24.01.2022 Danielle Dunshea | Metropolitan Caloundra Surf Life Saving Club I’m from a small town of the south west of New South Wales, the closest city being Canberra. We were in our seventh year of drought when my husband and I decided our family were in need of a sea change.... We moved to Caloundra in 2007 and my son and a daughter signed up as nippers and were hooked pretty quickly. I looked at my kids out in the water and thought to myself I should probably experience this. I wanted to be more involved in the club so why not give it a go myself. The only problem was I was petrified of the ocean. As a kid, my parents had a beach house on the NSW coast but I was still scared of the ocean. On our property I would also sometimes swim in murky dams. So, at the age of 41 in 2017, I decided to go for my bronze medallion at Met Caloundra. It was a nerve-wracking time for me and a bit daunting knowing full well that as a lifesaver I would be putting myself in a situation where I would be relied upon and needed. It’s not because I can’t swim, it’s the anxiety of entering the ocean. But once I got my first run-swim-run and tube rescue done at our training sessions, I started to find my groove. When I was doing my course, we had some rough surf and it really challenged me. But I managed to pass and when I was handed my red and yellow uniform it was a really satisfying moment. I felt accomplished and great within myself. I now do monthly patrols with my club. I say to anyone, if a country girl like me can get her bronze medallion at 41, then anyone can! #redandyellow #locallegends

11.01.2022 Loretta Cassone | Treasurer of the Surf Club | Kirra Surf Life Saving Club I’ve devoted thousands of hours to Kirra Surf Life Saving Club but I can probably count on one hand how many times I’ve actually been in the water. I wear many hats at my club.... I’m the IRB Team Manager, I do a lot of stuff behind the scenes with nippers, I update our website, write the club newsletter, organise carnivals and raffles. There isn’t much that doesn’t pass my hands. One of my most important roles is writing all the club grants. Even though I’m not a patrolling member, I can give back by getting them a new IRB, tractor, ATVs, nipper boards, you name it. Over the past 11 years the funding from grants has been worth around $400,000, which is something I’ve very proud of. I guess I’m a big advocate for the fact that you don’t need to be a patrolling member to be able to help out at a club. You can give back in other ways." #redandyellow #locallegends

02.01.2022 #throwback 10 years on we look back at the incredible efforts of our volunteers who assisted during the 2011 floods in South East Queensland. Lifesavers worked around the clock to deploy crews to assist and evacuate residents in the hardest hit areas, showing just how transferrable their skills can be in emergency situations. It was a tough time for so many but Queensland’s spirit shone through as we all came together and helped each other out ... #redandyellow #thisislifesaving
