24.01.2022 If every child had the opportunity to do this think of the health problems we would solve. The current generation of small children is facing developing a chronic disease decades before their parents for two simple reasons, being physically inactive and obesity. Sport is becoming impossible to afford for some families and security concerns mean that children simply can no longer be left to create their own fun unsupervised (roaming the neighbourhood and being home before the streetlights come on is a thing of the past). As infants, we learn to walk and climb without instruction, our only role as parents is to encourage. There is a window of opportunity when they are young to build physical skills, for the sake of future generations let them play.

20.01.2022 Gentlemen, don't wait for the right time to start, the right time is now.

19.01.2022 This is a simple test of strength, flexibility and balance where you move from standing to sitting to standing. The challenge is to sit down cross legged on the floor. You'll need bare feet and without leaning on anything lower yourself to the floor then stand up again. The maximum score is 10 and you lose 1 point if you use your hands, knees, forearms or side of your legs. Subtract 0.5 if you lose your balance.

17.01.2022 We all know exercise is essential for our good health but how does having stronger, larger muscles help us?

16.01.2022 There is a group worldwide who are defying the normal rate of age-related decline - masters athletes. People who continue to play sport into their advancing years have an advantage over their couch-dwelling peers not only by staying in peak physical condition for longer but by experiencing a gentler decline in their fitness and a shorter period of infirmity. In a time where physical inactivity and sedentary behavior have become routine the world of sport offers an opportunity to study what we are capable of achieving as we age. Whatever your game don't stop playing.

16.01.2022 With the lack of physical literacy becoming an enormous worldwide concern this is the age to shape a different future. Thanks to the British Journal of Sports Medicine for the well-designed infographic.

14.01.2022 Every day we are told by the web to forget one thing and take up another. It applies to exercise, diet and many other aspects of life. This article on mobility training adds to the ever increasing ways to exercise. Try it and you'll find it much more difficult than it looks.

13.01.2022 Brilliant idea.

11.01.2022 Preventable pathology - two words that simply, yet effectively, describe the outcome of physical inactivity. Our efforts to date in effecting societal change in attitude towards exercise have been largely unsuccessful and nowhere is it more evident than in the health of our children. In this article in ACSM, the authors connect the three concepts that span the health, sports and education fields - physical inactivity, lack of fitness / motor skill proficiency and physical illiteracy. Working together to rebuild active children/youth would benefit everyone.

11.01.2022 Have you got your ticket yet? Early bird discount registrations close 22 September 2018. We encourage those who are interested to book their spot as early as ...possible, since this date will also be the ‘go/no-go’ call for the workshop to go ahead (to ensure minimum numbers are met). Don't miss this amazing opportunity to attend one of the most world renowned stretch and flexibility authorities. Both Kit and Olivia will not be hosting workshops through all of 2019, so they may not be back in Cairns for a long while! If you have any questions, feel free to post in this event group or contact Olivia directly: https://stretchtherapy.net/contact/

11.01.2022 People are often deterred from taking up running because of its reputation for being bad for your knees, but is it? The difficulty in establishing a clearly defined yes or no is the use of human subjects, unlike collecting blood samples synovial fluid (the fluid found in joints) is harder to obtain. What is encouraging is the research results from small studies, such as this one from Brigham Young University, that running may provide a protective factor against inflammation in young healthy knees. The verdict on the same activity in the older, arthritic, injured or obese populations is still out.

09.01.2022 "Back in our day, we had none of these screens and junk food. We were all skinny and much healthier." Is that right, grandpa? Well... partly.

07.01.2022 Fight ageing with exercise and a healthy diet.

05.01.2022 As we age walking is wonderful, but a leisurely stroll isn't enough. Your walk should be fast enough to raise your heart rate leaving you breathless and unable to carry on a conversation. For most elderly walking at this rate is only possible if you have muscle strength and good balance. The natural effects of aging deplete muscle which progresses to loss of bone mass making us vulnerable to falls and fractures unless we actively work against the process. The key ingredient in building muscle is load, whether it be with weights or resistance. Starting early is preferable, but whatever age you are start now and don't stop. Take the Healthy Aging Quiz at the end of the article to see how you are traveling.

05.01.2022 The American College of Sports Medicine's survey results for 2017. How many trends do you follow?

03.01.2022 Balance is the key to fitness training as we get older. Look after your health and your heart, build muscle, work out what is best for you - the most benefit and the least risk, and make sure there is variety in your movement. Thanks to Matt Beecroft and Breaking Muscle for this article.

02.01.2022 Up, down, push, pull, four movements that explain so much of human activity. Every time we sit it is a form of squat, getting down to the floor is a lunge, push something heavy or pull yourself up. The videos show both good form and incorrect technique.
