21.01.2022 For today's #throwbackthursday we have one more from the Goldsworthy Collection unknown envelope. Fortunately, we have identified this photograph. This photo was taken outside the Cambridge Villa at Fairfield. This property was owned by William and Eliza Stimson. This house was designed by Varney Parkes, son of Sir Henry Parkes, and built in 1878 by Walter Furner for William Stimson, on the land of the former Male Orphan School along the Orphan School Creek grounds. William... was a pioneer farmer and business man, he served as mayor of the Smithfield-Fairfield Council from 1894-1895 and continued to be alderman up until years before his death in 1902. A couple of his sons, Walter and George, also become aldermen. Walter became alderman at a very young age in 1905 for Fairfield Council, serving as Mayor for several years, he became one of the most illustrious persons in Fairfield. George was mayor of the Cabramatta-Canley Vale Council and led the Church of Christ there. This image was perhaps taken during the late 1880s. We don’t know the occasion for it, however William, Walter and George together with other members of the family, can be recognised in the middle of this group. The Cambridge house was sold in 1911, to Mr Bell and then to Mr and Mrs Woods they lived there from 1939 to late 1960’s. In 1970, an attempt to save this house, students from the Cerdon College at Merrylands campaigned to stop its demolition, however a suspicious fire in 1975 caused severe damage to the structure and consequently it was demolished. Today the Cambridge Gardens housing stands on the site. (The Stimson family outside the Cambridge House, Fairfield. 08.01.2022 Today's #throwbackthursday comes to us from 1911, when evangelist Bro. Frederick Collins promoted the idea of erecting a church on a recently acquired site at the intersection of St Hilliers and Parramatta Roads, opposite the Sydney Meat Preserving Company at North Auburn. He went even further with this idea by proposing to build it in only one day, inspired by a successful attempt earlier the same year, in Victoria. This became the first church in NSW to be completed in one ...day. To achieve this remarkable feat, he followed the advice of Bro. W. H. Terry, architect and general superintendent and Bro. G. P. Jones, also an architect and aged in his 80’s. They undertook the construction together with 50 carpenters, 20 painters, 10 plumbers, and 40 handymen of whom the majority were volunteers and enthusiasts of the project. The building was approximately 17m long x 7m wide x 7m high. The brick foundations, windows, doors, structural frames and large boards were prepared beforehand and the food provided by ladies of the Auburn Congregation. It was a long day and some workmen spent the previous night on site to get an early start while others came from around Sydney on the first train. Building started at 6am and continued all day until midnight so that it was ready in time for the first service the next morning, given by Bro. A Fisher. This church was demolished for road widening purposes c.1960. Photo credits: Church of Christ, North Auburn, AHP01285, D Waters album. LS Collection, Cumberland City Council Library Service. 06.01.2022 For today’s #ThrowbackThursday we continue celebrating Remembrance Day. This year we remember the home front efforts to support the Second World War. During this time, daily life of people was affected in many ways due to men joining the armed forces. Many women took positions in factories and on farms to keep up with food supplies and most importantly keep providing for those at the front with uniforms and other necessities. Fundraising efforts from public and other aid orga...nisations like the Red Cross, made many streets become the centre of fetes, like the one shown on this photograph, the image was taken looking east from the corner of Chertsey Street, now Memorial avenue at Merrylands by Tony Maston in 1942 and is part of the Local Studies Collection from Cumberland Library Service (TM0053). #tbt TonyMaston #rememberanceday #poppyday #merrylands #worldwar #secondworldwar

02.01.2022 On 24 September 2000, the Sydney Olympic Games were already well on their way, many medals had been awarded and Sydney was in party mode. In athletics Cathy Freeman was about to run her semi-final and little did she know that the gold medal was waiting for her the next day. More competitions for the day were in diving, synchronised swimming, water polo, baseball, basketball, boxing, mountain cycling, fencing, football, artistic gymnastics, handball, hockey, rowing, sailing, ...table tennis, tennis, beach volleyball, volleyball, weightlifting and Greco-Roman wrestling. Running in tandem with the Olympic events was an explosion of social and cultural events and many artists created works inspired by the Olympics. Posters were one form of art that took on an Olympic focus as a way to obtain donations for the Games. In 1999, the Ink Group created a series of posters, designed by artists from all around Australia. Their creations formed part of more than 30 different designs focused on sports, the Games, mascots and Australian icons. We have couple of examples of them in our collection that you can see at our Flickr website. What where you doing that day? Share your memories. (Official Licenced poster designed for the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Mascots poster 001, Artwork by M. Sofilas, mascots designed by Matthew Hatton. Published by The Ink Group, Australia, 1999. 02.01.2022 Today's #throwbackthursday is an image is of Professor E. Evans’ dance studio in Harrow Road Auburn, and their annual ‘Cinderella’ presentation, held at Auburn Town Hall on Wednesday 14th September, 1904. That night the presentation included a ‘Ben Hur Dance’ as a highlight it was the first time the dance was performed in Australia. This image shows the moment in which the dancers emulate the chariot race from the story; the groups of dancers represent chariots formed by th...ree horses and a driver each. The performers were from group 1: misses Dayton, Bancroft and King (horses) and Mr. E. Evans Jr (driver); group 2: Messrs. B. Bosler, W. Rust and M. King (horses) and Miss Oliver (driver); group 3: Misses Davies, M. Williamson and May Hawksford (horses) and Mr E. Oliver (driver); group 4: Messrs A. Allen, W. Ramsay and W. Harris (horses) and Miss Ramsay (driver). The music was under the lead of Mr W. H. Brayley with 12 members of the band. As M.C. Professor Evans and Mr G. Weir as assistant. The Auburn Town Hall decorations were prepared by Mrs Evans. At the end of the night Professor and Mrs Evans were given a silver-cased razor strop and a silver trinket case by the Mayor, Alderman Farrar on behalf of the dance class of 1904. This photograph was part of the Auburn District Historical Society Collection AHSPF0014, donated to the Local Studies Collection at the Cumberland City Council Library.
