01.01.2022 How to Have Spring Onions All Year Round This is such a cheeky little gardening trick, I love it! When I cook, I normally replace onions with spring onions because the taste is similar and I have an endless supply in the garden. ... But how I hear you ask? When you buy spring onions from the supermarket they come with the root system intact. Normally picked only 24 hours previous to landing on the shelf, the root system is still alive. Simply cut the spring onion shoot about 5cms from where the root system starts leaving the roots in tact. Stick your finger in the soil, and pop the spring onion, roots first of course, into the soil and cover it up. There should be about 3cms of spring onion sticking above the soil. As per planting anything, water it straight away and daily over the first week allowing the root zone to re-establish. Replanting any plant will place it in shock for a while as it tries to reestablish its root zone where nutrients and gases exchange. Will it keep growing? Yep, sure will. Within a couple of weeks your spring onion will be another few centimetres taller. They normally have 3 -5 shoots on them. When you want fresh spring onion, just cut off individual shoots leaving the root system on the soil. How long can you keep harvesting the same plant? I’ve got spring onion plants that are 3 years old now. They survive the winter, and I keep harvesting them and they keep growing back. Happy cheeky planting. See more
