25.01.2022 INVENTING THE GLAMOUR PORTRAIT Did you know they already retouched photos before Photoshop? As written by Mark A. Vieira in one of his many books about the gre...at George Hurrell: "This [first picture] is a print made from an unretouched George Hurrell negative of Joan Crawford made in 1931 for Harry Beaumont's 'Laughing Sinners'. As was customary with a Hurrell sitting, she was wearing eye makeup and lipstick but no base. The commercial lens that Hurrell had recently adopted was unsparing in its clarity; there was no softness to disguise sun damage or freckles. This [second picture] is a print made from the same negative after the retouch artist James Sharp spent six hours applying pencil lead to its emulsion. This is why Golden Era movie stars looked impossibly beautiful." See more
