21.01.2022 A beautiful Friday night sunset over the Indian Ocean welcomed guests last week to the LO-GO Appointments book launch of "Servants of Australian Communities". C...elebrating 25 years of LO-GO Appointments, the book recounts unique stories, challenges, and rewards of local government employees, told by people from across the sector. Shining a light on communities around the nation, many wrote of their good fortune in seeing parts of the country that most Australians do not. Helen Passmore, Executive Director, LO-GO Appointments, was joined by Editor Ken Spillman and guests from all over Western Australia who have been involved in Local Government from as far north as Meekatharra to the South West. It was a wonderful night with many laughs and even an entertaining guitar solo by the talented John Read. The staff from LO-GO Appointments paid a lovely tribute to Helen and all her successes over the last 25 years. Special thanks to Steve Tweedie for being the MC, and Paul Omodei for officially launching the book. Well done Helen on a wonderful achievement of 25 years of service!!

19.01.2022 BENCUBBIN, WA Never having been a great lover of crowds, I don't understand why people congregate along the coast of WA in such great hordes. Each to their own ...I guess, but give me wide open places and as few people as possible any day. Bencubbin is about 3 hours east of Perth WA in the wheatbelt area. The scenery is stunning and history is alive out there with all the old buildings and ruins to explore. There are literally hundreds of old towns dotted around the wheatbelt and at first glance they might not look like much, but if you do your homework before you go and try to tap into some local knowledge, there are heaps of cool things to check out. A quick Google search will provide lots of useful information. Between the Shire and local or regional tourism websites you will find plenty of interesting things to see and do. These pictures were taken around Marshall Rock, Lake McDermott and the old Pergandes homestead and sheep yards (More to come about the sheep yards in a future post) just east of Bencubbin. The date on the photos says it was July, but that didn't stop us rugging up and having a great time in between the showers. 10.01.2022 Together with Friends of ANZAC Cottage and City of Vincent, we saved two unique bus shelters in Mount Hawthorn. These two unique shelters were built as part of... an initiative by Friends of ANZAC Cottage to commemorate World War I and the Vietnam War, made from common elements during these times including timber, corrugated iron and sandbags. We knew what they meant to the local community, so when it was time to upgrade them as part of the Bus Stop Accessibility Works Program we wanted to keep their spirit alive. Rather than replacing them with new ones, the old bus shelters were carefully removed and re-installed in their original place. You can still see them today, standing proudly on Kalgoorlie Street and ANZAC Road.

05.01.2022 Birak - Red (mirda) symbolises heat, sun and fire (December/January) Birak season sees the rains ease up and the warm weather really start to take hold. The ...afternoons are cooled by the sea breezes that abound from the southwest. Traditionally this was the fire season, a time to burn the country in mosaic patterns. An almost clockwork style of easterly winds in the morning and sea breezes in the afternoon, meant that this was the burning time of year for Nyoongar people. The country would be burnt in mosaic patterns for several reasons including; fuel reduction, increasing the grazing pastures for some animals, to aid in seed germination for some plants and for ease of mobility across the country. As for the animals, there are many fledglings now venturing out of nests, though some are still staying close to their parents. Reptiles are looking to shed their old skin for a new one and with the rising temperatures and the decreasing rainfall, it's also time for the baby frogs to complete their transformation into adulthood.

03.01.2022 Have you ever heard of, been to or lived in Gnowangerup? Your State Library is featuring WA regional towns on its Facebook Page. It's an opportunity to share s...tories, old photos and connect with old friends. Recently featured Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Busselton, Mandurah, Wittenoom, Kalgoorlie and Rockingham... Gnowangerup is located 355 south east of Perth in the Great Southern. The name means "place where the mallee hen nests" in the language of the area's traditional owners the Goreng Noongar people, who have been in the region for thousands of years. The town was first gazetted in 1908 spelt Ngowangerupp. However it was unpopular among new European settlers and was changed to Gnowangerup a few years later. The Gnowangerup State School opened in November 1908 and the local Agricultural Hall shortly after. A branch railway from Tambellup opened for service to Gnowangerup in 1912 and was extended to Ongerup on 6 January 1913. People came to the Gnowangerup Agricultural Show from far and wide. In 1926 United Aborigines Missionary Brother HW Wright and Sister Hope Wright established an Aboriginal reserve on the outskirts of town. This included a hall, hospital tent and a small school in an area of land granted to them by the State Government. Men received assistance in finding work while women found domestic work in the town. In 1928 the population of the reserve grew dramatically from 100 in 1928 to over 300 people with the closure of the Carrolup Native Settlement. Subsequently the condition of the reserve deteriorated and it was condemned by the Gnowangerup Board of Health. In 1935 the Wrights arranged for the purchase of 61 hectares of land two miles east of the town along the Black Road. This would become the Gnowangerup Mission. A Bible Training Institute opened in Gnowangerup in 1960, the first of its kind for Aboriginal people in Western Australia. It was here that Ron Williams studied to be a pastor and missionary. Ron Williams went on to become one of the best-known and respected Aboriginal leaders in Australia. He was known among Aboriginal people as Kurta kurta everybodys brother. The State Library has an extensive collection of digitised photographs from the Gnowangerup Bible Training Institute here - https://bit.ly/3m9xueJ. It also has a small industrial area. The wheatbelt town is close to wildflower reserves, the beautiful Stirling Ranges National Park and small local museums. 02.01.2022 Meet Jumbo! This new mural is just off Stirling Terrace. The City of Albany says:... Jumbo the elephant first visited Albany in 1929 as part of the Wirths Circus. Following some artistic differences with the circus director, Jumbo had had enough! He rampaged up Stirling Terrace and down the laneway of the George Hotel, taking out one of the support beams at the front of the pub!! We hope you enjoy meeting Jumbo. You can find him in the laneway between Dylans On The Terrace and The White Star Hotel Albany. A big thank you to the talented artist Cody Hulkes, sadc_theclown, for bringing Jumbo to life for us!
