23.01.2022 The Parasympathetic Nervous System = Stress Management System. The opposite of the 'fight/flight' nervous system, is the 'rest and digest' nervous system. This important part of the Autonomic nervous system is extremely essential for bringing balance to all the body's systems as well as helping to boost the 'happy' hormones within the brain. Learning ways of promoting this 'rest and revive' system is most advantageous.
20.01.2022 The first three Lifestyles for Mind Brain Health are involved with the Psychological and Social aspects of life. 'Mind in Focus' - utilizes Mindfulness as a tool for positive change and helps manage our mental health. 'Engage' - in the Play and Learning environment. our brain needs to be challenged. 'Connect' - good relationship skills. We must have connections to others, either in the community, or with family, friends and partners.... These three approaches are particularly aimed at our psychological wellbeing. As previously mentioned, the brain’s structure and function is impacted by our thoughts and feelings as well as behaviours . How we manage our thoughts feelings and behaviours is best assisted by the tool of mindfulness (awareness in the present moment of internal and external happenings, without judgement and with a sense of curiosity and kindness). There are three psychological areas that mindful awareness is most beneficial. * Reduction of stress related conditions that may trigger anxiety and depression * Development of compassion for self and others. * Increasing gratitude, joy and ease. Engage - learn and play. Our Brain needs to be challenged by learning new things. The more slightly difficult the lesson.... the better. Think of learning a new language learning to dance (especially the Tango) any new skill that is a challenge is helpful at increasing our brain volume. Connect. - Humans are social 'animals' and our need to be in a couple, family, group, community etc is extremely important. Having the ability to socialise and connect keeps us all healthy and especially our close and intimate relationships.
20.01.2022 ‘SURVIVAL’ BRAIN and the Automatic NERVOUS SYSTEM 'Survival' brain developed from ancient times - is always on the look out for danger It has a natural 'negativity bias' to help keep us alive. It’s where we have our psychological conditioning from early years to ‘be careful watch out! (our identity, rules and beliefs)... This part of us gives more importance to what can go wrong . will go wrong! Continual rumination and worry leading to depression, anxiety and neurological illnesses (Dementia) It's scattered energy and multi-tasking is not helpful. It's always focused on past or future and always has judgements, rules, defences, rumination and worry. In Neurology terminology, this type of mode is called the ‘Default Mode Network’ as opposed to the ‘Task Focused Network’ In other Philosophies it is called the ‘ego, small-self or lower mind’ Here is a short animation to help explain https://youtu.be/kv6HkipQcfA
17.01.2022 Here is another interesting info-graphic explaining the importance of lifestyle factors on brain health, especially Neuroplasticity/ BDNF.
17.01.2022 The 'Survival' Mode Brain and the Sympathetic Nervous System. (see post below)
15.01.2022 BDNF is an important protein that is very beneficial to health especially brain and mind health. Note the Lifestyles that promote it... Cheers
08.01.2022 Mind changes Brain ... changes Mind. So, we know the brain orchestrates the functions of the body but did you know, that the body and mind also impact the brain ? The activity in your brain changes every second based on what your body is doing, and what your mind is thinking and imagining. This process is called Biofeedback. It was once considered that deficiencies in our brain chemistry was the cause of our negative thoughts low moods and behaviour, and that this required a...dditional supplementation via medication (of these brain chemicals) was the only way to treat conditions such as depression and anxiety The good news today is that research shows that actually, how we intentionally think, feel and act, can also change our brain chemistry, for the better. You can alter your brain’s function with conscious feedback simply by paying attention, (mindfulness) Whatever you choose to focus on, has a reaction in your brain, strengthening the connections and rewiring for better or for worse called Brain Plasticity. This fact was discovered when helping people to recover from brain injury. They ability for the brain to be moulded and changed in order to recover the brain’s function and chemistry - was termed Neuroplasticity Our brain is incredibly adaptable and flexible and has the ability to grow develop and change throughout our entire life. We are the agents of change in our life.
06.01.2022 NEUROGENISIS- is a relatively new discovery (1998) by scientists that has revolutionised brain health and cognitive repair. Scientists discovered that the brain can and does regenerate new neurons from specialised stem cells in the brain. Post mortems on elderly folk showed that these new brain-cells were present right up until they died. These older folk were cognitively well. Unfortunately post mortems on folk with Alzheimer’s showed a lack of these new cell formation.... Take away to reach your smartest, happiest, and healthiest, you need to maximise your neuron yield. NEUROPLASTICITY - is also reasonably new discovery and demonstrates how ‘plastic’ and malleable the brain really is. Synaptic endings of the nerve is where the ‘message’ for function is delivered. New synapsis can be created by intentional and repetitive behaviour, movement and thought. This application is a godsend for recovery from brain injury such as stroke. It is also a godsend for mood disorders and mental wellbeing. REWIRE NEW HABITS - intentionally and permanently re-wiring our neurons for wellness and happiness. Avoiding chronic physical illness, plus neurological and mental illnesses
