22.01.2022 Arctocephalus forsteri New Zealand fur seal Did you know that male and female New Zealand fur seals feed in different places. A 2005 study found that females typically feed in shallower waters with shorter dive times compared to males who travelled further and longer to feed and dove to greater depths. The rearing of pups falls solely on the mum. It’s thought that this, along with the female’s smaller size may explain the difference in diving behaviour. #lifeasweknowit_au #seals #furseal #NZ #australia #wildlife #underwater #ocean #marine #mammal #biology #nature #wildlifephotography #moody #igersnature #gopro #goproanz #animalelite

20.01.2022 Gorilla gorilla Western Lowland Gorilla It’s hard to look at this image and not see a strikingly human resemblance. There’s a good reason for that - after chimpanzees, gorillas are our closest relatives, sharing up to 98% of our DNA. They’re so closely related to us that they can suffer from the same diseases as we do. Having evolved in isolation from some human pathogens, gorillas can be highly susceptible to our diseases and something as benign as the common cold could k...ill them. Understanding this interface between human, animal and environmental health will become vital to conservation in the future as a growing human population infringes even further upon wildlife habitat. Fortunately, the emerging One Health philosophy is beginning to deal with these issues and provides hope for a positive future for people and wildlife alike. #lifeasweknowit_au #gorilla #ape #life #animals #wildlife #nature #wildlifephotography #animals #onehealth #tarongazoo #forthewild

17.01.2022 Arctocephalus forsteri New Zealand fur seal Fur seals are covered in thick fur and blubber designed to keep them warm, but what if they need to cool down? If you spot a seal on a hot day you may notice that they spend a fair bit of time floating upside down. This allows them to air out their fur free and highly vascularised flippers, cooling down the passing blood. Here’s an underwater perspective of this behaviour. #lifeasweknowit_au #seals #furseal #NZ #australia #wildlife #underwater #ocean #marine #mammal #biology #nature #wildlifephotography #moody #igersnature #gopro #goproanz

16.01.2022 Panthera tigris sondaica Sumatran tiger Earlier this month, the United Nations released a report detailing the current extinction crisis that is engulfing our planet, warning that over 1 million species now face extinction as a result of human impacts. The plight of tigers is symptomatic of the wide reaching disaster occurring in the places they call home. Extensive land clearing to make way for palm oil has left a number of species standing at the boarder of the abyss that is extinction. Unfortunately, palm oil is rarely labelled clearly making it hard for consumers who want to do the right thing to actually do so. Check out this link to join the call for mandatory labelling of palm oil. https://www.zoo.org.au/ge/act-for-wildlife/dont-palm-us-off

14.01.2022 Could this help fix the planet?

05.01.2022 There is still time to hit the emergency brakes on the damage we are doing to our planet. There is still hope.
