25.01.2022 Wouldn’t it be safer to have responsible, peaceful, socially distanced protest?

23.01.2022 The state of disaster is over but the state of emergency remains. We must be vigilant to ensure human rights are only limited to the extent it is necessary and proportionate.

20.01.2022 Listen, reflect, change. All men can help to end sexism from the Prime Minister down.

19.01.2022 LV opposes the Commonwealth Government’s #budget2020 proposal that both Partner visa applicants and their Australian permanent resident sponsors meet English language criteria. Everyone should be free to live in Australia with their loved ones irrespective of each other’s English language abilities. LV is also opposed because of the unintended consequence that vulnerable women will be on less secure visas and may feel compelled to stay with perpetrators of violence.

19.01.2022 Civil liberties groups call for leniency with fines Liberty Victoria vice-president Julia Kretzenbacher called on police to show restraint with fines, and to instead issue more warnings to people found to be breaching coronavirus lockdown rules. "The fines are quite high and people are struggling financially and it's therefore no surprise that people are struggling to pay them," Ms Kretzenbacher said.... "The response should be a public health response and not a policing response, and in particular we're concerned about reports that fines have been issued disproportionately to more vulnerable people, including young people." The backs of two uniformed police officers in Melbourne. Police will issue the $4,957 fines to anyone gathering in breach of current coronavirus restrictions.(ABC News: Gemma Hall) Liberty Victoria is also concerned that the threat of hefty fines may discourage people from getting tested and being open with contact tracers, for fear of being subjected to more stringent restrictions that carry penalties if breached.

17.01.2022 Your home country should be your safe harbour. We've had more than a year to create a system to ensure Australians stranded oversea can safely return home.

16.01.2022 We agree, read our press release here: https://libertyvictoria.org.au//liberty-victoria-very-conc

15.01.2022 Read our opposition to the Omnibus Bill here: https://libertyvictoria.org.au//200917%20-%20LV%20media%20

14.01.2022 We’ve joined with a number of other rights, advocacy and legal groups in writing to the acting Premier, James Merlino, to express concern about the 14 day quarantine period in prisons at a time when there is no community transmission of covid. Limitation of human rights need to be proportionate.

13.01.2022 Americans aren't just set to elect a new president, they have also overwhelmingly chosen to support common sense drug policies. Every single state initiative wh...ich removed criminal penalties for drug possession was successful. Four more states have legalised cannabis, with another two allowing access to medicinal cannabis. That means 1/3 of Americans will now have access to legal cannabis. Not to mention that Oregon has become the second place in the world to decriminalise all drugs, while also legalising psilocybin for therapeutic use. Well done leading the way, Oregon!!

12.01.2022 If NSW can have responsible, peaceful protests of up to 500 people, why can’t Victoria?

10.01.2022 Liberty Victoria is very concerned about the proposed new and increased powers in the Omnibus Bill. It would create a regime for preventative detention with no proper oversight. It is not necessary. Our statement is available at the link below.

08.01.2022 Live and let live. Today on Trans Visibility Day we tip the hat to everyone bravely and proudly being who they are and by doing so, making our society more inclusive, accepting and safe for everyone.

08.01.2022 Great news but a decision far too long in the making. Journalists are a fundamental part of our democracy and shouldn't be exposed to chilling threats of prosecution.

07.01.2022 Our work was acknowledged in the second reading of Victoria's new spent convictions scheme bill! We are so proud to have contributed a small part to this fight ...for much needed criminal justice reform. 'Introducing this Bill recognises that historical convictions for eligible crimes should not stop people from accessing jobs, training and housing. In too many instances, the stigma of a minor historic conviction has had unjustifiably significant and ongoing impacts, sometimes lasting a lifetime. This stigma is often carried regardless of how minor the offence was or how long ago it occurred. Such impacts of a historical conviction can be out of proportion to what society would consider justified. They can result in a cycle of disadvantage and entrenchment in the justice system and even encourage further reoffending.' https://hansard.parliament.vic.gov.au/search/

04.01.2022 "This is a national crisis deserving national attention." It sure is.

02.01.2022 This is a great cause - lend some support to 3CR's Done By Law!

01.01.2022 Concerning reading. The safest place is a cage.

01.01.2022 We must improve how our justice system responds to sexual offences including by introducing restorative justice measures. But we can’t undermine the onus of proof and the presumption of innocence in doing so. Our submissions to the Victorian Law Reform Commission's Inquiry into Responses by the Justice System to Sexual Offences, including on a proposed "grab and drag" offence can be read here: https://libertyvictoria.org.au//Liberty%20Victoria%20-%20S and here: https://libertyvictoria.org.au//improving-response-justice
