24.01.2022 More on setting yourself and your year up with health supporting goals, not weight based ones from Canadian dietitian colleague @vincciRD "The diet and fitness industries rely on repeat business. And there wouldn't be any if diets actually worked. " Exactly. #nondietapproach #nondiet #dietitiansydney #nutritionistsydney ... #edrecovery #eatingdisordertreatment #bingeeatingdisorder #mindfuleating #intuitiveeating #bodypositive #bopo #haes #healthateverysize See more

23.01.2022 Yep! You deserve real rice :)

23.01.2022 Do you have a pre-teen daughter or know someone who does? Puberty is often the time that body image trouble and disordered eating start. This book will help her to see her body as amazing, and something to care for with compassion, rather than embark on a lifelong battle with. I'm buying some copies now! Yes my daughter is only 3... haha!

22.01.2022 FYI for colleagues!

21.01.2022 Some truths to raise awareness coming up to #WorldEatingDisordersDay My faves: #5- all people, in all body shapes & sizes can be affected, and #9- full recovery IS possible for everyone! But early detection and treatment make it quicker and easier. There's no such thing as 'not sick enough' to get help. #eatingdisordertreatment #dietitiansydney #nondietapproach

20.01.2022 "No matter how much you think you know about the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, odds are one image comes to mind: an emaciated white teenage girl. But that s...tereotype ignores the fact that anorexia knows no age, gender or race, and it sidesteps the reality that anorexia can happen at any body weight." See more

18.01.2022 An alternative new year's resolution?

17.01.2022 I generally have zero interest in award ceremony fashion, but loved this! Women show up every day in pants, but the minute a man wears a dress, the seas part. Uh huh! My 4yr old daughter loved it too. Celebrating diversity (whether body size & shape, gender, sexuality, cultural background, its all the same set of skills imo) starts at home

17.01.2022 I'm hiring! If you know a Dietitian with significant experience working with people with eating disorders, please send them my way! Excerpt from the ad: "Liberation Nutrition is a HAES aligned, small specialist eating disorder treatment dietetic practice in the Sutherland Shire. I'm looking for an APD who is highly skilled and experienced in this niche area of practice to cover a maternity locum contract, with potential to continue with the practice following the locum period... if this suits both parties. This position is perfect for someone who wants the freedom to exercise your own sound clinical judgement that private practice offers, but doesn't necessarily want the admin burden of running the practice yourself!" https://daa.asn.au//maternity-locum-contract-eating-diso/

17.01.2022 Some thoughts for those who struggle with food during the holiday season

17.01.2022 Fact: Body image has nothing to do with how you actually look! The non-diet approach helps you work towards body acceptance, and build self compassion, regardless of whether size or shape change in the process. No diet (or 'lifestyle' as they call them now...) can offer you this. #nondietapproach #dietitiansydney #nutritionistsydney #edrecovery #eatingdisordertreatment #bingeeatingdisorder #prorecovery #haes #healthateverysize #mindfuleating #intuitiveeating #bodypositive #bopo #bodyliberation #bodyimage #bodykindness #selfcompassion

12.01.2022 Couldnt agree with Dr G more! 1. You cant tell whether someone has an eating disorder by looking at them 2. The most effective treatment will be different for everybody 3. Not all of the medical complications are neatly measurable with a simple test- I would add that the mental health and implications for families/ partners also have a severe impact on quality of life. Definitely recommend following Dr G if you dont already

12.01.2022 Experiencing a fat phobic attack, verbally, physically or even delivered with love and concern - feels terrible and can knock you down. It's something which can... linger with you for days, weeks, and even for many years. Knowing what to do in the moment, can help you to start to process it as soon as possible and can help strengthen your resilience. These experiences can be very shame inducing, understanding how shame functions can be really helpful in overcoming or buffering against the attack. . . For many years, after I had experienced fat phobia especially public harassment or being bullied at school, I would keep it to myself. I was too ashamed because I was entrenched in my own internalised fat phobia, and didn't want anyone to know that it happened to me. One of the most powerful things I started to do was tell someone I trusted about it when it happened, if possible, on the same day. I also started to allow myself to have emotions about it, to feel sadness and outwards anger, instead of helplessly sitting in my shame and self-directed anger. . . How have you managed fat phobia in the moment, or just after? Did you let yourself cry or be angry? Was it hard to tell someone about it? Did you think you deserved it? . . #bodyimage #dietculture #healthateverysize #therapy #edrecovery #counselling #weightstigma #trauma #bullying

09.01.2022 How to give your kids the gift of a good relationship with food We do #1 & 3 in our house.

09.01.2022 Here is a Level A evidence statement (the highest possible level of certainty) from the Australian National Medical Health and Research Council (NHMRC - the gov...ernment's health research arm) showing that weight regain is what is absolutely expected after intentional weight loss. For the majority. _____ "Weight loss following lifestyle intervention is maximal at 6-12 months. Regardless of the degree of initial weight loss, most weight is regained within a 2-year period and by 5 years the majority of people are at their pre-intervention body weight" _____ Those who do not regain weight are statistical outliers, even if they do publish pretty books and end up in front of our eyes and ears ALL THE DAMN TIME, and contribute to this misconception that lasting weight loss is available if people would only just try hard enough. Bodies don't work that way, no matter how some might wish they might. _____ Department of Health and Ageing, National Health and Medical Research Council, Clinical practice guidelines for the management of overweight and obesity in adults, adolescents and children in Australia, Melbourne 2013, p161 _____ https://www.nhmrc.gov.au/guidelines-publications/n57 See more

07.01.2022 New podcasts & videos out from Everymind: Around four per cent of Australians are affected by an eating disorder at any one time, with over 300,000 of those people living in NSW. These new resources emphasise the importance of seeking help early, and will enable people experiencing an eating disorder, and their loved ones, to make some sense of what they are going through, said Mr Bryant.

04.01.2022 So exciting! Medicare will significantly up funding for those undergoing eating disorder treatment in Nov 2019. The new Medicare item number will give rebates for 20 dietitian visits, and 40 psychologist visits per year. I really hope the new rebate amount is higher than the usual $52.95 for dietetics also- but hey, either way it's a huge win! #eatingdisordertreatment #eatingdisorderdietitian... https://www.smh.com.au//people-with-eating-disorders-to-ge

04.01.2022 Agreed, before-recovery & after-recovery photos can be very unhelpful, because they open the door to comparing yourself with others (generally not helpful for any reason!), and could contribute to the myth that people with an eating disorder look sick.

04.01.2022 Yes! A small but important win, and sign that things are moving in the right direction.

03.01.2022 Yes! Food is for eating & enjoying, not calculating.

02.01.2022 Body love isnt the same as body acceptance, or neutrality. Although its great to see more voices around saying its ok to not dislike your body, it can sure feel alienating to think that if you dont feel body love, or youre not ready to even contemplate this, youre not doing it right. Truth: you dont need to EVER reach a place of loving your body to treat it with respect, trust what it tells you about its needs, and function each day without self consciousness getting in the way. In my experience, helping patients to move toward body whatever is so much more realisticand workable. You can do a lot from a place of body-whatever! #nondiet #eatingdisordertreatment #Sydneydietitian
