23.01.2022 In October 2017 a weekend of birding tours were held in the Rankins Springs Area. Tours were lead by members of the LFWAG group and togteher with the participants of the tours held across 2 days in the early morning and early evening they sighted 120 different types of birds. A Bird Sighting list from that weekend is now available to downlioad on the LFWAG website. https://docs.wixstatic.com//a99a32_d9b797a3226f4d60b417c22
23.01.2022 LFWAG sadly announce the passing of one of the groups founding and most active members, Helen Dwyer. Helen (H) wife of Mark, passed away Tuesday 8th October. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday 23rd October at the Rankins Springs Lawn Cemetery, Lake Cargelligo Rd. Rankins Springs at 11am. ... Following the service a wake will be held at the Rankins Springs Memorial hall. This is just an advisory notice because we have been a bit preoccupied over recent weeks. We are very aware that many people who attended the LFWAG bird count and birding tours may be unaware of her illness or passing. After the October birding tours held recently a number of people who are regulars in the tours dropped in to say hello to H and Mark. I know the surprise visit bolstered them both, when things looked so bleak. H was the key person behind the website and also managed the birding tour bookings and coordination, and was still taking bookings from her hospital bed and doing updates to the website. Our community is much poorer with her passing. Griffith Regional Funeral Services are supporting the family at the service and their Facebook page will have any other information .
22.01.2022 THE BIRDING TOURS PLANNED FOR NEXT WEEKEND ARE ALL BOOKED OUT. THANK YOU EVERYONE WHO IS COMING ALONG.
19.01.2022 Are you keen to help monitor the well being of our local bird life? Join LFWAG in the upcoming Annual Bird Count . Register by Feb 10th for the event that takes place on 16/17 Feb https://www.lfwag.org.au/upcoming-events
17.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who rocked up to Rankins Springs for the Annual Bird Count. We had over 70 individuals come along and spend time at the designated waterholes and sit quietly and wait for the birds to drop in for their evening drink. Without actually giving the exact number of Glossy Black Cockatoos counted I can let you know it’s the highest number we have sighted so far, remarkable considering that well known nesting sites have been damaged by those who care little for the natural environment.
15.01.2022 Dont forget its Bird Watching Tours at Rankins Springs this weekend with the crew from LFWAG.
14.01.2022 Early morning and late in the afternoon is certainly a symphony of immense proportions with birds all joining in to add their voice to the call to dawn . Walking through the hills and bushland in the LFWAG area brings so many delights. Radio National had a story this week on Birds and their Songs. http://radio.abc.net.au/search
14.01.2022 Here are a few more photos of the resident Tawny Frogmouth family - this is dad and offspring. Plus another very bright young visitor.
14.01.2022 Hello friends of Lachlan Fold Wildlife Action Group, we hope that you are all well and coping with the current COVID-19 pandemic and the requirements to limit infection. It will be a testing time over the coming months as humans get a taste of what it’s like to be a caged animal at the zoo, the only difference is no parade of people to yell, laugh, spit, annoy, throw food at and imitate you walking past. We hope you get the opportunity to step out of your confines each day and spend time enjoying nature and what is increasingly a much quieter world. Stay safe, stay informed and be kind

08.01.2022 Here is a great account of one of visitors to the 2017 Birding Tours weekend and how they found the experience. https://www.lfwag.org.au//12/BUS-BIRDING-AT-RANKINS-SPRINGS
03.01.2022 Well that’s another Lachlan Fold Wildlife Action Group bird tours under the belt. Thank you to our hard working volunteers who acted as guides, bus drivers, cooks and caterers. And the. The domestic crew to clean up the mess. Not forgetting our tour guests, some who return every year, thank you. Big excitement was the number Glossy Black cockatoos who decided to show there presence, usually very elusive birds, they gathered in their family groups and made a real show of them...selves. In fact many birds were sighted and this is most likely an effect of the extended drought and the McPherson ranges are still largely untouched by its ravages and birds no doubt are very happy to discover the oasis that the hills around Rankins Springs are. Or maybe they read H’s very stern email to all birds in the district about this not being a year that they can hide, but one where we needed the best displays. Thank you to those regular birders who have become good friends with LFWAG team who took the time out to travel into griffith and call in on Helen and Mark. The were very touched by this gesture, it says a lot about the connections we make with people in shared experiences, while the humans appear to become more insular and self centred in this new millennium , it’s a simple and heart felt gesture like that visit that gives us hope that we haven’t lost the memory of how these little things make community visible and actually have meaning.
03.01.2022 Earlier this year we shared a photo of two Tawny Frogmouths who had taken up residence in the box tree above the woodpile, and now we have a third, with an offspring nestled beside one the parents.

01.01.2022 Helen, one of FLWAG board members and organisers, had a rather interesting experience the other day while working in her garden. Summer at the farm and especially in the vegetable gardens, most often means snakes, and the most common are the venomous kind, such as the Eastern Brown and the Copperhead. Our dogs can testify to how the snakes can be dangerous when cornered. So we are always alert when working in the garden, but a little stumped wen se came across this snak...e eating a bull frog, because while it looked like an eastern brown, it was also a little different. She had in fact witnessed the Yellow-faced Whip Snake which it seems is a rather elusive character and rarely observed. She snapped a large number of photos as the visitor devoured the bull frog. These snakes are a slender and fast-moving, active during the day. It is common throughout most of Australia. It is often confused with the Eastern Brown Snake, and it is hard to observe closely, being alert and fleeing quickly when disturbed The Yellow-faced Whip Snake feeds mainly on small diurnal lizards, as well as frogs and lizard eggs. They have good eyesight, and can chase and capture lizards on the run. The Yellow-faced Whip Snake is a venomous snake, but is not considered dangerous. However, a bite could be extremely painful, with much local swelling. Details are from the Australian Museum.
