23.01.2022 $111,600 in grants and sponsorships awarded supporting local business Cessnock City Council is supporting local business through the annual Economic Developmen...t Grants and Sponsorships Program awarding $111,600 to support local business and stimulate economic growth. The program offers funding to Advance Cessnock City Partners, this includes business chambers, tourism bodies, training providers and community organisations. Council has approved funding for seven applications. Cessnock Chamber of Commerce, Kurri Kurri Towns with Heart and the Hunter Region Business HUB will benefit from this years’ program. This crucial funding is being invested into vital initiatives including small business training, business service awards and Kurri Kurri Visitor Centre. Sponsorship has also been granted for Cessnock STOMP Festival and Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival and for the town coordinators in both Cessnock and Kurri Kurri. Council’s Economic Development Manager, Tony Chadwick said the local business community is highly engaged and proactive, making Council’s decision to support business programs and initiatives an easy one. As a community we need to be collaborating and working together to recover from what has been an incredibly difficult period. These projects will have flow on affects to our entire business community. I’d also like to use this as a reminder for people to continue to participate in our Support Local campaign and shop locally. Your support really does have a huge impact on our operators. 13.01.2022 I will be moving a motion at this weeks council meeting relating to the proposed Gas Fired Power Station . Below is my motion. SUBJECT: Gas Fired Power Station MOTION: That:... 1, Council’s General Manager write to the Prime Minister, The Honourable Scott Morrison MP, Federal Minister for Energy, The Hon Angus Taylor MP, The Premier of NSW, The Hon Gladys Berejiklian MP, the Minister for Energy and Environment NSW, The Hon Matthew Kean MP, Cessnock State Member, The Hon Clayton Barr MP and Federal Member for Hunter, the Hon Joel Fitzgibbon MP and ask that they show their support for a gas-fired power generator in Kurri Kurri. 2, As part of the letter Cessnock City Council highlights the economic, employment, social and environmental benefits this project will bring to the Hunter in particular the Cessnock LGA. RATIONALE: By the year 2023 NSW will lose one of its major power generation plants in Liddell Power Station thus reducing available base-load power in NSW by 2,000 Megawatts. The Prime Minister in this year’s budget aims to increase manufacturing in Australia to become a more sustainable country post COVID 19. This will require a reliable source of energy. The proposed site at Kurri Kurri has the necessary electrical infrastructure already in place to support a gas-fired generator. The ultimate approval and construction of this gas-fired power generator of 1,000 Megawatts will go some way to closing the gap. Cr Rod Doherty

11.01.2022 SMELTER SITE REMEDIATION APPROVAL PAVES WAY FOR NEW DEVELOPMENT AND JOBS Plans to remediate a former hydro aluminum smelter site at Kurri Kurri in order to create a new commercial and industrial precinct have been approved by the NSW Government.... Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes said the approval to remediate the 80-hectare portion of the site as a containment cell for contaminated material had the potential to create thousands of new jobs for the region. This exciting step forward means plans can progress to redevelop the broader 2,000 hectare hydro site to create new jobs in the Hunter while maintaining approximately half of the land for environmental conservation, Mr Stokes said. Its proximity to the Hunter Expressway makes it ideal for a new commercial and industrial precinct and we look forward to working with the landowner and councils to develop a masterplan for the site. This is an area with great potential, especially considering the Government recently declared Snowy Hydro’s plans for a new $610 million gas fired power station as critical state significant infrastructure. Minister for Water, Property and Housing Melinda Pavey said the NSW Government had also agreed to take on the ongoing management of the containment cell once all the remediation works have been completed and certified. This agreement is crucial to the site’s remediation and future redevelopment, Mrs Pavey said. It ensures adequate arrangements are in place for the long-term management of the containment cell, safeguarding human and environmental health so we can unlock the potential of the site for business and the people of the Hunter region. Under the voluntary planning agreement, the Government’s Waste Assets Management Corporation (WAMC) will take on the ownership and environmental management of the containment cell once it has been suitably constructed and passed a five-year warranty period. WAMC’s management of the containment cell will be wholly funded by a $6.5 million development contribution. 08.01.2022 No mine in Wollombi! At this weeks ordinary meeting of council, Cr Dunn moved the amendment That the General Manager reply to correspondence from the Deputy Premier, ... -Thanking him for his prompt correspondence, -Noting that the Department of Regional NSW both hold and are in the process of relinquishing Mining Exploration Licenses, and -That it is the preferred option for Cessnock City Council, that License AUTH263 be proposed for and ultimately relinquished. That The General Manager write to the Member for Cessnock and the Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter seeking their support on the matter. This has caused great unnecessary animosity within the community, and council voted unanimously to back the residents in, and lobby to rescind the license. #WorkingForWollombi
07.01.2022 ACTIVE TRANSPORT GRANT HELPS GET INFRASTRUCTURE AND PEOPLE MOVING IN CESSNOCK The NSW Government will provide more than $1.5 million grants to Cessnock City Council to help deliver new infrastructure to promote walking and cycling in their community. The new infrastructure will make it easier for the community to get around their local area using active transport, Catherine Cusack, Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter said today.... This grant from the NSW Government will enable the construction of more than 3 kilometres of shared path linking the Cessnock CBD with public schools, sporting complexes and community centres, said Ms Cusack. Active transport is a great way for the local community to get around and this new infrastructure will help to provide safe access for pedestrians and cyclists to schools and other local facilities. Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said it’s a fantastic announcement that will increase pedestrian connectivity in Cessnock. Council will construct shared paths, for pedestrian and cyclists in the Cessnock CBD and a number of pedestrian refuges that will make it easier and safer for residents moving around the town centre. The paths will better connect Bridges Hill Park to the CBD, said Mayor Pynsent. The project also includes pathways that provide safe passage for both pedestrians and cyclists looping the Cessnock CBD, connecting to two public schools and the Cessnock Youth and Outreach Service. The creation of this shared path is part of an investment of around $710 million in walking and cycling infrastructure over the next four years that will bring the NSW Government’s total investment to almost $1.1 billion the largest in the State’s history. The NSW Government continues to encourage people to walk and cycle as part of their everyday commute, promoting an active and healthy lifestyle while also helping to relieve congestion on the roads and public transport, said Minister for Transport and Roads, Andrew Constance. Further information about these projects will be available from Cessnock City Council as the project progresses.
06.01.2022 Community urged to continue to be responsible and social distance Cessnock City Council is urging residents and local businesses to ensure they are doing the right thing when it comes to stopping the spread of COVID-19.... Our region continues to fair well and is recovering from the COVID-19 Pandemic, however the developments this week in Victoria remind us how quickly transmission can occur. It’s been positive to see our businesses reopen their doors and trade again, particularly seeing our community getting involved in the Support Local Campaign. Council’s General Manager, Lotta Jackson is encouraging everyone in the community to ensure they are following government restrictions and advice. We must not be complacent. Social distancing, hand washing and staying at home when you’re sick are all very important steps each individual can take that will make a real difference and save lives. We don’t want to see a situation in our community where we are forced to go back into a lockdown. Let’s all continue to do our bit every day to protect our more at risk residents and to ensure our businesses can continue to operate. It’s good to see businesses conducting their trading in line with NSW Government restrictions. These restriction eased earlier in the month and we want to continue in this positive direction. Please make sure you are compliant with Public Health Orders. For information on these visit the NSW Government’s COVID-19 website.
