25.01.2022 Launched by the Play it Safe by the Water Committee as part of Water Safety Week, Life Saving Victoria has today released the 2019/20 Victorian Drowning Report at the official launch event with Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp APM. There were 34 drowning deaths in 2019/20 and while this is a 23% reduction in the drowning rate compared to the 10-year average, these figures need to be understood in the context of a season impacted by poor air quality, bushfires an...d the onset of the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This is reflected in the 40% reduction in drowning deaths between January to June 2020 compared to the 10-year average. All Victorians are urged to be extra vigilant around water this summer to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. Remember to always swim with a friend between the red and yellow flags at a patrolled beach and be prepared before a day out on or around the water by checking conditions and forecasts. 24.01.2022 Supervision is constant visual contact with your child. 20 seconds is all it takes for a child to drown, so make sure you are in a position to respond quickly by keeping children under 5 years within arms’ reach and children under 10 years always in sight. Supervision is not an occasional glance while you read or undertake household chores, and it is not looking outside at your kids playing while you are inside. Tip: Minimise any temptation to leave a child unsupervis...ed near water by having everything ready before bathing your child or going for a swim (i.e. towels, sunscreen, dry clothes, phone etc.) Read LSVs 2019/20 Drowning Report: https://bit.ly/36oSZlN #watersafetyweek2020 #PISBTW #watersafety #safersummer #childsupervision #drowningprevention

24.01.2022 When enjoying inland waterways it’s important to be aware of the risks and stay safe. The flat, still surface of an inland waterway can give a false sense of ...security. Currents, undertows or submerged objects even in seemingly tranquil waterways can prove to be very dangerous. It’s important to be aware of the dangers and always take care around water. Remember that water conditions which may have been suitable one day can change hourly with the current. 14.01.2022 Every drowning death is one too many and last year 34 Victorians tragically lost their lives after drowning. On top of this, 100 people were treated for non-fatal drowning. While the Victorian Drowning Report for 2019/20 (released yesterday at our official Water Safety Week 2020 launch), reveals the drowning toll is lower than last year and when compared to the 10-year average, there are ongoing concerns that people are not preparing enough for a day out on or around the wat...er or may be underestimating the risks. This Water Safety Week, we want to remind all Victorians of the need to play it extra safe around the water especially after a period where people have had a long break from water activities and may not be aware their fitness and swimming capabilities have decreased. For details on key findings from the report, please read our media release: https://bit.ly/3mlLrFY Read LSVs 2019/20 Drowning Report https://bit.ly/36oSZlN #watersafetyweek2020 #PISBTW #watersafety #safersummer #aquaticindustry #drowningprevention

11.01.2022 Surf Coast surfers and Surfing Victoria members Ben Roberts and Cam Lamperd have been recognised by Life Saving Victoria as Everyday Lifesavers for their efforts in rescuing two families from the surf in January. While preparing for a surf at Thirteenth Beach, Ben came across a family in trouble 150m from shore and quickly paddled out to assist them. Although he was able to rescue two children, tragically, their father, who had gone into the water after them without a flotati...on device, was pulled from the water by lifesavers and unable to be revived. The following day at the same beach, Ben and his friend Cam again came across a family struggling in the surf and rushed out to bring in a brother and sister safely to shore on their boards, while another surfer paddling past the family assisted their father. Thankfully, all three swimmers were unharmed but exhausted. Thank you Ben and Cam for using your surf skills, local knowledge and boards to assist these two families and congratulations on receiving the Everyday Lifesaver award If you see someone in trouble and you don’t have the surf skills or a flotation device that can be used to assist in a rescue, phone 000 immediately and alert local lifesavers if they are present. #everydaylifesaveraward #everydaylifesavers
