19.01.2022 Check out Bakers recent report, "The dark heart of diabetes." People with type 2 diabetes are unusually prone to dying from heart failure or sudden cardiac death. The likelihood of death from heart failure is elevated to the same level as from myocardial infarction, and sudden cardiac death is twice as common in those with type 2 diabetes as in those without the condition. However, death from CVD is not inevitable in people with type 2 diabetes. This report outlines the multifactorial interventions that can significantly reduce cardiovascular risk and improve survival in those with established CVD. https://www.baker.edu.au/impact/advocacy/dark-heart-diabetes

02.01.2022 Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute are currently examining whether interrupting prolonged sitting during pregnancy can improve blood sugar levels in individuals at risk of gestational diabetes mellitus. Recent experimental evidence suggests that regular (every 2030 minutes), brief (23 minutes) bouts of gentle walking can lower post meal blood sugar levels up to 35%t when compared to prolonged sitting. Given that prolonged sitting is associated with elevated blood sugar levels, there is value in examining the effect of breaking up sitting in the context of routine screening for gestational diabetes mellitus.
