20.01.2022 Christmas Hours

19.01.2022 This week is womens health week! We want to raise awareness to some of the ways that Physiotherapy can help women during and post pregnancy. 1. Exercise prescription There are many physiological changes that occur during pregnancy. It is important to understand these changes and be aware of the impact that exercise has on both the health of the baby and the mother. it is important to be aware of the contraindications to exercise and ensure that you have been cleared by you...r GP prior to commencing exercise both during and post pregnancy. We can discuss with you what is safe or unsafe to be doing depending on how far along you are. We can help modify exercise instead of completely stopping so that you can continue to feel the important benefits of exercise both physically and mentally. 2. Aches and pain during pregnancy There are specific musculoskeletal conditions that are prevalent during and post pregnancy. Some of these include pelvic girdle pain, lower back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, neck and upper back tightness. We can help to diagnose the problem and provide education and hands on treatment to help you through this period. 3. Urinary incontinence Urinary incontinence can happen at different times for different reasons. Having said this it is very prevalent in women during and post pregnancy. It can occur simply due to carrying the baby for the 9 months which puts extra stress on the pelvic floor muscles or from trauma during a vaginal birth. It greatly impacts the quality of life of many women affecting their ability to exercise and socialise greatly affecting their mental health. There are different types of incontinence such as stress, urge or both. We can help identify which one you are suffering from and provide education and pelvic floor muscle training. 4. Breast engorgement/ blocked ducts Breast engorgement is very common 24-72 hours after birth when youre milk starts to come. It is caused by a build up of blood, milk, and other fluids in the breast. it can greatly impact the ability to breastfeed and becomes very painful for the mother. If approapriate, ultrasound treatment has been shown to help reduce swelling and inflammation of the breast. Blocked ducts Blocked ducts causes a lump that is tender due to a blockage of milk. Ultrasound treatment can also help to clear blocked ducts.

03.01.2022 Real Time Ultrasound (RTUS) is a tool used by physiotherapists to look at the muscles inside your body from the outside. RTUS provides a moving image of the muscles, allowing the physiotherapist to point out which muscles should be working and whether you are activating them correctly. Most commonly, physiotherapists assess the deep abdominals (transverse abs), and pelvic floor function. The RTUS can be used as a training tool to helping you learn to activate and strengthen these muscles. If you are interested in seeing how RTUS could be part of your assessment and management of pelvic floor dysfunction or low back pain call us at Lifecare Fremantle 9335-7733
