25.01.2022 Figure and Rainbow in the Outback, Sidney Nolan (1917-1992), 90x121cm, enamel on board. Currently featured in our Spring Collectors Show Nolan was fond of quoting his humble origins, my father was a tram driver, and found work wherever he could. He fell in with the Boyds, and with the aegis of the Angry Penguins, escaped the worst of the Second World War. After the success of the Ned Kelly series, Nolan was fortunate in that he not only achieved international acclai...m, but found a willing patron in Lord McAlpine. He had the twin dynamics of a successful art career, cashflow and patronage. Nolans outback landscapes, such as the one pictured, began an exploration of story-telling that is intrinsically tied to an anthemic sense of ourselves. His skill was to re-invent iconic images such as the Kelly mythology, as something new. Through a different eye, Nolan gave us, in as much as the Heidelberg school presented the bush, a dynamic, super-charged distillation of our essential parts. Nolan encapsulated that other which blends expressionism with surrealism, and a controlled abstractionist delight in light, colour and form. We still live in the shadow of Nolan today. . #sidneynolan #australianartists #artcollectors #libbyedwardsgalleries #australianlandscape @ Libby Edwards Galleries

24.01.2022 New Arrivals: divine Montana Kitching miniature oil paintings in the gallery Montana is an emerging Melbourne artist with an irreverent, humorous and fun portrayal of puberty, gender issues, and awkward moments bravely faced. She focuses on the thoughts, feelings and insecurities that many women and people experience daily. Through paintings and illustrations, Montana opens conversation about topics which are often romanticised instead of taken seriously, and those that... are for some reason, considered to be taboo. By drawing from personal experience, Montanas illustrations are raw, honest and relatable, and aim to provide people with safety, reassurance and an opportunity to engage dialogue, without judgment. 21.01.2022 Its a balancing act! Pictured, gallery mascot @humphreythepomeranian holding up Back I, lithograph, by Brett Whiteley. More Whiteley works including Preliminary drawing for Magnolia with Money, work on paper, 76x55cm, pictured, for our forthcoming Collectors show, visit our website for more information. www.libbyedwardsgalleries.com The most fundamental reason one paints, is in order to see (Brett Whiteley) Whiteley quotes are like bits of stardust, plucked from t...he ether. They sparkle still with the wisdom born by intense observation and an enthusiasm tempered by world weariness. In an instant, he achieved a legendary status for eschewing the conventional hagiography of Australian art. Whiteley was an outsider, an insider, and the complete enigmatic Modernist. He possessed a directors touch for understatement, and a composers gift for converting line into poetic lyricism. Not a curve nor line is wasted, in Whiteleys nude series from the 1980s. . 20.01.2022 CHRISTOPHER LEES | UNDISCOVERY | Australian Landscapes 11 - 27 October | Celebrating the Artists 20th anniversary exhibition with us... Lees highly-coveted contemporary landscape paintings, yet again capture the spiritual essence of the Australian Outbacks forms; outcrops, boulders, hillsides, inlets and valleys. Painted with a fluidity and mastery of technique, Lees paintings radiate outwards in their luminosity. His paintbrush transforms ordinary objects into surrealis...t icons, taking the viewer by surprise, in a surrealist twist on reality. The water reflections and expansive skies are deeply contemplative, and painted with a delicious sense of tonal colour, and poetry of space. Water is of endless fascination to Lees, often captured in dreamily reflective colours of green, blue and bronze. His paintings possess a vivid, yet ambiguous depth of transparency, the compositions differentiating, so poetically, the terrestrial from the aqueous, and the delicate tracery of stones and objects is reflected back to us, in stunning outline and exquisite sculptural detail. . 19.01.2022 Pictured: Christopher Lees in his studio, artworks from his current show | UNDISCOVERY |Australian Landscapes | until 27 October, view exhibition at 163A Williams Road, South Yarra | ph: 03 9826 1043 | The artist reflects on his artistic vision: The Australian landscape is an enigma of natures imagination. I try to illustrate this concept in my paintings. In my canvasses no picturesque European gardens or manicured lawns are in evidence, but gnarly, craggy, primeval es...carpments that plummet into the abyss. The landforms are not easily accessible, viewed only by floating on the deep black liquid with no floor, or birdlike, hovering over this strange land in a dreamlike trance. There are no sounds, no winds or signs of life, but fragments of familiar motifs such as boulders, trees and occasionally fence lines that suggest enigmatic past habitations. I try to represent the Australian bush with emotions that cant be written down. #christopherlees #libbyedwardsgalleries #contemporaryart #australianlandscapes #painting #australianart #surrealism See more

The ubiquitous black & white stripe has historically been a symbol of rebellion? Stripes on garments first appeared in the medieval times on prisoners, criminals, clowns, prostitutes, hangmen, etc. By the end of the 19th century, a new... definition of stripes was created by Queen Victoria when she dressed her son in a sailor’s suit. Later, Coco Chanel was inspired by the workers’ uniform during her trip to the French Riviera, so she incorporated stripes into her designs. |||||||||||||||||||||||||| ====================== ||||||||||||||||||||||||| |||| |||| |||| ||| #waydeowen #stripes #stripedpainting #blackandwhiteart #wikipedia #hawksburnvillage See more

13.01.2022 Our Spring Collectors Show is ready to open! Visit us tomorrow 12-3pm, or Wed & Thurs 11-5pm this week. Sidney Nolan is amongst many collectible and notable mid century artists. Pictured, are two breathtaking examples: Leda and the Swan, rippolin on board, and figure and Rainbow in Outback, enamel on board. Nolans competency, his fluidity, his encapsulation of that other which blends expressionism with surrealism, and a controlled abstractionist delight in li...ght, colour and form, established an epoch. We still live in the shadow of Nolan today. And the reason why, is telling, he broke the bounds of formalism and academicism. : : #libbyedwardsgalleries #sidneynolan #artcollecting #australianart #ledaandtheswan See more

12.01.2022 Banana Yellow 1998 by Rosalie Gascoigne, was among one of the last retro-reflective road sign works she composed just before her death in 1999. Gascoigne had stumbled across her first group of road signs near the depot at Collector in New South Wales in the early 1980s and she began to stockpile these brightly coloured signs, gathering them during her regular driving expeditions in search of discarded materials. The finding of these yellow and orange retro-reflective signs,... along side her towering haul of Schweppes boxes from Queanbeyan, was a seminal moment in Gascoignes art. Born in New Zealand to an academic family in 1917, it was not until her fifties, through her significant love of nature, that Gascoigne realised she was an artist. Originally trained in Ikebana to pass the lonely times living on Mount Stromlo near Canberra, her expertise in the gentle art of Japanese flower arrangements was renowned. This discipline and her keen sense of observation quite possibly underpinned the remarkable knack she had in finding beauty in natures off cuts and using the discarded and overlooked to astonishing capacity in her later art. Excerpt from catalogue courtesy of Deutscher Hackett (text by Lara Nicholls). . 12.01.2022 From our Spring Collectors Show Poem for a Lover, by Brett Whiteley, from 1988, is a coloured screenprint: printed in 9 colours, with hand-colouring by the artist in pink metallic paint. (Its an edition 54 of 80). The series was inspired by the artists romantic interlude in Japan. The ill-fated relationship with fellow heroin addict, Janice Spencer, was increasing in velocity around the time he made "Poem for a Lover", and his marriage to Wendy was disintegrating. Whi...teleys artistic recognition had transcended into celebrity status both here and overseas. It contains his trademark sensuous linework, a sexy depiction of the cherry blossom tree. Whiteley wrote of the screen-printing process: The very flatness of screen-printing suited me perfectly, as the shallow picture-plane that I used in oil painting, which had been greatly influenced by Piero and 15th century Italian painting, was exactly the same approach to building up a vision in both cases, skin over skin, using only line, to conjure, or excite, the stillness of colour. The last screen to be used each time in this series was always aimed at a thick, nervous black line that would bring a third space, or irony, to the subject. ... There is one advantage in screen-printing, that the image you draw is the image you get; with etching line cuts, you have to keep in mind the reverse coming out. #brettwhiteley #australianartists #libbyedwardsgalleries #artcollect Second image: Lavender Bay in the Rain, screenprint, edition 30 of 75, 100x74cm Inquiries Phone: 03 9826 1043

08.01.2022 Two more beauties, in the Tasmanian Birds series by Luke Wagner, on their way to the gallery Luke Wagner began as a scientist, and in his paintings theres a lineage that goes from ornithologist John Gould, and beyond, to the realm of the Natural Historian. The French artist who accompanied Nicholas Baudin on his adventure to Tasmania, is close to the heart of this artist. Theres a lineage that goes back to Duttereau. This French artist captured the soul of Tasmania in ...painting the native inhabitants, posessing them with nobility, when other settlers only found degradation. Wagners work is profoundly neo-classical. His eye is steeped in Tasmanian history. These are not just illustrations, but an analytical capturing of the very essence of an owl or eagle, as a distinct individual. Luke has a scientific eye for the heart of his subject, and captures in exquisite detail, the emotional, as well as the sculptural, intensity within. Although Wagner is renowned for his surreal and stylised Tasmanian landscapes, his work often integrates figurative and still life genres. Working intuitively, he re-orders what he has seen and experienced into his own perceptive and thought-provoking visual language. Luke Wagner has won numerous awards and his work continues to grow in popularity. Since his first sell-out exhibition in 1994, Wagner has held over 30 shows and been a finalist in many art prizes. A self-taught painter, he has allowed his individualistic and personal approach to flourish. He continues to explore many themes, and says that his intent is to make meaningful and worthwhile, art that engages the viewer in a poetic and honest way. : : @lukewagner_artist #libbyedwardsgalleries #johngould #birds #tasmanianartist #tasmanianbirds #art #painting

01.01.2022 new John Hart paintings inquiries 03 9826 1043 or [email protected] ~ John Hart is concerned with the complex, often ambivalent intersection between classical painting, photography and digital imaging. Harts process begins with his sculptural paper or fabric assemblages, photographed, then painted, thereby translating 3-dimensional into 2-dimensional. ... With their theatrical lighting, magnified scale and eerie stillness, Harts images betray an overwhelming, almost unnerving sense of drama and strangeness: the longer one focuses upon this fragment of reality the more intense or mysterious the experience becomes. Everyday objects (and more recently figures) that are wrapped in paper or fabric, mask any sense of the familiar. Such works notably transcend the obvious or particular - entering, rather, a metaphysical realm. John Hart graduated from the New York Studio drawing school in 1997 after completing a Visual Art Honours degree at the Adelaide Central School of Art. Hart comes with an artistic family pedigree - his father was the late Australian painter Pro Hart. : : : : #johnhart #photorealism #artoninstagram #libbyedwardsgalleries #contemporarypainting @ Libby Edwards Galleries
