17.01.2022 Id like to thank Mark Bailey for being the first Transport Minister in 7 years of the No Permit No Park Campaign to sit down with me and hear our stories and i...deas. Yesterday I made my way to parliament to meet with the minister, policy staff and executives of TMR to discuss how we can better work together to identify issues in the enforcement of disability parking laws and ideas for solutions to improve it. Work smarter not harder right! The bill is expected to be passed in parliament within the next few months. We look forward to these improvements and working with everyone to ensure equitable access and opportunities for people with disabilities. 08.01.2022 I read the leaked report ,in the Australian, of shadow treasurer Jim Chalmers propose speech to the Light on the Hill dinner with a mixture of amusement, anger ...and despair. I am over being lectured by the right wing of the party that we must move back to the centre ground of politics and prize aspiration opportunity and growth. I am over being told that we will not win in 2022 by re -contesting and re-prosecuting the 2019 election. I am over the view that the progressive policies Labor took to the 2019 election was succumbing to populism. I am over the argument that Labor does not understand the importance of business in creating jobs and growth and Labor does not recognise the need for budget responsibility. I am over those in the right of the party who think everything that was done during the Hawke/Keating era on industrial relations reform, free trade and neo- liberalism is a blueprint for the future. I am over the view that we can win the next election by capitulating on our principles and values and by becoming a pale imitation of the Morrison government. Labor was never formed to become Conservatives with a conscience. When, in the Labor party did pursuing policies designed to ensure fair, equitable and progressive tax policies become a hindrance to aspiration, opportunity and growth? When did promoting policies designed to put a roof over the heads of disadvantage Australians, give working class Australians an opportunity to attend well resourced schools and TAFE , ensure public hospitals are properly funded become a barrier to aspiration opportunity and growth? When did the Labor Party decide ignoring the plight of the poor to benefit the rich would give us a better opportunity of winning government? I joined the Labor Party in the early 70s because it was the party that stood up for the working class, fought against the institutionalised advantage of the rich, and was determined to build a better Australian society. Labor was the party that gave the poor access to legal aid, the party that built sewage systems in Western Sydney, the party that understood the importance of the trade union movement, the party that gave us a universal health system and access to university education. Of course we will not go to the next election with exactly the same policy platform. Nevertheless, if we go to the next election and ignore the need to raise funds by reducing unsustainable tax breaks and ensuring business pays their fair share of tax, then we will be condemned to having no capacity to improve essential government services. Where will the funding come from to improve opportunities for skill development and training at TAFE, support business to improve their productive performance, and raise the living standards of working class Australians? If we abandon policies that have reflected Labors values, principles and vision for the future then we will never gain the confidence of the majority of Australians to deal with the disastrous effects of man-made global warming and other policy challenges that require courage. Capitulating to neoliberalism will mean the Light on the Hill will be extinguished for a long time to come.
