Multiple sources of light were present including the Milky Way, a setting full moon, some shooting stars and the glow of distant Kiama. 12.01.2022 Choeung Ek, Cambodia: One of the most sobering sites I have visited. It is the site of a former orchard and mass grave of victims of the Khmer Rouge. One of "The Killing Fields", where the regime executed over one million people in the mid to late 70s. Many of those executed here were former political prisoners who were kept by the Khmer Rouge in the Tuol Sleng (S-21) detention center in Phnom Penh. Choeung Ek is now a memorial, marked by a Buddhist stupa which is filled with more than 5,000 human skulls, many of which bear witness to the violence that resulted in their death.
