19.01.2022 Services that support seniors to overcome social isolation are critical. For many older LGBTI people, being unable to access culturally safe supports increases the impact of coronvirus isolation. Many LGBTI older people have no connection with biological family and/or communities of origin. Most have lived a large part of their lives where concealment of their identities was the only protection from stigma and discrimination. Some have limited mobility, live with chronic illn...ess, disability or dementia, or are fearful of accessing services they need. Now more than ever, the friendships forged between older Australians and their volunteer visitors is helping older Australians through the COVID-19 pandemic. To connect with older Australians and find out more about the community visitor scheme, including auspice organisations like Switchboard Victoria (Out & About) and the Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre, go to www.abc.net.au/agelessfriendships
