20.01.2022 Almost on a daily basis I see emails with requests for a vacancy in a group home. I am truly saddened as there appears to be an assumption that by placing a person in a group home with 24x7 support will automatically meet their needs. This is so far from the truth and often only serves to meet the needs of a service rather than the person with disability. ... Recently I have been involved in conversations with families where this issue has been discussed. Within the current service system, families are still being pressured into taking a vacancy. Often support in a 1:1 environment does not work out more expensive than the support within a SIL arrangement within a group. Take time to consider what it will take to meet the needs of your family member and stick to what you truly believe is required. 14.01.2022 I have been reflecting on why it is so difficult for many people with disability to have a home of their own. Why should people with disability be denied the right to have a home of their own? Just because someone with disability requires 24x7 support this should not automatically exclude them from having a home of their own. ... A home is a sanctuary where we feel safe and secure, where we feel free to be ourselves and where we have a say about who we might share our home with. It should not be a place where it is considered a workplace first or a facility where people with disability are cared for. My home and my belongings matter to me. Cheers Josey

02.01.2022 What to look for with your Support Services Under self-direction, people with a disability and their families need to be clear about the support they need for themselves and their family member in order to create a valued life. I have seen cases where supports can very easily go off track.... This results in the overall vision being compromised and sometimes untended consequences, which are not in the best interest of the person that is to be helped. Individuals are so reliant on the support they receive that they may do whatever the worker suggests believing that the worker knows best. It is very easy to compromise for the sake of keeping the peace and not speak up when there is an inkling that support might be going off track. There may well be a very good reason to provide support in a particular space for a particular reason, however, once the reason for going to a particular space has changed, be prepared to review how and where the support is best offered to reach the individual’s goals. Under self-direction, the person and/or their family member has the absolute authority of how, when, where and with whom the support should be offered not the worker. If you are finding that you are not achieving the life assistance outcomes that you want, please contact Josey McMahon at LIFESTEPS AUSTRALIA and we can have a talk about your concerns, and how to achieve a better outcome for you and your family.
