21.01.2022 A question I borrowed: If you were spirited away to the location of the book you are currently reading, where and when would you be? Me - I'd be on Wiradjuri land in present time. (not far from home at all).

21.01.2022 For your Diary, 3rd December - I will be 'In Conversation' with sister-writers Kate Forsyth and Belinda Murrell who have written a book together about their great-great-great-great grandmother, Charlotte, who wrote the first published children's book in Australia: https://www.betterreadevents.com//kate-forsyth-belinda-mur

12.01.2022 Memoir writing workshop at Faber in 2021, the 4 month course - hopefully the first live class since March this year. I know people say, 'fills quickly', but all my workshops for this year are already full, so do put your name down if you are keen for Feb 2021. Just expressions of interest at the moment - you will be told in November if it is live or zoom and you can decide then. Feel free to share if you know others who are serious about their memoir writing. http://faberwritingacademy.com.au/Writing-True-Stories-2021

10.01.2022 Because I wasn't able to do the Paris Memoir workshop this year - no explanations necessary - I have been looking nostalgically through the photos. Here is the Paris group from the first year 2005 - when Vicky Cole and I ran around like mad things trying to hold it all together. (I am the young thing in the purple skirt...) , I will try to find a picture from each year.

09.01.2022 Books! All arrived in the post today: The Ways of The Bushwalker, by Melissa Harper, a history of bushwalking in Aust - I wrote a back cover quote for it. A Sense of Paris, by Marcelle Holliday, a visit to Paris - Marcelle did the Varuna class recently. China Blonde by Nicole Webb - a memoir about her years living and working in China - Nicole did an AWC class with me. The Gifts of Reading, collected by Jennie Orchard , a collection of essays by a range of fabulous authors including a fave of mine, Robert MacFarlane - this one just an unexpected prezzie - thank you!

07.01.2022 For writers and readers: 'In Conversation' with Betty O'Neill last night about her wonderful memoir/biography/history, 'The Other Side of Absence'. I feel a kind of mid-wifely pride - I didn't do any of the hard work, but I was there when it was born.

05.01.2022 A superb personal essay from John Birmingham - I'm sharing this because it's just such a great piece of writing - an inspiration for anyone who wants to bring together the personal and the political ( or any kind of idea). So many good phrases and lines - my personal favourite: 'if there is subtext to this year of lethal wonders, it cautions against narrative complacency.' https://www.theguardian.com//burning-bush-melting-arctic-a

03.01.2022 A new word: sehnsucht (German) - a yearning or wistful longing for the unknown and the mysterious. From Robert MacFarlane's chapter in 'The Gifts of Reading'. I suspect sehnsucht has shaped my life.

This is a wonderful book - read it and be awestruck by her courage and joie de vivre.
