23.01.2022 ~Sharing with permission~ || Agni or Inner Digestive Fire|| As naturopaths, we focus on gut health. ... We do a lot of work around food intolerances, supporting optimal digestion and assimilation of nutrients and all aspects around gastrointestinal health. So why is it so important to support Agni? A recent appointment case had experienced long term gut issues... IBS, diverticulitis, issues with fructose malabsorption and many other gastrointestinal complaints. It got to the point, diet was so limited and there was fear associated with eating certain foods. After initial detective work, we primarily supported the digestive system using herbs specific for dosha and agni. We concentrated on foods that could be eaten, there was no major food restrictions, all of our work was to do with supporting agni. The good news is this work all resulted in a much wider choice of foods (without causing issues), less stress associated with foods and a much happier gastrointestinal system. Agni or inner digestive fire is responsible for conversion of consumed foods into a form of food which can nourish body tissues. When Agni (digestive fire), is weak, instead of converting food into a nourishing bioabsorbable form, it converts food into Ama. Ama is unprocessed, undigested food. Ayurveda believes Ama is often important causes of beginning of almost all illnesses, which ties back to the gut health being so important for our health and wellbeing. Ayurveda offers some very simple methods to support Agni and therefore, overall health.

22.01.2022 I think we all do this, Have done this Will do it Are doing now Do it on and off...... . Getting in the way of ourselves. . For me, with health, I always ask what your goals are and how are you going to get there. It’s so interesting how we can unintentionally get in our own way! . I did an awesome seminar today with @be.the.exceptional.hairdresser, a slightly different industry perspective to Naturopathy, but crosses both professions. If you have a goal...go for it and get out of your own way . . . . See more

20.01.2022 I think most people I have seen in clinic have received a recipe for homemade bone broth at some point. Its so easy to make and can be frozen for future consumption. . I have been experimenting with Best of the Bone, bone broth...Tandoori Spice today . So, for those of you who are time poor or after something a little different, these are really nice! ... If you havent got the time to make your own broth, this is wonderful alternative to use as part of a treatment plan I utilise to support digestive function. Supports gut, joint and skin health. Rich in collagen, amino acids, minerals, essential fatty acids, healthy fats, glucosamines and chondroitin (for joint health) Add to your soup, sauces, add to meals to add flavour and nutrition. Or simply enjoy as a hot drink . . .

20.01.2022 Endometriosis is a chronic problem for up to 10 percent of women ages 25 to 40. Thankfully, there is more research looking into this painful condition. When they treated the mice with the broad-spectrum antibiotic metronidazole, the lesions became smaller. Inflammation also was reduced. Naturopathic treatment strategies for endometriosis inc...lude: 1. Supporting healthy estrogen clearance 2. Pain management 3. Dietary and lifestyle strategies 4. 20.01.2022 A large part of my degree and continued professional education involved/involves learning about biochemical pathways, absorption/excretion of vitamins/minerals etc. etc... We now live in a world jam packed with information that can lead you down a rabbit hole, with any supplement/dietary advice available over the internet. Is this good? ... Maybe? Or does it add to the confusion? What I love most, and hopefully share; is getting right back to basics, which doesnt involve scrutinising every bit of food on your plate, counting and weighing. First and foremost we need restorative sleep, movement, sharing our time with friends/family and keeping stress levels in check for good health. Eating seasonal, locally produced foods where you can, cooking your own meals and sharing meals with people you care about, to me, is more important. Even better, if you can grow your own food....amazing So as complicated as it can seem, I like to keep it simple.

20.01.2022 This webinar is wonderful for anyone who is interested in the Ayurveda approach to gut health and the importance of digestion and digestive fire. It provides a detailed explanation as to why I focus on digestion. You are what you digest

18.01.2022 ~Iris Analysis ~ From the moment I set foot in my first Iridology class in the 90's, I fell in love with it. 13.01.2022 ~Digestive Spice Mixes ~ Spice mixes are a wonderful way to enhance digestive fire. I will often use these as part of light diet to support the digestive system and take a little load off the body. Using spices and diet with opposite qualities to symptoms will help to balance the body. ... When choosing the correct mix, I will take these areas into consideration: Rasa (or taste), there are six tastes that are recognised in Ayurveda. Sweet, salty, sour, pungent, bitter and astringent. Virya (energy), herbs will tend to heat or cool the body. For example sweet is cooling and pungent taste has a heating effect. Vipaka (post digestive effect), this relates to the post digestive effect in relation to absorption and elimination. This gives us an understanding what impact a herb/spice will have particularly with long term use. As we understand, the long term use of a herb may eventually aggravate symptoms, which is why its always good to reassess what remedies you are taking . . . .

11.01.2022 At least during stage 4 lockdown, I have been able to look after my garlic. They look good so far! Garlic possesses mainly pungent and heating energetics. In Ayurveda, garlic can be used to support kapha and vata dosha but it can aggravate pitta, so if you experience something like indigestion garlic may not be for you. ... Garlic supports the digestive, respiratory system, nervous system, reproductive and circulatory system. Garlic is pretty easy to grow and therapeutically it has many wonderful applications. See more

07.01.2022 FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH ~FOOD FIRST ~ I using food as medicine in female reproductive conditions...especially culinary herbs and spices! A treatment plan needs to be sustainable a long time after supplementation has been reduced and chronic, long standing conditions such as endometriosis and PCOS require a long term plan. ... Often focus needs to be around diet and lifestyle strategies to help reduce stress, inflammation and most importantly digestion...yes digestion again! . Dont underestimate the use of aromatic herbs and spices. . 06.01.2022 The end of my day...spent making herbal bath soaks

06.01.2022 I have had some feedback re positive changes occurring throughout treatment plans, which of course is awesome! However, positive changes dont need to be massive, but they do provide valuable information because it means you are most likely on the right track. It provides you with the motivation to keep going.... Chronic health concerns dont disappear overnight, they require time and there are many levels to consider. I was taught, as a general rule, for every year you have been unwell, you need to look at one month's treatment. For example, if you have been ill for five years, you are looking at LEAST 5 months treatment. I believe it takes a little longer, as people often forget the 'lead-up', or haven't even considered it. The story of the lead up often provides many valuable clues. . . . .

05.01.2022 Another awesome webinar on the approach to rejuvenation practices through the use of Ayurveda. Health is ongoing, nothing changes overnight, but once balance has been established supporting the tissue, organ, system that has been impacted is important for your ongoing wellbeing. 02.01.2022 I wake tired. I just never feel 100% I feel a general sense of fatigue during the day but seem to fire on all cylinders 8pm onwards? Then I find it hard to go to bed. ... My body feels achy when I wake. I am no longer having to get up at night to do night feeds or settle children. Why am I still so tired? I hear this story All Of The Time More often than not, a well meaning friend has told you to get an iron supplement ...or something that has worked for them. This, however, may not be the reason YOU feel exhausted. I believe everything you do to improve your health is fantastic, but if you are not getting the results you want, you may need to consider some other things. Before you go to purchase a supplement, the following questions need to be asked (this is by no means exhaustive and your practitioner will ask you a lot more). When was your last blood test? Was anything out of range? Were markers in optimal range? Before you take an iron supplement, please look at iron, ferritin levels, folate and B12. Vitamin D? How is your thyroid functioning? Are you currently taking medication? Do you have a chronic health concern? How is your digestive system functioning? Waking up feeling achy can be a sign of poor digestion. How is your appetite? Nausea? Reflux? ... Let’s not forget stress and inflammation... The questions go on and on and on! So, I guess my point is, if you decide to take a herb or supplement that isn’t really targeting your specific reason (again, I see this a lot) for your fatigue, you will not be addressing the issue. As you can see, there are many areas to look at. Always good to have a chat to your healthcare practitioner if you have any questions or concerns. Of course, we always want you to feel better. 01.01.2022 ~Compost~ Strange image, I know...its my compost patch. And I have to admit, Im pretty proud of it. ... Ayurveda and naturopathic philosophy teach us, our health does not depend on the supplements we take. Using complementary medicine also relies on the food we eat, where it has come from, who we share our meals with, how it is prepared and presented, our thoughts and emotions. A lot right? When using Complementary medicine, many areas such as lifestyle patterns, diet, seasons, climate, constitutional weaknesses and strengths are taken into consideration. This brings me back to my compost! Start small, but just start somewhere. A small area to begin growing some of your own produce is all you need Create a small area, dedicated to your kitchen scraps and watch that space develop into soil you will WANT to grow something nutritious out of. It may seem overwhelming at times, but I believe, if you sprinkle those spices on your meals liberally (daily), move, grow some of your own food (even if its a few herbs) and cook the majority of your meals (not out of a jar) you will be well on the way to implementing strong foundations for good health And your own vegetable garden really is a fantastic place to begin. Id love to see some of your gardens! . . . .
