25.01.2022 Look at this face! Tonight I meet with Buddy and his humans to work on strategies to help him cope with people in his home. We discussed management, ways to help him naturally calm and quiet himself and how giving him space and choice will actually help him to be near people. I look forward to seeing his progress.

24.01.2022 Who is ready to see the winner of our week one giveaway? Helping out with drawing this weeks winner (eventually) is Walter, what’s that they say about never working with kids and dogs? Thank you to those who entered, and Congratulations to our winner who is......................well, you are just going to have to watch the video to see if that’s you! ... There are more chances to win with our week 2 giveaway being posted shortly, so stay tuned!

24.01.2022 Lovely albeit windy consult last night with young Sam the JRT. Sam needed help with his recall as he finds the big wide world a very exciting place to be! And whilst there, I just had to snap a photo or two of his ‘brother from another mother’ - not sure if this is ‘Whipper’ or ‘Snipper’, but they both sure won my heart too.

22.01.2022 ‘Hmmm, what’s this in here? Smells good, think I’ll just help myself!’ Ever wanted to know how much you can fit in the Original trainers pouch? I can confirm it’s exactly the size of one small kitten Kitten versus The Trainer's Pouch treat bag

22.01.2022 It was a pleasure to meet these two today for a private consultation. And I love this photo of them both enjoying the LickiMat - showing that not only is enrichment for all species but dogs and cats can certainly get along and be friends!

21.01.2022 It was a case of ‘double trouble’ in today’s consult working with the adorable Mabel and Baxter this afternoon. Dealing with a ‘teenager’ who likes to bark as well as some general anxiety and very energetic breed behaviours, we have started putting into place both management and training techniques to work through.

20.01.2022 Easter activity #3 ‘Scentify your walk’ We know dogs love to sniff and there is always stuff to smell when we take them out, but this walk lets increase the scent payoff!... Before you head out on your walk, duck out alone first and pre scent different areas you will be walking past. A drop of vanilla essence at the base of a tree, a tiny drop of the water from a tin of tuna near a fence, plant 2-3 different smells at various points along the route. Then head home, get your 4 legged friend and go out for your walk like normal. If your dog passes the scent without noticing, head over to where you planted it and encourage sniffing, prove to him how clever you are to have found a new and interesting smell he passed up Obviously ensure that nothing you add on the walk will damage property or be dangerous to your dog, but have some fun with it and see what your dog thinks! I’d love to see photos or videos of your dog on their walk! So please drop them in the comments below.

18.01.2022 This morning I decided to film part of my hounds breakfast. They each got a tasting platter - I’ve spoken about these previously and how they can be used to present their meals differently, to provide different textures to their meals and of course, great for working out your dogs least favourite to favourite foods. I always find the results interesting, and my hounds never fail to surprise me with at least one item. I usually include a few items they know and a few they don’t. I also may retry items in a different manner - to give an example, I will try them with mussels again but next time I will cut them into pieces rather than give whole to see if this changes anything. Ok, individual hound tasting plates trials to be loaded into the comments shortly.

17.01.2022 Easter Activity #4 Teach your dog to hold a basket! Ensure the basket is an appropriate size and weight for your dog but teaching a 'hold' has so many fun purposes you can use it for -and of course being Easter you could get your dog to hold and carry an Easter basket.

16.01.2022 It’s been a weekend of contrasts this weekend, starting with a consultation with a Dachshund on Saturday and ending with one for a Rottweiler on Sunday.

16.01.2022 Today’s private consultation was with this little sweetheart - meet Miss Nala. Nala is starting adolescence and needed some help with a few behaviours including grooming and ignoring other dogs/exciting things on walks, as well as how to make life at home more enriching for her when her humans aren’t there.

16.01.2022 A lovely consult with these 2 sweethearts today - yep, 2 greyhounds. Buddy was only adopted a couple of weeks ago and so their humans wanted to ensure that they were doing everything they could to help to transition him to the family. I’m sure these two are going to be best buddies.

16.01.2022 New Years Eve is fast approaching and while many of us will be glad to see the back of 2020, NYE brings with it it’s own issues - namely Fireworks. So here are some hints and tips for getting through NYE safely. 1. Check your local community pages to see when and if Fireworks are scheduled. ... 2. If your pet is on medication, check you have enough today. If you are running out, fill your script tomorrow or contact your vet/vet behaviourist for a new script and have it filled. You don't want to realise that you don't have their medication when its too late to do something about it. 3. Provide your pet with a safe place that they can go if they wish. This might be their crate, a cosy bed made in a corner of a walk in robe, etc 4. Consider using the 'Through a Dogs Ear' music (available via Spotify) or the Pet Acoustics music if you have it. 5. If appropriate, set your dog up with a long lasting chew, stuffed Kong or loaded licki mat. Chewing and repetitive licking can help to soothe and calm. 6. Have someone at home with your pets if possible. Consider staying home yourself, ensuring there is a responsible and aware adult or hire a pet sitter who understands the situation. 7. Ensure all pets are wearing ID tags, just in case. 8. If you are celebrating with friends at home, make sure they all understand your dogs needs. That they know not to give your dog alcohol, to make sure that doors and windows are closed at all times and they understand how to interact with your pets (and yes, this may include not interacting with them at all!) 9. Your dog or cat may respond well to the use of ADAPTIL (dogs) or FELIWAY (cats) 10. Don't get caught up in preparing for NYE and forget about your pets needs. Go for a walk if the weather allows, play some games, or do some training, whatever you and your dog enjoy. If you have a new puppy, make fireworks a positive experience with fun games, petting and treats. Don't take them out to a fireworks display, that's going to likely overwhelm them. Instead, head inside, ensure windows are closed as well as curtains, and have fun with your puppy. Lastly, now is a good time to take a clear, up to date photo of your pet. In the off chance that your pet does get out , clear photos will make locating them much easier. Take a profile photo side on, a close up of their face and any distinguishing marks also. I want to take this time to thank all of my clients and followers, wish you all a safe and happy New Years and I look forward to seeing you all in 2021 - hopefully for a much more productive year!

16.01.2022 Puzzle Feeders. I want to start the new year with a post about puzzle feeders. Now, anyone who has worked with me or who follows this page, knows I am a fan of these but today I want to address introduction of new items and possible frustration. I often hear people say that their dog doesn’t like a particular item or that they have up and walked away without trying or even that they ‘got mad’ that it was as different one. ...Continue reading

16.01.2022 Easter activity #5 DIY Easter toy Even for a non sewer this one is easy, and honestly, your dog won’t care what is looks like in the end ... I cut 2 pieces of fleece into a large oval ‘Easter egg’ type shape. I hand sewed most of the way around the edges, leaving a gap at one end. I then turned it inside out so the seams were inside the toy and then stuffed it with whatever I had lying around. In this case, extra fleece and some squeakers, but you could use stuffing from another toy, cellophane for a crinkly sound, or even leave flat and just have squeakers. A little more sewing to close up the stuffing gap and voila, one ‘Easter egg dog toy’! Ok, so it doesn’t overly look like an Easter egg, but my dogs don’t mind and I’m sure you could do much better with an actual Ewing machine if you wanted to! Why not give it a go?! As with any toy, supervision is recommended, especially if your dog is a ‘destroyer of all things soft and fluffy’.

15.01.2022 Tasting platter 2 - and it’s Walters turn.

14.01.2022 Being the Easter weekend, Orion thought we should share some ideas on how to make Easter Egg hunts for humans, safer for the dogs in the family too. If the Easter Bunny is going to be hiding chocolate eggs for children to have an Easter egg hunt at your house (or campsite), please consider the following: *Count how many eggs are being hidden so that you know they are all accounted for.... *Write down each hiding place, or video the hide, so no chocolate is missed and left behind for dogs to find. *hold the hunt in an area the dog won’t be, for example perhaps in the front yard rather then the backyard. *consider hiding plastic eggs or pictures of eggs instead, that they can collect and that get swapped for the real thing at the end of the hunt. - Be careful of the plastic eggs if your dog is a chewer as these can also be dangerous. *storing of chocolate eggs. Remember that our dogs noses are their biggest asset, they can smell out anything! So consider storing Easter eggs in containers with lids inside the fridge or in a pantry, or cupboard. You can name each container so everyone has their eggs safely accounted for but our canine friends can’t get to them. And don’t forget - no hot cross buns for our canines either! But stay tuned, as a canine friendly recipe is coming, for an Easter treat as part of our Easter activities posts!

13.01.2022 Do you celebrate your dogs birthday? We celebrated Orion’s birthday this week, with him turning 3 years old. Each hound got an individual birthday cake and of course there were presents. What do you do for your dogs birthday?

13.01.2022 What does your New Years Eve look like? We went for a walk which included lots of sniffing and the hounds second favourite activity - picking some blueberries that have ripened early. Then we came home where the hounds had a nap followed by dinner served on lickimats and some puzzle play.

12.01.2022 Loved meeting this sweet fellow tonight! Mosco’s owner needed some assistance is working on his recall and loose lead walking skills, as well techniques to help Mosco find an alternative to jumping on people. Mosco is an ultra friendly boy, who simply adores life and I look forward to working with him and his owner!

11.01.2022 Who wants to have some Christmas countdown fun? Each day I will put up a task - it might be some enrichment, a game, a photo challenge or something else entirely. But it won’t be complicated, require experienced skill levels or take long to participate in. I’d love to see your photos or videos of your take on each day! Are you ready? ... December 1st - plant 2 new scents for your dog (outside or inside) when they aren’t there- things like a drop of vanilla essence or a rub of mint. Allow your dogs back into the area - what do they do? Do they immediately notice? Do they avoid the area, approach cautiously or eagerly explore the new smell? Make sure the scents you use are dog safe!

07.01.2022 Come and join in some Christmas countdown fun with us!

06.01.2022 I’m still here, I’m still awake and I’m still learning! Taking part in Geek Week, a 5 day online conference running 24/7 for the duration, there is so much to absorb. Having taken a brief break to get the hounds out for a walk, I’m kicking off with some ‘on demand’ presentations I haven’t yet seen (with most sessions offering 3 streams to choose from, there is so much on offer). So here to celebrating approximations with Ryan Cartlidge from Animal Training Academy

05.01.2022 Easter activity 2 Art! There are many ways you can have your dog paint you a picture. In these photos, I placed some dobs of paint on a canvas, placed the canvas inside a fairly thick ziplock bag and then spread some yogurt on the outside of the bag. ... Orion then enjoyed licking the yoghurt off, which spread the paint over the canvas. Remove the bag whilst the paint is still wet and allow to dry. Then hang on your wall. I’ve written names and ages on the back of each of my hounds art. Hint - thin paint that is fairly runny works better! A couple of other alternatives to this include getting your pet to stand on the outside of the bag or teaching them to hold a paintbrush.

05.01.2022 Who wants to take a guess at the puppy breed I had a consultation with today??

03.01.2022 Easter activity 6 Dog friendly recipe This is one of my hounds favourites - pumpkin & Parmesan treats.... 150g tapioca flour 2 large eggs 200g steamed, mashed pumpkin Large handful of grated Parmesan cheese Water as needed Silicon tray (ensure its heat proof and not an ice cube tray). Pre heat the oven to 120 degrees. In a blender mix the flour, eggs, pumpkin and Parmesan. Add water slowly to make it a pancake batter consistency. Fill the moulds with the batter, place into preheated oven and bake until cooked. Depending on your oven and the size of your moulds, this could be anything from 10-30 minutes. Turn off the oven. Shake the treats out of mould onto an oven tray and spread out. Place the tray of treats back in the oven to further dry as the oven cools. Once treats are dry and completely cool, store in a airtight container in the fridge and use within a week, or place into ziplock bags in the freezer.

03.01.2022 Ok, I can’t load the videos in the comments, so here they are, each loaded separately. First up, Orion.

03.01.2022 I met the lovely Remy today. A very sweet girl who needed some assistance with recall and a few other behaviours to help her fit in with her family better. Remy picked up the basics really quickly and was soon enjoying the new games we were teaching her.

03.01.2022 COMPETITION!! Leading up to Christmas I am going to be running some giveaways. Each Sunday I will announce this weeks giveaway, as well as the winner of the previous week! ... This weeks giveaway is inspired by another trainer who did a presentation I watched, and part of it included counting her puzzle toys/feeders - so when I was getting this weeks enrichment list ready for the hounds, I did a quick count. Excluding those already in the freezer or other places ready to be used, I counted 59! So realistically I would say there is probably somewhere around 65 - 70 in total. So that brings me to what you can win this week, and how to do so. Week 1’s giveaway is an easy one and you can win your dog a Classic LickiMat. All you have to do to go in the draw is post a picture in the comments of your dog enjoying their favourite enrichment feeding toy/game. Entry is limited to one entry per household. This weeks competition starts now, Sunday 22nd November with the winner being announced next Sunday, 29th November. So hop to it! Let’s see your dog enjoying their favourite feeding toy or game. *please note that this giveaway is not endorsed in anyway by Facebook, is a game of luck and the judges decision is final.

03.01.2022 Today’s consultation was with Memphis, the most adorable GSP puppy! Memphis needed some help finding appropriate outlets for puppy mouthing and nipping as well as some other general assistance. She won me over very quickly!

02.01.2022 I love ‘new puppy’ consults - seeing a pup early before any issues arise and instead focusing on setting them up for their best start in life is a fantastic thing for both the humans and the puppy. I was so impressed to walk into my clients house today and find a great puppy set up already happening- puppy pen with crate attached in the living area, second sleeping crate upstairs as well as a dedicated contained outdoor area with so much potential for their newest family me...mber. These three set ups mean that when their pup can’t be supervised, he remains safe in an area he can explore and play in, as well as having an area to get that much needed puppy sleep. We covered toilet training, enrichment, basic behaviours and their corresponding cues, what to do with puppy biting and so much more in today’s session and I am really looking forward to seeing him mature and grow up to be the best dog he can be! See more

02.01.2022 Headed out to meet the adorable Nala this morning for a one on one consult - Nala is just on 1 year of age and needed some help working on recall as well as calmer behaviours around the youngest member of her human family. She is a typical Rottweiler, sweet and eager to please, and once we got her nose working, she loved the new games we were teaching her.
