space. It experience life as a alcohol storage warehouse prior to this conversion.

13.01.2022 Two storey multi units development in brick veneer for lower floor and timber stud wall framing upper floor and concrete upper slab on steel truss joists.

13.01.2022 This will pave the way for the light weight timber framing Class 2, 3 and 5 building construction. Time as well as potential cost savings anticipated. https://sourceable.net/timber-buildings-rise-higher-follow/#

13.01.2022 Tamala Limestone can be found between Shark Bay to Albany on the west coast of Australia. It is a sedimentary rock in which wind-blown shell fragments and quartz sand accumulated as coastal dune sand throught the process of sedimentation and percolation of water, and the mixture lithified when the lime content dissolves to cement the grains together. Together they come, and in similar ways they can be broken apart, in time.

12.01.2022 Coring through reconstituted limestone wall to install screen fence wall posts

11.01.2022 Although pricing is not that attractive, this could be the quick pop-up house in rather isolated blocks for the off-grid minded.

10.01.2022 Similar to timber stud walls for residential, these prefabricated and insulated panels are pciking up in popularity in Western Australia, in substituting brick construction. One manufacturer in Perth fabricate it using two sheets of Oriented Strand Boards (OSB), which is similar to plywood with all parts of the tree utilised in the making of these boards, sandwiching a polystyrene block. At the edges timber studs, top and bottom tracks are added to join the panels together with nails. These panels can be used for roof, walls and flooring. As they are only the framing panels, finishing material such as roof sheeting, ceiling boards, wall plasterboards, external wall cladding and floor finishes will be fixed to them later.

10.01.2022 Morooka MST 800E was originally a dumper tip on rubber tracks. The dumper body was removed to fit a pair of front and rear pipe cradles and and mid-body flatbed tray.

05.01.2022 There was a request for an inspection of cracks in the unit of a block of apartments. Fixing the cracks is one thing, finding the cause is not always as straight forward. Looking at the bigger picture was necessary. The settlement and cracks in the bituminous driveway pavement, suggests soil loss and movement. Looking over the other side of the fence, it was a limestone retaining wall which appears to have rotated. The screen wall above accentuated the effect of the bow. The failure of a retaining wall is not having a collapsed wall, but the wall having moved significantly that it affects the surrounding. In this case, the foundation of the building adjacent to it have settled resulting in the diagonal differential settlement cracks observed.

04.01.2022 Site lift and installation of concrete tilt panels into temporary braced position. Use of multiple pulleys to lift panels off and then tilt up vertically, swing into place, shim and lock down...before temporary brace installed.

02.01.2022 Vacuum excavation.

02.01.2022 Insulation for wall in upper floor timber stud framed house. In addition to the rockwool which is placed withing the timber stud frames, this house had a 75mm thick polystrene block screwed onto the outside of the timber stud frame for addition insulation. It is then finished with skim coat before textured paint is applied over it.

02.01.2022 Perth Sand Penetrometer, use only for Perth sandy ground to approximate soil density or made ground/sand pad compaction density. Sometimes known as the Dynamic Cone Penetrometer. It consist of a 9kg hammer on a sliding rod. The hammer is lifted to a predetermined height and allow to drop in free fall. After the first 150mm is hammered into the ground to seat the rod, the number of blow counts for each 300mm penetration into the ground is recorded as a guide to the density of ...the ground. Perth coast strip is predominantly Tamala limestone bedrock and the weathering of these "softer" rock result in creamy white to light grey sand of calcareous aeolianite, which suggest deposition as coastal dunes. Over the central Perth region, Bassendean sand, pale grey to white, fine to coarse sand particles, sub-rounded to rounded quartz. Near the water table in this area, there is usually a layer colloquially known as coffee rock, friable, limonite-cemented sand . Other types of sandy soil are Beecher Sand and Safety Bay Sand.

01.01.2022 Restumping timber flooring.

01.01.2022 Bendable concrete in the making. However, restricted applications for slab on grade in road paving or similar only where the flexible and crack resistant property is advantegeous, not to mention improved skid resistance. https://www.engineersaustralia.org.au//bendable-concrete-d
