25.01.2022 CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY is increasingly being embraced by many organisations. From volunteering to sponsorship, it's taken on many forms and guises. Unfortunately, while noble and well intended, without a full appreciation of the social situation, most efforts can be misguided, inefficient and often counter-productive.... Businesses, already facing increasing complexity, are stretching their internal capabilities to the limit trying to 'solve' social problems. In this sense, enthusiasm and commitment doesn't equal real capability. Moreover, businesses may also be creating situations that social scientist David Peter Stroh calls the 'Accidental Adversary' where supporting social problem 'A' over here may be subverting the success of social problem 'B' over there. The effective deployment of CSR initiatives requires strategic focus. It requires a systemic understanding of underlying root causes, drivers and influencers within a social system. Looking to social projects that sit within an organisation's own value chain is a great start. An evidence backed strategy supported by existing competencies enables focus and efficiency, leading to more impactful and positive outcomes for all. We support organisations to make the strategic, smart and sustainable step towards embracing corporate social responsibilities at scale.
