16.01.2022 Monday's snippet. Great quote from "Of Work Time and Leisure (book written in 1962 by Sebastian de Grazia. "The man who works loses his time. Consumption eats money, money costs work, work loses time." So where does the slippery concept of Leisure fit? For me leisure is not what I do, rather how I am in everything I do. What about you?
14.01.2022 Welcome 2020! Had a fabulous break and the sleeves get rolled up again, well maybe after Saturday's abalone fishing! So lucky to combine my paid work with a host of recreation activities where paid work is integrated within a leisure ethic. p.s. Thanks legs for listening to my brain (yes that's me being very elegant!)
12.01.2022 Ageing workforce - big deal, so what, who cares? Today, many older adults are working until much later in life. Unlike the old model where you retired at 65 and you weren't expected to live much longer. Many work later into older age from choice - for the intrinsic benefits of paid work and many because of real or perceived financial necessity. Others stay at work through a lack of understanding of serious leisure. So will the future be the same - work until you are in your 7...0's to 80's and then die within 5-10 years? And what of the leisured life? What do people want? What do HR professionals want in planning and mitigating the impacts of an ageing workforce? What do operational managers want? CEO's or shareholders? What do older adults want in their act of life? Everyone is different, however a psychological need we all have is for some "certainty". What does certainty look like for workforce planning and an ageing workforce. Where is certainty in productivity, safety and profit as the grey matter leaves the building? What does certainty look like for the older adult as she or he contemplates, negotiates and implements a life without paid full time work. What do you want?
10.01.2022 I want to start a long and slow conversation about leisure - not something you "do" or "consume" or equate to time. I'd like to see a world where we didn't get sucked into consuming as much, where leisure was an intrinsic feature in our lives - not relegated to second, third or fourth best by the consumertising work ethic. Summed up in this way by the Spanish proverb "el hombre que trabaja pierde su tiempo". Translates to "The man who works loses his time. Consumption eats money, money costs work, work loses time". This quote appeared in a book written in 1962 - Of Time, Work and Leisure by Sebastian de Grazia. This book was written 57 years ago and it rings so true for today. Your thoughts?
