19.01.2022 It’s fledgling season so here’s some information on making makeshift nests to reunite fledglings with their parents. Don’t forget to also leave out water for wildlife!!! The hot weather is starting so leaving water out is THE best way to help wildlife. Water NOT food- will help them. I’ll do a post with some water information soon. ... Thanks Wildlife Victoria for these fantastic sheets.

Did you know:... -A goanna can grow up to 2 metres in length - There are 25 species of goanna that are found in Australia - Goannas are carnivores so they eat insects, lizards, birds, eggs, mammals, etc. -Goannas lay eggs -they can grow longer than 2 metres. -a goanna can run 25 km/h

19.01.2022 Keep Victoria Beautiful- Substainable Cities Awards. During lockdown Libby was nominated for these awards by Banyule City Council. She was shortlisted and interviewed via zoom. The interview was so much fun for her- its always great having her talk to people about the work that she does. It spreads the message! On the weekend while we were up at Koonoomoo, we received an email from Naomi at Banyule City Council, congratulating Libby on winning the "Young Legends" award. Just... amazing! Lib does not do this for awards- she does it to raise awarness and hopefully inspire others that there are many ways they can help, no matter their age or abilities. However, awards bring more awareness to her work which then, expands her reach. So she is very thankful for this recognition of her work and very thankful to all her supporters that enable her to do what she does. 18.01.2022 Thank you to my mystery shopper for these Fluor pink line marking paint cans. They will be given to wildlife rescuers as a part of their Christmas gift. What is this used for? Have you seen a deceased animal sprayed with a cross?... Is it to let council know about a deceased animal to be removed? It’s what many people think but it’s not. Rescuers mark deceased wildlife with a cross so that other rescuers and people know, the animal has been checked for pouch young. It saves others stopping when they don’t need to and, if a member of public calls a deceased animal in and they’re asked if it’s been sprayed and they say yes, the rescuer can assure them that it has been checked. This is the best colour for marking deceased wildlife too. Other colours like white, yellow or brown get lost in fur, red looks too much like and blue and green are too hard to see. This Fluor pink can also been seen from a distance and on pretty much all animals. I always mark wildlife plus move it as far away from the roadside as possible and lay them to rest. This is what my mentors taught me. We do this to protect other animals that may feed off bodies () plus it allows their family to come back to mourn them safely (especially come back to mourn their loved ones.) So if they are well away from the road, they too are protected. I always take time to respect them and place some roadside or on their body. Rescuer Christmas I’m looking to raise $500 just to buy vouchers for rescuers gifts this Christmas. If you can help out, please deposit money using his the ref rescuer and I’ll put your donation towards that. Or- if you prefer, I’m after $50 Caltex star fuel cards specifically. They can be left in my donation letter box (behind my s green) at 16 Parook Court, diamond creek.

18.01.2022 A memory of a donation made last year!

16.01.2022 Today, the Platypus has officially being re-classified as a "VULNERABLE SPECIES" in Victoria. Its so devastating to see that another animal has been added to this growing list. In 2017, I attended my first Clean Up event and loved it! I learned all about the platypus in our local creek and from then, I have been sharing what I learned with others. ... In 2018, I hosted another event with Melbourne Water in Diamond Creek. In 2020, I was once again a part of the Diamond Creek Clean Up Event hosted by our local traders. In 2021, we aim to make this bigger and better but more importantly, make it an annual event plus inspire more events like it. On Sunday, March 7th, I am helping to organise another Clean Up event in my town, Diamond Creek. So SAVE THE DATE and in the meantime, share with me, what you are going to do, to help our platypus, creeks, rivers and wildlife? What can you do? There are many things we can all do to help keep our platypus safe. - Keep our waterways clean Pick up ANY rubbish that may end up in our creeks and rivers. This includes rubbish in your street, park, school, sporting ground etc. ALL rubbish flows into storm water drains and ends up in our rivers and creeks. So if we can get it before it gets there, it helps. Small rubbish is especially dangerous but most dangerous of all, is any rubbish that wildlife can get tangled in. Hair ties, elastic bands, plastic drink lids are especially dangerous and commonly found on our wildlife. Before you throw out any of these, please cut them once to stop them being a "ring." SNIP before you BIN. - Report sightings of platypus to platypusSPOT. It's super easy to download the app, upload a photo and help record their locations/populations. There are of course places to donate money, but honestly, we need can do so much on our own that does not involve a single cent. Just time and effort. So, what can you do to help platypus? Can you organise a local clean up event in your area? Maybe fortnightly or monthly?? Raise awareness and help the environment and our platypus?

13.01.2022 Look who’s back! It’s been a couple of days since we’ve seen this crow in our water bucket. (It’s been a bit cooler). But today it’s back again. Enjoying a splash ... Leaving water out is one of the best ways you can HELP wildlife AND encourage them to naturally enjoy your garden. Be sure to it regularly and keep it filled up Leave a rock in it to weigh it down if it’s a light container. This also gives critters something to sit on if it’s deep Put some up high for other birds, mammals etc. Somewhere protected from predators Finally, make sure there is a stick in it that leads out. That way, if something small like a lizard for instance, falls in, it can get out. We have lots of different options in our yard. I’ll put another example in the comments. Do you leave water out?

13.01.2022 Another post with the same topic as the last one I shared ......... fishing line!!!! This happens so often, more than rescuers post about. Please dispose of your fishing line properly. balloon strings, hay twine etc. it’s all the same thing- a death trap for wildlife if it gets into our environment. ... Thankyou Krysti for doing all you could to locate help for this poor magpie.

12.01.2022 What an incredible story. But sadly this is common. What’s common? the part about people hitting an animal and not stopping immediately to check on it. Very common. ... The part about people stopping later on to check the damage to their car. Not to check for an animal- but to check the damage. Very common. Thankful that they eventually stopped to check the damage to their car AND that they finally called for help. We only wish people would stop when they hit an animal. Even if it can’t be saved it can have its suffering humanely ended and if it has a baby, many can be saved. If you hit an animal- PLEASE stop immediately!!!!! STOP as soon as safe CHECK for a pouch CALL for help/advice if you need it RESPECT our wildlife by doing these 3 steps. https://www.facebook.com/742954792443901/posts/4538749652864377/?extid=0&d=n Great work Hamilton Wildlife Shelter.
