23.01.2022 Dumbo octopuses (Grimpoteuthis spp., also known as umbrella octopuses) are known as one of the deepest living species of octopus in the ocean, inhabiting dept...hs of up to 13,000 feet below the surface! You’ll notice this particular species (identified as Cirroteuthis by cephalopod expert Janet Voight from the @Negaunee Integrative Research Center), does not use jet propulsion like its cousins. Rather, it flies only by the power of its two headbound fins. Though the IUCN red list certifies this species as least concern, for endangerment, marine scientists are still unclear of how many exist in the wild. Dis...covered during a rescue of a monitored Sea Turtle nest and undertaken by Turtle Nesting Monitor and Take 3 supporter, Merope. Fortunately the hatchlings were alive and successfully released! *This work was undertaken under a permit (MTP 20-010) issued by The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in Florida.
