20.01.2022 MINDFUL MONDAY FIND YOUR POTENTIAL FACT: Everyone feels fear. You would have heard of the flight / fight response. As humans this response, just happens auto...matically, it has been an important part of our evolution & keeps us safe in dangerous situations when needed. FACT: Fear can be paralysing. Many of our fears can be linked back to our earlier years as children or from situations that were traumatic. We were not born to be fearful, but have developed habitual habits as a way of protection from these past traumas / situations. Overtime we become shrouded in our bubble of fear, comfortable in our fear, it is familiar to us, almost like a friend, without us knowing, it seeps into every cell of our body, changing our thoughts, effecting us both mentally & physically, causing negative feelings, depression, anxiety & in extreme cases the most devastating suicidal thoughts. Basically suffocating our potential, mindset & ability to function. A bit like locking a beautiful blooming flower in a jar, eventually it will lose its colour, drop leaves & struggle to survive. ASK YOURSELF WHY WOULD I WANT TO STEP OUT OF MY BUBBLE ~ MY COMFORT ZONE? What would it be like to let go? Be free? How could I overcome my fear? ANSWER: You could do anything you wanted to do or be anything you wanted to be. BE FREE FACT: When you were a child learning to walk, you took each step & you fell down, determined to get back up. Your parents were delighted they praised you & inside you felt good. If you did not try, fall down & get back up again, how would you ever walk, run & do all of those things that kids do THE GOOD NEWS Of course you can be free of your limiting fear. The only thing holding you back is YOU We manifest our fears & then are unable to control them, like a learner driver on their first ever drive, expected to navigate out on the highway of life without a GPS I HAVE AN EXERCISE FOR YOU TO TRY This exercise can be used for lots of situations where fear is holding you back from moving forward & reaching your potential. We have been using these techniques in our professional clinical practice for 15yrs & our clients have had fantastic results Pick a small fear first, if you do not want to be alone doing this exercise ask a family member or a friend to be with you. At anytime if you feel you want to stop, halt & try again later Remember baby steps, one bite at a time. If you feel your fear is rising & taking over just go back to the previous step until the fear symptoms lessen then start again. EXERCISE On a sheet of paper, phone, iPad or computer write down this method as you go. RECIPE LETTING GO OF FEAR .............. You write down the name of your fear. BELOW is an example RECIPE I have used many times before. You can change up the fear for your own, add the ingredients needed & the method you will use. EXAMPLE LETTING GO OF FEAR ............ MY FEAR was Crossing the Sydney Harbour Bridge INGREDIENTS Myself My friend / family member as a support Opal Card Bag packed ready for the next day Alarm set with time to get up Train into Town Hall change for Circular Quay Shower Clothing set out ready for the next day Drive car to station pick up friend along the way Breakfast Running shoes Coffee Chewing gum METHOD 1. Set alarm for 6.30am 2. Shower & get changed into clothing 3. Have breakfast 4. Drive to friends place & pick her up 5. Drive to train station at Sutherland 6. Catching train into Town Hall then change trains for Circular Quay 7. Arrive at Circular Quay with friend 8. Drink coffee & relax in cafe 9. Walk along Cahill Expressway to the start of the Harbour Bridge 10. Chew gum, to focus my thoughts when I feel panicked & stop my mouth getting dry. 11. Slowly do breathing in through the nose then slowly out mouth, repeat 10 times to control my panic 12. Have my friend stand between myself & the outside railing of the Bridge 13. Scale my fear out of 10 before I start ( Zero is nothing Ten is extreme ) 14. Ask friend to talk to me the whole time I am crossing the bridge. 15. Myself & my friend commence a jog across the bridge 16 . Look at the cars driving not the edge of the bridge 17. Run the whole way across 18. Stop on the north side, do breathing to control panic & do a scale out of 10 19. Commence the run back repeating exactly as before COMMENTS On my run across the first time my legs were numb & the panic was ready to scream out of my throat. Out of 10, my panic was 15. I was dizzy & hyperventilating, as I ran across the bridge, I had to stop myself from thinking of how high it was & that nothing was below it. Once I made Milsons Point all those symptoms went away. When I thought about crossing the bridge I felt still panic but I also felt more relaxed. On my return run my panic level was 8, I wasn’t as dry in my throat & I had more control of my thoughts as I crossed it. Once we reached the other side we high fived each other. When I thought about crossing the bridge I felt uneasy but not panicked anymore. I could not look over the side at all. I had tried 8 previous times to walk across the bridge, most of them standing on the path in a crumbling mess sobbing in fear, I would even panic in a car & train. It took me 10yrs to do it. I missed out on many wonderful opportunities & experiences because of my fear. RESULT I have crossed that bridge more than 20 times walking it, I can stand on the edge & take photos no problem. Sometimes it makes me a little uneasy on a scale of 3 / 10 & sometimes I feel nothing. I am so proud of myself for taking that little nibble / baby step Overcoming this challenge has led me to climb volcanoes, stand on the edge of cliffs & cross many other bridges. I definitely am in control of heights. Like a muscle, every time I am near new heights I am stronger & stronger. LET GO OF YOUR FEAR If you need a helping hand along the way.
