24.01.2022 Aaagghhh, soooo scrumptious!! This gorgeous little bubba popped in for his check up and immunisations today with our baby-whispering nurse, Robyn. We know giving your child vaccines can be a bit (or a lot) nerve racking and we are always always always happy to take the time to answer your questions so you feel comfortable and in control.

24.01.2022 Well. What a year, and 2020 still just keeps on giving! On the up side, we really are so grateful for everyone who has helped us, and for the skills we have gained along the way...including keeping the indoor plants alive. Our lovely fig tree next to the front door was given to Dr. Caroline by her dad when she was 17 (so, you know, 5ish years ago ) We are relieved it survived the 9 weeks since we've been open! And....we now know what "white oil" is too! Here’s to everyone finding their own ways to grow and branch out in positive directions for 2021

24.01.2022 We are all appreciating the freedom that Queenslanders have in these crazy times, especially when you compare us to the rest of the world. We REALLY want to keep it this way so PLEASE get a Covid test even if you have the mildest symptoms. Results are usually back in 12-24 hours these days - so easy! These are some scenarios and how you can go about getting a test done: - If you feel like you have minor cold symptoms and don’t want or need to come in for a face to face appoi...ntment, we can do a telehealth appointment (ie by phone) with you and then just email you a pathology form (please note that you need to have seen us for a consultation in person at Lighthouse to be eligible for a medicare rebate for telehealth). You then take this pathology form to QML (closest is the drive through at Murrarie) or Sullivan and Nicholaides (Wynnum or Capalaba) and they will do the swab for you. The results are sent to you via SMS. - You feel a bit worse and want to see a doctor in person to be examined. You can make an appointment to be seen in person but we ask you to tell us ahead of time that you have symptoms present. We also ask that you wear a mask if possible, we will wear a mask and we might even come out to see you in the carpark rather than getting you to come inside (we’ll let you know what to do when you make your appointment). We know the risk of flu symptoms being Covid right now is very low, but because if any of us get a cold we have to isolate, be swabbed, and can’t work while unwell, we are continuing to be cautious about it. In this circumstance, we will then treat anything that needs treating as well as give you a form to go and get a swab done for Covid. As above, you’ll receive your results by SMS and usually within 12-24 hours. - Rarely, if you have been in contact with a known case of Covid or for another reason we really feel your risk is higher than normal, we will recommend that you attend the Respiratory Clinic at Alex Hills to be assessed and swabbed. You can make an appointment for this clinic here: https://www.hotdoc.com.au//alexandra-hills-respira/doctors Thank you for doing the right thing. We know it is annoying and frustrating...but...2020

24.01.2022 This is long, but it's great. In this post, Rebecca Sparrow makes a really really good point - that even though 2021 is starting to look like a repeat of 2020 with cancelled holidays, suddenly changed plans and border closures, we actually NEVER know how a year is going to turn out. "Every year we can make plans but that's about it. Like every other year we've lived through -- 2021 is going to shuffle her deck and deal us some cards and all we can control is how we respond to the hand we're dealt. How we show up." There's also some really practical advice and links about how you can actually do this. Worth a read!

24.01.2022 Let there be art!! A little while ago, one of our kids was talking about an artist she really loved. It turns out that just by coincidence, the artist lives right here in Wynnum! So we contacted her and the lovely De Gillett Cox BFA is now displaying some of her amazing paintings in our waiting room. They are all for sale (by De, not us!), so if you love one enormously you actually can take it home - but in the meantime we just get to enjoy having them around. Lucky lucky lucky us!!

23.01.2022 We have just set up our new SMS service for reminders and results. We’ve tested it on ourselves and it seems to be working brilliantly, but being super tech savy isn’t our number one quality. So...if you get sent a message about your test results or a reminder that seems ahh, not quite right, please ring us and we’ll clarify it for you!

21.01.2022 Oh dear. Elfie was doing a bit of yard work on the weekend and ended up with a splinter of metal in his eye! Not to worry though. We numbed the eye with some anaesthetic, gave it a good check over and removed that annoying splinter. Easy peasy. Ever practical, Dr. Claire then had a chat to Mr. Potato Head and found him some safety glasses to wear in future. (Also, for those wondering, we promise the elf posts won’t last forever).

20.01.2022 Merry Christmas! In a year of unexpected changes, we are so happy to have built a place full of so many positive vibes. We popped the champagne after our last patient left today (we promise) to celebrate all the ups and downs. We will be closed over the public holidays but will be open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings next week then will be back to normal from Monday Jan 4th. Sending everyone happy and healthy thoughts and thanks a million for your support!!

20.01.2022 Happy Monday! What a glorious place to live and work! We still have a couple of appointments free today if anyone needs anything. Phone 35184178 or book online at www.lighthousegp.com.au

19.01.2022 This NAIDOC week, we acknowledge the Quandamooka people, on whose land we live and work. We, a whole bunch of white people who have come from other places, feel so fortunate to live in such a beautiful environment and we pay our respects to a community of people who have maintained their unbroken connection to this land for more than 25,000 years. Thank you to Rachael Sarra Creative for the image!

17.01.2022 Thanks so much to the always helpful and fabulous team at the local Talbot Press for our new hanging sign! Hopefully this makes finding us on Bay Terrace just a little bit easier. FYI - Talbot have done our window coverings, our flyers, our business cards, our welcome sign behind the desk, our A-frame sign and now this! Highly recommended!

16.01.2022 Hot exciting tip for 2021! Do you sometimes forget whether you have taken your regular medication or not, and then um and ah for ages about whether or not to take it again just in case?? Don’t worry, it’s a common problem and you’re not losing your mind! Here’s the solution - when you get a new pack of medication, write the date on the back of the blister pack. That way it is easy to tell if you’ve taken it or not. Happy and safe days ahead

15.01.2022 Oops! Elfy’s rosy cheeks aren’t just because he’s full of jolly cheekiness! It’s sunburn! Luckily he knew we do skin checks so he came in for a good check over. With a lifetime of facial sun exposure, it’s not surprising that there were a few suss spots that we needed to biopsy, but nothing too serious. Remember, no matter what shade of skin you have, at the very least make sure you consciously look at your skin all over about once a month (do it when you’re nude and waiting for the shower to heat up ). If you notice any spots that are new or changing, come in and tell us about it!

14.01.2022 Fellas this one’s for you. Because lady doctors aren’t just for ladies. We love seeing men being proactive about managing their own health, and the statistics about how infrequently this happens are pretty dire. So, we’re getting into the Movember spirit and are passing on their advice to the men in our lives (and yours) to do these five things for themselves: 1. Spend time with people who make you feel good. Good mates are critical. 2. Talk, more, to other peop...le (including us!) and listen to your mates. 3. Know your numbers. Talk to your doctor about screening tests for prostate cancer, heart disease, bowel cancer and lots more fun things. If you don’t know about it you can’t stop it happening. 4. Know thy nuts. Well. Check them a lot and tell someone if they aren’t quite right. 5. Move, more. Find something you enjoy doing start doing it regularly. You might just find it changes your life. Check out www.movember.com.au to find out more about these tips and then make yourself an appointment. www.lighthousegp.com.au See more

14.01.2022 Qml collection centre for blood tests now open at Lighthouse! 8am-1pm Monday-Friday, corner of Bay Terrace and Pine Street, Wynnum.

14.01.2022 This is so awesome. Dinesh was a medical student when he was involved in a car accident on the Gateway Motorway and subsequently ended up with a spinal injury. Despite it all he is now a practising doctor and advocate for others with spinal injuries. Such an impressive story of adversity developing into opportunity and success!

11.01.2022 Parkrun is back from Covid hibernation next Saturday morning! If you have been wanting to do something social, fun and active, Parkrun is a great option. It is a timed 5km walk or run (you can definitely just walk!!) that is all run by volunteers and kids are welcome (no scooters/bikes but prams ok). It is a global organisation and we are lucky to have TWO here in the Bayside at Wynnum and Lota. Hope to see you there!

09.01.2022 Little Elfy’s just left, but not before she gave us a big thumbs up after having her Implanon put in. We agree buddy, long acting contraceptives like these and IUD’s are ace! (They don’t suit everyone obviously, but are great for many people and many elves).

07.01.2022 There’s heaps of gastro around at the moment . The best way to avoid it is by being super vigilent about handwashing (lucky 2020 got us in training for this ). You should also stay at home for 48 hours after the symptoms stop to avoid spreading it around further. If affected, make sure you keep having lots of fluids - water is best but oral rehydration solutions like Gastrolyte (also come in ice block form) are great if you have them. We get particularly worried about babi...es under 12 months getting dehydrated, so keep offering them small amounts of breastmilk or formula much more frequently and keep an eye on how wet their nappies are as well. If in any doubt at all, give us a call! Most gastro resolves itself in time (unusual to last longer than 5-7 days) but occasionally we treat it with medications so always get checked if worried! 06.01.2022 On Thursday this week it was International Day of People with Disability and this article really resonated as a reminder to see the person in there behind the disability. Sometimes communication or behaviour problems are so prominent that it makes it hard to see the personality and qualities of the person shining through, but it is up to us to always remember to do so. This article features poetry by Oliver Mills, who has Cerebral Palsy . This condition affects him by impai...ring his muscle movement and verbal communication, but Mr Mills says it "doesn't mean I can't think or communicate in other ways or have hopes and dreams". Mr Mills said people often thought he could not see or hear them talking about him. "I understand everything people say," he said. "People ignore me, children stare." "I want people to see me, talk to me and hear me." Thank you for the reminder, Oliver, and for sharing your poetry. Oi - News Flash! A poem by Oliver Mills People think I can't walk, can't talk, can't dance, can't write, can't paint, can't create. People think I can't communicate. They think I can't see them, or hear them talking about me. People ignore me. Children stare. I can't stand being talked down to. I understand everything you say. See me, talk to me, hear me. https://www.abc.net.au//international-day-of-peop/12942446

04.01.2022 FYI - the latest Medicare budget announcements included funding for additional psychology services for anyone with a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). A MHCP is a written plan about how to get on top of things and often includes a referral to a psychologist. Having a MHCP makes seeing a psychologist much more affordable. Previously, you were entitled to up 10 of these psychology visits per year, but this has now been increased to 20. If you have previously used all of your allo...cated sessions and are needing to continue seeing your psychologist this year, we can do you up another referral so that you can access another 10. If you are making an appointment to see us for a MHCP referral, we very much appreciate you booking a long (30 minute) appointment so we have enough time to cover everything properly. Any questions? Don't ever be afraid to ask! See more

02.01.2022 Sneaky littly Elfy snuck in on an iron infusion at lunchtime today Like many people, the fatigue just crept up on her so she’d just thought it was normal to feel so tired and lightheaded all the time. Not so Elfy! Not normal at all! Hopefully the liquid black gold works its magic on her energy levels super fast. We do HEAPS of iron infusions at Lighthouse. It’s a very low risk and easy procedure which helps loads of people (and elves) feel better quicker!

01.01.2022 Honestly. You spend half your life trying NOT to have a baby, what can feel like half your life trying TO have a baby, and thenBAM! Throw in menopause!! We have all sorts of tricks up our sleeves to help you through all these wonderful life stages. For those wanting more longer acting options for contraception and control, we all insert and remove Implanons and Dr. Christine Humphreys also inserts IUDs (yep, we know, so awesome).
