24.01.2022 #Serotonin is considered a natural mood stabilizer. It affects every part of your body, from your emotions to your motor skills. Serotonin is a chemical nerve ...cells produce that is responsible for many of the important functions that get us through the day. If your levels aren’t in balance, it can affect your #mental, #physical, and #emotional well-being. When your serotonin levels are normal, you feel: happier, calmer, more focused, less anxious and more emotionally stable. Generally, the normal range for serotonin levels in your blood is 101283 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL). High levels of serotonin may be a sign of carcinoid syndrome. Serotonin is found mostly in the digestive system, although it’s also in blood platelets and throughout the central nervous system. Serotonin is made from the essential amino acid tryptophan. This amino acid must enter your body through your diet and is commonly found in foods such as nuts, cheese, and red meat. Tryptophan deficiency can lead to lower serotonin levels. This can result in mood disorders, such as anxiety or depression. Decreased serotonin in humans has repeatedly been correlated with impulsivity and aggression (56,57,58). Low serotonin in animals is also related to an inability to modulate arousal, as exemplified by an exaggerated startle (62,63), and increased arousal in response to novel stimuli, handling, or pain (63). The behavioral effects of serotonin depletion on animals is characterized by hyperirritability, hyperexitability, and hypersensitivity, and an ...exaggerated emotional arousal and/or aggressive display, to relatively mild stimuli (63). These behaviors bear a striking resemblance to the phenomenology of PTSD in humans. Furthermore, serotonin re-uptake inhibitors have been found to be the most effective pharmacological treatment of both obsessive thinking in people with OCD (64), and of involuntary preoccupation with traumatic memories in people with PTSD (65,66). It is likely that serotonin plays a role in the capacity to monitor the environment flexibly and to respond with behaviors that are situation-appropriate, rather than reacting to internal stimuli that are irrelevant to current demands. Here’s how serotonin acts in various functions across your body: Bowel movements: Serotonin is found primarily in the body’s stomach and intestines. It helps control your bowel movements and function. Mood: Serotonin in the brain is thought to regulate anxiety, happiness, and mood. Low levels of the chemical have been associated with depression, and increased serotonin levels brought on by medication are thought to decrease arousal. Nausea: Serotonin is part of the reason why you become nauseated. Production of serotonin rises to push out noxious or upsetting food more quickly in diarrhea. The chemical also increases in the blood, which stimulates the part of the brain that controls nausea. Sleep: This chemical is responsible for stimulating the parts of the brain that control sleep and waking. Whether you sleep or wake depends on what area is stimulated and which serotonin receptor is used. Blood clotting: Blood platelets release serotonin to help heal wounds. The serotonin causes tiny arteries to narrow, helping form blood clots. Bone health: Serotonin plays a role in bone health. Significantly high levels of serotonin in the bones can lead to osteoporosis, which makes the bones weaker. Sexual function: Low levels of serotonin are associated with increased libido, while increased serotonin levels are associated with reduced libido. Natural serotonin boosters: Exposure to bright light: Sunshine or light therapy are commonly recommended remedies for treating seasonal depression. Exercise: Regular exercise can have mood-boosting effects. A healthy diet: Foods that can increase serotonin levels include eggs, cheese, turkey, nuts, salmon, tofu, and pineapple. Meditation: Meditating can help relieve stress and promote a positive outlook on life, which can greatly boost serotonin levels. https://www.healthline.com/health/mental-health/serotonin van der Kolk, Bessel. 02.01.2022 The #scientific way to raise our kids is so intuitively #simple that many parents are likely to underestimate its importance. Let’s celebrate 'Parenting Basic...s,' as explored in a report released by Notre Dame University pediatricians and public health researchers. In the report, researchers explore the latest science for children’s optimal #mental, #physical and #emotional development, and they found that the best advice is as basic as it is pivotal. Existing and emerging scientific evidence should inform our actions to help children have the best possible start and a healthy, fulfilling and satisfying life. It’s not simply going back to basics, it’s understanding why the basics are important, explains lead author Dr Christine Bennett, a pediatrician, mother of five and Dean of the School of Medicine at Notre Dame University. Up-to-date research areas include: The impact of the child’s environment through epigenetics; The developing #brain and neuroplasticity; The potential of positive psychology; The emerging role of the microbiome; and The importance of social inclusion and social connection. The emerging science of #epigenetics now reveals how environmental influences (particularly during the early years) are able to modify the expression of our inherited genetic code, in an attempt to prepare us for future adult life. Recent research in the field of #neuroplasticity has demonstrated the degree to which our brains change and adapt in response to our environment. Neuroplasticity is greatest during pregnancy and in the first years of life, however, some adaptive change is possible in our neural architecture throughout life. Recent research has shown positive changes in a child’s home environment can reduce the impact of early adverse events, improving the child’s development and life opportunities. #Positive psychology fosters the development of positive emotions such as hope and #gratitude, positive #relationships and a focus on #strengths. A child’s sense of self is influenced by feedback from family, teachers and friends. Considering strengths rather than weaknesses, encourages engagement and aspirations that strengthen self-esteem, a sense of belonging and purpose, all of which are protective of good mental health. The gut #microbiome, which is the ecosystem of trillions of microorganisms living within us, plays a key role in digestion, absorption and synthesis of nutrients. The composition and functioning of this biome is influenced by what we eat. This microbiome, in turn, influences our #immune system and brain function, as well as our #metabolism, #weight and #mood. Feelings of #social isolation across the lifespan are increasingly being recognised as one of the most significant determinants of health and morbidity. In children, loneliness is positively correlated with disturbances in sleep and deficits in executive functioning, as well as increased experiences of #depression, #anxiety, #headaches and abdominal discomfort. To achieve the best possible health and well-being, each of us needs a childhood that fosters: Optimal growth and development; Positive mental well-being and resilience; Effective education and learning; Love and strong social connections; and A sense of spirituality and purpose. The series of posts upcoming on parenting basics aims to remind us all to follow our intuition and return to the simple truths. In a complex world that is rich in ‘information overload’, science supports us doing what deep down, as parents, we’ve known to do all along. The artwork attached is a summary of the research, and the PDF of the report, and the printable PDF of the artwork, can be downloaded from Neurochild Village at https://www.facebook.com/groups/NeurochildVillage/?ref=share https://www.theage.com.au//the-scientific-way-to-raise-chi #neurochild #familygoals #brainscience
