11.01.2022 An exciting time for Canberran anglers is the annual opening of the trout season, starting on the October long weekend. #WeAreCBR A gem in the #ACTHeritageLibrary is the Edward Gooch fishing collection showing two decades of notes, sketches and data of Mr Edward (Ted) Ussher Gooch from 1964-1984. Ted kept full and accurate records of every fish he caught over a period of nearly twenty years. He recorded details of weight and length, when and where caught, what lures or fli...es were used, and even the contents of each fish’s stomach. Ted spent many hours sketching the things he saw while fishing and walking through the bush. He also meticulously crafted fishing flies, many based on his observations of various insects and other water life. Alpine Trout Fishing Australia, The Alpine Angler, Trout Fishing NSW, Tumut fishing, Tumut Fly Fishing - Tumut Australia, NSW Freshwater Fishing may particularly enjoy these!

11.01.2022 Blasting back to 1960s to acknowledge World Space Week! If you have space in your calendar, learn about the role Australia has played in international deep space tracking right here in Canberra’s backyard. Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station was established as part of the Apollo moon missions in the 1960s, in what became Namadgi National Park. It sent commands and received telemetry from the spacecraft, and also tracked its position. After the Apollo series it was used for th...e US Skylab Mission and the joint US-Russia Apollo-Soyuz Mission. After that the station was reconfigured for the NASA Deep Space Network, and finally closed in the early 1980s. The Cassegrain antenna was moved to the Tidbinbilla tracking station nearby, where it remains part of the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex. If you have any photos we would love to see them. Share them on the #ACTHeritageLibrary Flickr page, ‘Our Canberra Stories http://bit.ly/OurCanberraStories. Photo: 1966, The Canberra Times Collection

07.01.2022 Have you been hanging out for Hideout, Jack Heath’s newest book from the very popular, and very gruesome Hangman series ? Check out the interview and find out how the very lively, smiley, friendly Jack comes up with such dark, threatening characters and twisted story lines. Wishing Jack Heath all the best for the JACK HEATH ‘HIDEOUT’ BOOK LAUNCH on Sunday at Dymocks Belconnen! 02.01.2022 At the #ACTHeritageLibrary we were recently asked about trees seen on the top of buildings around Canberra. "Tree topping" or "topping off" was a common sight in Canberra in the 1970s. Workers would attach a tree to the highest point of a new structure. The tradition began approximately 2700 BC to the time of the Egyptians. A live plant honoured those who died during a pyramid's construction. An evergreen tree was placed on the highest point of a newly completed building in the early Italian Renaissance. Following the Renaissance various countries modified the ceremony to fit local custom. Tree topping symbolises the safe completion of the most dangerous phase of construction. We hope this tops off your day!
