20.01.2022 In this weather, it's good put up some shade and use ice blocks in your #worm farms. Leave a bit of a gap wherever you can to let hot air escape and the drain tap open to allow some air flow. Just before #Summer. I let the number of trays build up so that there is an extra one. This gives the worms more space to move around to find their favourite spot as well as adding a bit of mass to reduce extreme temperature changes. #wormfarm #vermicomposting... #gardening #growyourfood #gardenblogger #urbanfarming #frontyardfarming #summergardening @ Gawler, South Australia

20.01.2022 Introducing Jelina Jelina hails from the provincial Philippines and brings her love of traditional living and food to our home here in Gawler. With a smile that can light up a room, Jelina brightens our pages with images of her harvesting in the garden. ... Jelina is an internationally known textile artist, having made her name with unique felt creations. She's also a traditional weaver who works closely with Ngarrindjeri Elders to promote and teach traditional weaving. Jelina works on this closely with Aunty Ellen Trevorrow who is both her mentor and her best friend. If that wasn't enough, Jelina also has two Master's degrees and is just in the final throes of completing her PhD thesis. Jelina and Marlon are both amazing cooks, Jelina bringing her traditional cooking knowledge to our table while Marlon brings a more contemporary, experimental touch. #urbanfarming #growyourown #Philippines #pinay #phd #academiclife #traditionalweaving #ngarrindjeri #cooking #gardenblogger

16.01.2022 Yesterday, I was given free reign in a garden that was full of #Dandelions. Even though they were mostly in between pavers so that I couldn't get the roots, I managed to get just under 2Kg of leaves, flowers and stems. I've cleaned and roughly chopped them and they're in mesh hanging dryers, along the path where a cool breeze is blowing. These dryers are a great energy saver.... Interestingly, if you step outside of the garden, there is no cool breeze at the moment and it's quite a warm, sunny day That's part of our garden design - it creates some of its own weather, even though it is a small area. Good planning and design can help improve our lives in the face of #climatechange If you'd like to find more about how we have designed Ligaya Garden for the heat, check out our page here - https://ligayagarden.online/summer/cooling-with-our-garden/ #summergardening #summerheat #herbs #hotweathergardening #herbalremedies #foraging #urbanfarming #energyefficiency

15.01.2022 Here's a link to our new blog post. It's about a talk that Jelina and I did at a lunch for Anglicare staff yesterday at our favourite cafe @poeticjusticegawler. http://ligayagarden.online/2020/11/12/a-little-talking/ That should take you there ... #workshops #bushfoods #bushmedicine #weaving #research #phd #ngarrindjeri #traditionalweaving

12.01.2022 Jelina and I had a great day yesterday at Poetic Justice Cafe, which is one of our favourite local haunts. Jelina wowing them (I'm in the reflection, being the guy with the camera for the talk). We were speaking at a lunch for staff of Northern Foster Care Services, part of Anglicare. This team focuses on Indigenous and culturally diverse children in the foster care system and deserved to cut loose with a bit of a lunch.... http://ligayagarden.online/2020/11/12/a-little-talking/

11.01.2022 Finding Strawberries at our place is a race between ground people and flying people. It's a multifaceted struggle between humans and birds and #bugs and humans and bugs and #birds. 10.01.2022 Willow Water is a natural, easy to make, home made, rooting hormone for your cuttings. I recently wrote a blog post about its benefits, how it works and of course, how to make it. 05.01.2022 It's a tad hot here today 43C so far and it's still only morning. Athena, however revels in the Sun. I suppose that makes it appropriate that she in named after the sister of Apollo Anyways, make sure you're critters are shaded, fed and well watered, that your #chooks have a place to dig down into the cool soil. Chooks will only drink cool water and stop drinking when it gets warm. We've dropped a chunk of ice into their waterer.... 05.01.2022 Not all predators are bad. Some, like this little Mantis are a huge benefit to our #garden and our food supply in general. I snapped these shots while #weeding at Dad's place. It's a tiny little thing, the white shapes in the picture are seeds of a wild grass, so the little guy was leass than a centimetre long but full of fight. I wish I could have caught its #hunting skills on video but only had my phone and shaky hands Natural #pestcontrol at its best!... #gardening #insects #prayingmantis #gardenpredators #permaculture #homefarming #frontyardfarming
